3 The Sacred Heart College Strategic Plan builds on the Strategic Plan of and aims to further enhance all aspects of the underpinning Marist ethos of our College. The School Council has endorsed a Plan that will continue to refine and improve the educational and pastoral program in the context of the Marist vision, to ensure the best provision of Catholic Education at Sacred Heart College will mark 120 years since the founding of the College in 1897 in Port Adelaide. Sacred Heart enjoys an enviable reputation, strong enrolment, and outstanding success in academic, sporting and cultural pursuits and is highly regarded for its numerous social justice initiatives. The Strategic Plan is designed to equip the students of Sacred Heart College with the skills and values to become life-long learners who will take their place in, and contribute meaningfully to, their local and global community. Our Plan seeks to: Build on the strengths of the past to inform the present and create new futures that will enable students to experience success and growth; Promote excellence in Catholic and Marist education; Achieve quality teaching and learning in all aspects of school life; Actively seek the support and contributions of students, parents and staff in the life of the school; Develop and continuously review systems and processes to encourage accountability for all members of the school community. The Strategic Plan ( ) will be implemented by action plans developed by the School Executive, with annual reporting to the School Council. The Strategic Plan ( ) supports the development of Sacred Heart College, in alignment with contemporary educational practice and priorities within the Marist Order. 4 Context Sacred Heart College has established a tradition of excellence in education since its foundation in This has been achieved through: The rich heritage of the Marist Brothers, whose commitment to education and the welfare of young people spans all states in Australia and 78 countries throughout the world; High standards in student-centred education, which focuses on the development of the whole person and draws together the formative role played by teachers and parents in the education process; A commitment to values and faith education; A balanced educational program that cultivates the academic, spiritual, physical, cultural and social development of each student; Quality facilities and resources that maintain, develop and evaluate the educational program. Responsiveness to changing circumstances; for example, relocations in the early years (1897, 1902, 1905), establishment at Paringa Hall in 1914, the World War Eras, The South West Region restructure (1977), co-educational boarding (1999); the 2015 amalgamation of the Middle and Senior Schools to reform Sacred Heart College and openness to dialogue in responding to the needs of the immediate and medium term future. Our Vision Sacred Heart College has been formed by the Marist charism of trust in God and devotion to Mary. In the tradition of Marcellin Champagnat, the College promotes a love of learning and the personal growth of each individual within a cooperative and supportive community of faith. In a spirit of hope and audacity, each member of our community is challenged to grow and learn in order to be agents of change for a better world. Our VIsion seeks to: Develop the whole person, ensuring all human values find unity and fulfilment in the life of the College; Help students work towards an integration of faith and culture in day to day living; Provide equal access to appropriate curricula that recognise spiritual, academic, physical and emotional differences; Deliver age and ability appropriate teaching and learning programs, which are both challenging and inclusive and aimed at achieving personal, academic excellence; Utilise the visual and performing arts as integral features of our religious and secular learning; Nurture the social development of students through careful emphasis on polite manners, suitable dress and appropriate behaviour in a variety of settings; Provide opportunities for students to develop a high level of personal fitness and recreational interests, and care for their health and general wellbeing; Provide a holistic, Christian teaching and learning program which nurtures a broad world view and encourages local and global engagement. This vision will only be achieved through a collaborative partnership involving staff, students, parents and old scholars, and all who contribute to the positive formation of young people for the future. This vision is further defined by six specific aspects or dimensions of Sacred Heart College.

5 Six Dimensions FAITH FORMATION & MARIST MISSION Goal 1: To develop a relevant and living Catholic ethos in the Marist tradition as central to the culture of Sacred Heart College. TEACHING & LEARNING Goal 2: To promote excellence in teaching and learning and student achievement through a challenging and inclusive curriculum which presents multiple pathways reflective of students aspirations. PASTORAL CARE and WELL-BEING Goal 3: To provide a quality program of pastoral care based on personal responsibility and high expectations, developing resilience, ensuring security and acknowledging the intrinsic relationship between wellbeing, pastoral care and student learning. COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION Goal 4: To develop and promote a strong sense of community to enhance the educational program at both a local, national and global level, especially across the Marist Community. RESOURCE & ENVIRONMENT Goal 5: To provide quality facilities and respond strategically to future resource provision and environmental management so as to provide an accessible, high quality learning environment for the families of our region. BOARDING COMMUNITY Goal 6: To ensure that the Boarding Community is alive with family spirit and with high expectations and is a safe and inclusive community for boarders and their families.

6 Faith Formation and Marist Mission 1 GOAL 1: To develop a relevant and living Catholic ethos in the Marist tradition as central to the culture of Sacred Heart College Strive to make Jesus Christ known and loved, in the way of Mary, and bring hope to the students of Sacred Heart College. Provide and bear witness to an experience of Church community that is Marian, Eucharistic, faith focused, mission driven and inclusive. Promote engagement by members of the Sacred Heart Community with the Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat. Aim to be a College characterised by a collaborative, inclusive and authentic leadership style. Ensure the inspirational leadership of Pope Francis resonates across the College community.

7 Teaching and Learning GOAL 2: To promote excellence in teaching and learning and student achievement through a challenging and inclusive curriculum which presents multiple pathways reflective of students aspirations Integrate the many purposes of curriculum through well designed, flexible frameworks and pathways. Ensure students strive for excellence in whichever curriculum pathway they choose. Provide equal access to coherent, comprehensive learning programmes, appropriate to students abilities and aspirations. Engage with external providers: Training Organisations, Open Access, TAFE and Universities as relevant to our students needs to access to externally provided courses Provide specialist staff to meet the extraordinary needs of students. Attract, retain and form excellent staff teaching and non-teaching. Develop and implement succession plans and mentoring programs in response to the staffing profile and needs of the College.

8 Pastoral Care and Well-Being GOAL 3: To provide a quality program of pastoral care based on personal responsibility and high expectations, developing resilience, ensuring security and acknowledging the intrinsic relationship between wellbeing, pastoral care and student learning Develop and implement a well-being program across the Middle and Senior Schools and the Boarding House. Ensure that the pastoral care of students is explicit and has authentic applications in daily life by working in partnership with families to support the holistic growth of each student. Focus on the development of personal and social responsibility in students and the opportunities that we can provide for this development. Review and enhance student leadership programs and structures. Review and enhance the Pastoral Care and Well- Being structures and policies of the College. 3

9 Community Participation GOAL 4: To develop and promote a strong sense of community to enhance the educational program at both a local, national and global level, especially across the Marist Community Continue to reinforce and affirm the rich family spirit which underpins SHC. Create a safe, healthy, supportive and respectful learning and working environment. Recognise and celebrate significant achievements by members of the community both students and staff. Conduct parent/care-giver forums focused on relevant, topical issues. Continue to provide volunteer, immersion and other activities which contribute to communities beyond our own. 4

10 Resource and Environment GOAL 5: To provide quality facilities and respond strategically to future resource provision and environmental management so as to provide an accessible, high quality learning environment for the families of our region Implement the 10 Year Financial Plan developed in Develop and action financial strategies to ensure minimal fee increases. Ensure that due consideration and support is provided to families under financial duress. Continue to seek tangible means by which to reduce our carbon footprint. Aim to ensure that each campus has equitable, excellent facilities and grounds. Implement the Marist Schools Australia required compliance regime. 5

11 Boarding Community GOAL 6: To ensure that the Boarding Community is alive with family spirit, high expectations and is a safe and inclusive community for boarders and their families Continue to build the relationships between Boarding Families and the Boarding House. Report on the Boarding Students progress against the Marist Characteristics. Aim to ensure that we have a full Boarding enrolment. Continue to upgrade and refurbish our Boarding Houses. Consolidate and expand the Indigenous Boarders Program. Encourage and facilitate interaction between the Boarders and the 'Day Students' and their families. 6
