Dear Parents, From the Principal Continuing from my Thought for the Week Julie Farr and Michelle East are facing long and rough journeys. Julie s children are Cooper in Year 2 and Lachlan in Year 5. Michelle children are Mason in Kinder, Ruby in Year 2 and Lily in Year 6. These ladies are not well but I know all of our prayers and support will go a long way. At the moment Jason Farr and David East are doing their best with Grandparents to cope with what life s thrown at them. St Pius X is noted for its Pastoral Care you have always assisted in a variety of ways to go that extra mile. Mrs Taylor has kindly offered to coordinate a Roster for the food, she and the Kinder parents of last year did a fabulous job helping a family in need in Once again, if you can offer your assistance please see Mrs Jo Taylor. Keep an eye out for s from your class teacher if your would like to help. We are hoping food will be sent to these families. One major item to note: the East family are GLUTEN FREE. If you are able to cook, please drop the dish at school and we will handle the delivery. Our drop off point is the front office. If you are unable to do this it is ok but perhaps you could assist in other ways, e.g. offering support and comfort, helping transport children to and from school, housework.

Mr Cant take a bow! A very well organised carnival which of course ran smoothly thanks to Greg s meticulous planning. We thank Mrs Linda Densmore Sports Consultant of our Diocese for her invaluable help! Linda is the Guru of sport, there isn't a rule which Linda doesn't know.congratulations to our St Pius X swimming team who did very well. Thank you Greg, Mrs Bunn, Miss A, Mr Shaw and Mrs Hunt, not to mention all the officials in the recording office, referees, etc and Nick the manager of the pool. It was a super day! We have quite a packed itinerary, please hep us in your prayers. Well parents remember, as we commence the season of Lent on Wednesday what are we going to do for Lent? 3 The Premier s Reading Challenge begins Week : Each year our school participates in the Premier s Reading Challenge (PRC). The 2019 Challenge opens on 4 March and closes for students on 30 August. It is important to note that at the conclusion of the Challenge each successful participant will receive a certificate and will appear on the PRC Honour Roll. If you do not want your child s name on the Honour Roll then they cannot complete the Challenge. You will need to see your child s class teacher about this. Every student in Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 will complete the Challenge together during class. Years 3 through to Year 6 will be introduced to The Challenge in their library lessons and it will be up to them to read a certain number of books to complete the Challenge: Challenge Number of books you must read Minimum number of PRC books Maximum number of Personal Choice books PRC booklists you can read from K-2 30 IN CLASS , 5-6, , 7-9 Teachers and library monitors will require a "proof of reading". As students write a book title on their paper PRC reading log they will need to tell a library monitor, classroom teacher or librarian about the book they have just read and have that person initial next to the book title to confirm it has been completed. After that time the student can enter their book online. Further information is available on the website We strongly encourage involvement in the PRC as it is another opportunity to read for enjoyment. PRIZES will be awarded to: The primary class who has the most children complete the challenge and has correctly logged them online as well as on their paper reading log which must be initialled by a teacher or library monitor. (This will be worked out as a percentage so it is fair for smaller classes) - Pizza Party! The student who reads the most books in each primary class will receive a Book Club voucher with the value amount depending on the number of books read! Every primary student who successfully completes the PRC will receive a lollipop. Every infant child will receive a certificate for participating in the PRC.

4 Overdue Books: Children are allowed a maximum of 2 weeks loan for their library books. If a book has not been returned after this, a reminder will be sent home. If the book has still not been returned by the end of the term, a note requesting $10 replacement fee, will be sent home. At the end of each year a stock take is done to determine what books are in the library or may have gone missing. Children who still have overdue books at the end of the year will have the replacement fee added to their school fees. Please note that children are not able to borrow until they have returned their overdue books or paid the $10 replacement fee. Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated! Thanks and happy reading, Alicia O Connor Teacher/Librarian Advance Notice to Parents We celebrate Catholic Schools Week next week commencing Monday 11th March. On Tuesday children are to come to school dressed as a saint. Please don t go overboard this activity is so they can act like a Saint for a day. Their choice, the teachers will be discussing saints on Monday 11th, this will help them get an idea. On Friday 15th March to conclude the week we celebrate Grandparents Day. Liturgy commences 9:30am followed by visits and morning tea prepared by us. Anyone is welcome, this is to say thank you to all that you do for St Pius X. Heather.

5 RE NEWS March 4 th Thank you to our many parents who were able to attend the Sacramental Information Evening last week and to those who were able to make other arrangements. If you were unable to attend any of the meetings, catch up meetings will be held on Wednesday 6 th March at 9.30 am or 4 pm at the Parish Office. Parents need to attend or contact Mrs Rosalie Hosking if they are unable to attend the catch up either. If you or your child has decided not to participate in the sacramental program, could you please let me know. IT IS THE LENTEN SEASON Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent for Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. During this time he fasted and prayed. Lent is a time of self-denial and prayer for us as well. During this period, we are called to focus on becoming closer to Jesus by praying a little more, doing good deeds for others, going without something we like and giving generously to others in need It can be time set aside to renew and prepare ourselves to receive the fullness of life in the resurrection. It s a time for a bit of a spiritual spring clean. After all, the word Lent means Springtime. 6 YEAR 3 at Their Best Year 3 had a special moment last week when they acted out the story of The Potter and the Clay. They had to make a human mould of a scene from the Life of Jesus or Mary. The students were very reverent and focused during this session. BRACKEN HOUSE We had our first visit to Bracken House for We had a wonderful time and the residents were very happy to see us. Our theme for our talks was Dreams and we had some great discussions with the residents about their favourite dreams.

7 From the Assistant Principal Diocese Winter Sports Trials During week nine of this term (29 th March) the Diocese of Bathurst are holding Winter sports trials in Bathurst, the trials consists of: girls netball, hockey and soccer; boys hockey, soccer, rugby union, 11 years rugby league and opens rugby league. If your child is involved in regular competition in any of these sports and is interested in trialing, they will need to bring appropriate equipment (school uniform as normal pack your equipment) on the following days: Soccer Monday 11 th March Opens Rugby League, Union and 11 Years Rugby League Tuesday 12 th March Netball and hockey Wednesday 13 th March Diocesan Swimming Carnival Last Friday we had nine students compete at the Diocesan Swimming Carnival hosted by ourselves here in Dubbo. It was a very busy day with 264 students from all around the Diocese competing. All swimmers did very well with many setting personal best times. Maegan Cameron and Tom Picton both swam very well in their 13 years freestyle and have gained selection in the Dioceses of Bathurst team to swim in Homebush later this month. Congratulations once again to our swimmers, it is a wonderful achievement to make it to this carnival and as you know it is a very high level of swimming, well done. Thanks also to everyone for their support in helping to host this carnival; it is a very big carnival making it very rewarding when it goes off without a hitch as it did last week, this was due to everyone s help and support and I thank you all very much. Return your completed registration form and payment to the school office. 3. Once your payment and registration form are received, you will be issued the competition code and password to sign up 4. Your Tipping Name can be anything you like, but nothing offensive. 5. The address and account name must be the same as what is on the registration.
