1 5 November Issue 6 THE WALLINGTON WEEK Message from the Head Teacher Dear Parents and Carers Welcome back after the half-term break. We have now reached that time of year when many of our Year 13 students are receiving offers from universities having completed and submitted their UCAS forms earlier in the term. This always helps to provide some extra focus at this time of the year. For some courses, especially Medicine, Dentistry or applications to Oxford or Cambridge, students now have to sit additional aptitude tests. Last week we had around fifty students taking the BMAT (Bio Medical Admissions Test) or Oxbridge examinations and this week we have around fifty Year 12 students taking a mock BMAT test. Year 11 also begin their mock examinations next week as part of their GCSE preparation. These exams will continue through to the 22 November and good luck to all involved. The majority of these exams will take place in the Sports Hall so it is important that students are considerate and obey the signs around any exam venue asking for silence so as not to disturb the candidates. We had the GCSE Music Recital last Thursday involving Year 10 and 11 Music GCSE students. This evening gives the students a valuable opportunity to perform in front of an audience and as usual, the standard was very impressive. Well done to all the performers and thank you to everyone who came along to support them. Finally the PFA held their Quiz Night last Friday to help raise funds for the school. It was a highly enjoyable and competitive evening so thank you to the PFA for organising. Richard Booth Celebrating our Students Achievements Archita 11 Curie We are delighted to announce that Archita (11 Curie) has been shortlisted for The Armistice 100 Prize for Schools Poetry Competition, run in association with the University of Lincoln. Entries were all read and judged by the current Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy and so this is an outstanding achievement. Archita s poem will be featured in a collection which will be published with a foreword by Carol Ann Duffy. We wish her the very best of luck in the next stage of the competition.

We were shown various informative and very relevant short films emphasising the dangers young drivers (of our age) can face and how we can avoid these. Videos included those of teenagers speeding and taking other risks while driving and then broadcasted the severity of the consequences. We were then made aware of the 'ripple effect' an accident has on family, friends and emergency services as we were told first-hand experiences of accidents involving young drivers from a mother who lost her son, a victim of a car accident, the police, ambulance and fire brigade. At first, I was not aware of the importance of learning about the massive risks young drivers face, although I feel this program has drastically changed my perspective on this. From the personal experiences of the speakers to the highly informative and emotional videos, every aspect of this school trip has been worthwhile. 4 As a school we are proud to support the Jack Petchey Foundation by participating in the Jack Petchey achievement awards each year. The Foundation recognises and supports the work of young people across the south east of England. Born and brought up in the East End of London Jack Petchey set up the Jack Petchey Achievement Award scheme in order to celebrate the work of students and others who have made a real difference to their school communities What is a Jack Petchey award? Jack Petchey achievement awards are designed to recognise a wide range of achievements. It is not just about being clever, or gifted, but about putting the effort in and doing your best. Winners are nominated by their peers for their efforts in a certain category. They receive a certificate, a pin badge, an opportunity to go to the award ceremony and 250 to spend on something of their choice in school. All students can be nominated from Year 7 to Year 13. What are the categories for this month? For September, October and November we will be awarding three awards, one in each of the categories: September others October November opportunities Compassion - Someone who cares about and wants to improve the wellbeing of the world and Conscientiousness - Someone who works hard and contributes their very best Courage Someone who is not afraid to do what is right or good or to take risks and grasp new What have the awards done for our school?
