1 Term 3 Week 5 16/08/2018 Term 1 21 March 2019 Dear Parents, Term 1 Last week we celebrated Catholic Education Week. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne to celebrate their Catholic identity and the pivotal role they play within their local community. The theme for Catholic Education Week for 2019 was Growing Young in Christ. On Friday, Ms. Mackin and myself took our Senior Student Leaders into St. Patrick s Cathedral to celebrate not only Catholic Education week but also the Feast of St. Patrick. Our School Captains Lana and Darcy carried our school banner in the opening procession into the cathedral. I would like to thank and congratulate our school student leaders: Darcy, Lana, Regent, Lousha, Emily, Tahlia, Ruby and Celeste for representing our school in such a commendable fashion. Following in this theme, the Middles students led our first family mass on Sunday. A big thank to the families who took part in the mass and all in our community who shared in the celebration. Also as part of our Catholic Education week celebrations, we had our beginning of the year community BBQ. The weather provided a magnificent evening, and the sausage sizzle and musicians topped it off. It was wonderful to see so many of our families join us on the night, enjoying each others company and getting to know each other more. Thank you to everyone who attended. We ask that all payments are finalised at the end of Term 3. Junior B Valentina F For being flexible by trading her poster paper to support a classmate who was finding it hard to be resilient. Middle A Savio D For realising that making mistakes is how we improve in our learning. Middle B Rosie D For taking a risk in our class debate about cats and dogs. Rosie bravely stood up for her opinion and backed it up with evidence. Senior A Ruby S For taking great care and dedication to her line drawing of Anne Frank. Great creativity Ruby! Senior B Jayson S For demonstrating the disposition of reflection by sharing how his understanding in maths changed from the beginning of the session to the end of the session. Junior A Abdallah N For explaining what he did in sentences when writing a recount about our trip to the park. Junior B Nic F For recognising the need for a break and using calming strategies to help him get ready to learn. Middle A Mitchell S For taking an interest in others and celebrating their success. Middle B Lachlan N For collaborating well with his peers by listening to others, contributing opinions and remembering other s ideas in our class debate about cats and dogs. Well done Lachlan! Senior A Claudia V For striving for excellence in maths and tackling challenges with enthusiasm! Great attitude towards learning Claudia! Senior B Nancy P For making the playground a positive space by giving excellent advice to the preps about how to make friends. Farewell to Fr. Anthony It is with regret that I inform the community that Fr. Anthony will be leaving our Parish and returning to Sri Lanka. Fr. Anthony s last mass will be on Easter Sunday, however, to celebrate and thank Fr. Anthony for his contribution and dedication to our Parish and Schools, there is a farewell mass and sausage sizzle on Saturday 6th April at 5.30pm at Sacred Heart Church in Newport. It would be wonderful to see as many of our families at the mass to say thank you and farewell to Fr. Anthony before he returns to Sri Lanka.

Each child should now have a sponsorship form and be seeking sponsors - let s work with Caritas this Lent to achieve their goal: 100% hope for all people! Confirmation Formation Evening All students receiving Confirmation this year have a Formation Evening to attend on Thursday May 9th at 7pm at Sacred Heart Newport. This is a night for parents, students and sponsors to reflect and learn together in preparation for your child s Confirmation. Sacrament Enrolment information will be sent home in the coming weeks. Please keep an eye out! Family Formation evenings are still being finalised. Faith Life Quote and Image for Term 1 ECSI Survey I write to invite you to participate in the ECSI survey, which will assist us in better understanding how our Catholic Identity is expressed in work and practice here at St. Margaret Mary s Primary School. At the end of the survey, you will get a certificate. Please print out or download the certificate and send it through to me to go in the draw for a Movie voucher from the Sun Theatre. The Juniors created superheros to help them think about what positive powers they can use to take action every day.

10 It was great to welcome Martin Sutton from the Resilience Project to the launch of our Year 7 Life to the Full program. Martin emphasized the importance of gratitude, compassion and mindfulness in building resilience. Our Year 7s enjoyed Martin s humour, lively presentation and fun activities. Well done to students who completed the two-hour Camino walk in support of Caritas and Project Compassion. Groups commenced from each campus, meeting at Queen of Peace. It was wonderful to welcome Grade 6 students, our Year 7s of 2020, and their parents, to the Amazing Race evening and BBQ. The Grade 6s joined in mixed school groups to search for clues around the College to various questions and had a great night with lots of fun and excitement. Thanks to our development team, staff, student leaders and the VCAL BBQ crew who did a great job in leading this special night for our newest members of the Emmanuel community.
