1 Chandigarh, May 1: The Education Department, Chandigarh Administration organized its annual sports prize distribution function for the session at Tagore Theatre here today. Adviser to the Administrator, Mr. K.K. Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion. Prizes were given to the sports persons for securing the top positions in inter-school tournaments. Congratulating the prize winners Mr. Sharma encouraged them and said that Sports constitutes an important component of any educational endeavor. After all, a sound mind needs a sound body and this is what exactly can be achieved through promotion of sports in the schools. Sports helps in developing the physical, mental, and even intellectual faculties of students and occasions like that of today provide us with an opportunity not only to motivate the young students to take up sports but also to evaluate the sufficiency of efforts being undertaken in the sports field. He further stated that as many as boys and 7000 girls from all the Govt. schools and private schools participated in 43 sports disciplines in the inter-school tournaments in the year He also said that the Administration is drafting some new policies to promote sports in the city. Also, the initiative of Chandigarh Administration to launch the Chandigarh School Sports and Fitness is also laudable as it intends to take all the students in its fold. Mr. V.K Singh, Finance cum Education Secretary explained that a joint initiative by the UT Administration and the CLTA has been instrumental in the introduction of tennis coaching program in 4 Govt. Schools. Along with it, plans to boost 20 Basketball courts, Volleyball and other sports are also underway. A welcome song was sung by the students of GMSSS Sector-35, Bangra was presented by the children of GSSS Sector-38-West. Of India is organisining CHANDIGARH BOOK-FAIR 2013 in the month of November this year. In this regard a meeting of the core committee chaired by Sh. Mohd. Shayin, IAS, the Deputy- Commissioner, U.T. Chandigarh was held. The meeting was attended by Joint Director, National Book Trust, Deputy Director (Exhibition) NBT, Director Higher Education, Chairman, Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi,Principals, Librarians and others. Sh. Mohd. Shayin informed that the Chandigarh Book Fair-2013, is being held after a gap of about fifteen years by the Chandigarh Administration. The activities to be added would be author interaction, sit and draw area, Illustrator s corner, Calligrapher s corner, seminars, children corner etc. Then decision on the theme shall be taken later. The venue shall be the leisure valley. It was proposed to call eminent authors during the book fair. Children activates like holding quiz, competitions and organizing various workshops for them were also proposed. A facebook page in the name of chandigarhbookfair has been created; people are also welcome to give their suggestions on the chandigarhbookfair2013@gmail.com
