Congratulations to the U10 boys, U10 girls and U12 girls teams who swam in the IAPS qualifiers at St Teresa's last week. The swimmers have a nervous wait until May to find out whether the time they achieved will be enough to take them to the IAPS finals on 8th June. Good luck and fingers crossed! It is also hugely exciting that Belmont have 3 swimmers who secured qualifying times to take them to the 2019 Surrey Championships. Olivia S qualified for 200 Fly, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 100 Back, along with 50m sprint races, but has unfortunately not been able to swim in the finals due to injury. We wish Olivia a speedy recovery and hope she is back in the pool again soon. Roman P has achieved a fantastic number of qualifying times considering he is swimming as a 10 year old in the 11 age category. He has already secured 6th place in 200 Fly and 8th in 100 Fly, which is extremely exciting for next year. Roman will be swimming over half term in the 50m sprint races at the London Aquatics Centre in Fly Frontcrawl and Backstroke. Connie E has also qualified for 50m Breaststroke. Good luck Swimmers!

5 Page 5 Chinese New Year Children celebrated Chinese New Year with a variety of activities including food tasting, dressing up in traditional clothing, lantern making, Chinese writing and art activities. Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. In Chinese tradition, each year is named after one of twelve animals which feature in the Chinese zodiac and this year is the Year of the Pig.

6 Page 6 Science Year 1 enjoyed a lesson in the Science Lab with Mr Shaw taking part in fun experiments to support their learning about solids, liquids and gases. They turned ice to water to steam to water to ice: full cycle! Year 8 microbiology in action making bread!

7 Page 7 News from the Art Room Above and Below: Year 7 Options group working on props for Joseph Above: Year 4 have been investigating Journeys and have learnt about Aboriginal artist, Emily Kngwarreye (shown opposite). She paints cross-legged and uses lines to represent nature. Below: Exploring the Artist Paul Klee and his use of light and dark colours. Children in Early Years have used block printing to create their own buildings inspired by his painting Castle and the Sun and mixed a range of tints to find out how colours change when white is added to them.

8 Page 8 Boarders News The Boarders have been busy this term and some spoke to the whole school about life in the Boarding House as a weekly, regular or flexi boarder. To add to a new Karaoke machine, the Boarders are fundraising to buy more items for their Common Room. Yesterday morning, they raised 100 towards their growing funds by selling delicious cakes they had baked in school. 9 Page 9 English World Book Day 2019 Thursday 7 th March This is a highlight of the school calendar for the English Department and, once again, we are planning many exciting activities to inspire the pupils to read regularly for pleasure. All children in the school, from Early Years to Year 8, are invited to dress up as a character from a book. This year our theme is Magic, Machines and Monsters meaning you can journey far and wide: to the depths of Neverland or Oz, to Middle Earth or Narnia! Why not stalk the corridors as Professor Snape, galumph as the Gruffalo, wander the corridors as the dragon Eragon or fashion yourself as a mythical Cyclops? Of course, your monsters can be metaphorical! Why not come as the terrifying Miss Trunchbull or the Grand High Witch?! We look forward to seeing your wonderful imaginative ideas and we hope you will take your interpretations as far as you can! Please ask your child s form teacher for help if you are struggling for ideas. More details will follow in due course. For the time being, the priority is to help your child to plan a creative costume (and to guess what Mrs. Skrine will be wearing this year)!
