1 St. Catherine School MINUTES OF THE SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING Thursday, Attendees: Dan Osborne Viktoria Mustapic Tom Bamford Kelly Murray Tara Clayton Joanne Patton Tracy Smith Darcie Kelly Megan Pratt-Konowalchuk Micheele Guerrero Meeting Called to Order: Tom Bamford, School Council Chairperson 9:06 a.m. Opening Prayer: Approval of Minutes: Chairpersons Report: Principal s Report: Viktoria Mustapic Assistant Principal Tom made motion to approve minutes of Wednesday, September 13 th, Seconded by Joanne Patton. All in favour MOTION APPROVED Tom welcomed those in attendance and mentioned what a great turn out we had at the last meeting. He stated that we have entered the season of fundraising and had nothing to report to the council at this time. Dan Osborne Dan welcomed and thanked everyone for coming to the meeting. Month in Review: September was a great month. The school had a successful opening liturgy and a sunny day For the Terry Fox walk. The teachers discussed possibly having the division 1 students walk around the perimeter of the field next year instead of walking down to Fish Creek as a few were rather tired after the excursion. Discussion ensued that it may be a bit of a walk but really gives the children a sense of their schools placement within the community. The teachers Professional Development Day was spent learning about the CLEVR program. As the district moves towards a digital way of communicating keeping up-to-date on the uses of technology is very important. Ms. Straw led the teachers through an in depth session on how to incorporate scanned documents into the process. Dan thanked Viktoria for her efforts in opening communications and working on increased participation between St. Gerard s Church and our school community. Doreen, from St. Gerard s was present at our opening liturgy. She and Father Tran will be visiting our school during the year to partake in our school liturgies. 1

2 The first of two school lockdowns occurred and was well received by all students. The first lockdown is announced so that students are prepared whilst the second practice lockdown will be unannounced. Dan asks that any parent that would like to know more about the whys and how s of our school lock down procedures to let him know as he would be happy to set up an information session with our school resource officer, Officer Baker. Megan asked if we had had any new student enrollments since last month to which Dan responded that we have not. He mentioned that at this time our school is no longer able to accept Non-Catholic students from within or outside our boundaries as our numbers are increasing and we must leave room to accept new future students from our Catholic community. School Council Roles For Executive Positions for the school year Tara Clayton motioned to nominate Tom Bamford as President. Kelly Murray seconded. All in favour. Tara Clayton motioned to nominate Megan Pratt-Konowalchuk as Vice President. Tom Seconded. All in favour. Tara Clayton motioned to nominate Tracy Beaton (not present but who accepted nomination remotely) as Treasurer. Tom Bamford Seconded. All in favour. Tom Bamford motioned to nominate Joanne Patton and Jara Spence as joint Secretary. Kelly Murray seconded. All in favour. 3 Fundraising Committee Report: Mrs. Tara Clayton Tara reported that we have not received much volunteer help response for the Turkey Trot being held tomorrow. She asked Dan to send out a friendly reminder this evening. The next fundraiser event will be the Grocery Store gift cards. A discussion ensued and it was decided that gift card sign up sheets will be sent out on Friday, November 2 nd with a return date of November 16 th. Cards will then be made available for pick up during Parent/Teacher Interviews the night of November 30 th and during the day on December 1 st. Tracy Smith and Joanne Patton will help organize. Upcoming Events & Activities: Mrs. Kelly Murray Kelly submitted the expenses from June 2017 for the teacher s garden party luncheon ($278.92); the Grade 6 Farewell lunch ($296.41); and the end of year BBQ ($). She then asked that a budget for similar events this year be made. A discussion ensued with a proposed budget of $ for the school dance; $ for the June BBQ; $400 for the Grade 6 luncheon; miscellaneous for teachers lunch and incidentals. Kelly motioned to propose a budget to the Education Society for $ to cover the aforementioned parent council events for this year. Tara Seconded. All in favour. MOTION PASSED Special Lunch: Dan Osborne for Mrs. Tracy Beaton This month s fun food is on October 31 st and will be Booster juice and hot dogs and the theme is Dress Up as Your Favourite Storybook Character. New Business: Upcoming Fieldtrips: The grade 5 s and 6 s will be golfing at Canyon Meadows golf course in the spring! Dan mentioned this was made possible with a lot of support from the Guerrero family to which he was very grateful. Dates will be weather dependent but it will be organized so that it does not interfere with the Grade 6 provincial tests. Dan mentioned that our school was one of five approved by Golf Canada in association with Golf Town Shawnessy to receive a golfing package. This package will contain items to help our students practice and learn about the sport of golf. The Grade 3 s and 4 s will be going to the Canyon Meadows swimming pool in March/April. The Kindergarten, Grade 1 s and 2 s will be participating in inline skating with Alien Inline Skating coming into our school. Future dates to be set. 3

4 Mrs. Doyle will be taking the Grade 5 s and 4 s to the Calgary Waste and Water Treatment plant this month. Mrs. Beaton s grade 2/1 class is the first of three classes to participate in the highly acclaimed Open Minds school. They will attend the Glenbow Arts Common down town for one whole week. There topic of Who Am I will be an in depth look of where they fit as an individual in the groups, communities and world around them. This program will then be brought back to school where they will expand on what they learnt over the course of the year. Ms. Panera s grade 3 class and Ms. Krasman s grade 3/2 class will be participating in the Open Minds School in the spring. A great deal of work went into applying for this program by all three teachers and it will be exciting to see what they all bring back from the experience. District s Faith Theme: This year our Faith theme is Ask, and it will be given to you; Mathew 7:7 We have a plaque made with this scripture passage engraved on it that will be displayed at the front entry way of our school. Upcoming Liturgy Dates: Viki is working with the Liturgical team at St. Gerard s Church. The diocese is moving towards bringing the sacraments back into our schools so that children can make their preparations together. This is a work in progress. All grade 6 families were provided with the information to apply for tickets to this event. Some families have received their tickets and it sounds like organizers may be trying to keep participants from the same school in the same section. Wish List for School events for this year: Based on the discussion regarding our school budget this year Dan is going to revamp his figures and bring to the next meeting. Dan explained to council the use of the new Smart TVs in relation to Smart Boards. It was an educational discussion regarding the changes in technology and how they fit the futures of our schools. Smart TV s are fabulous tools, which are being integrated within our classrooms and learning commons. We have two of them, one in Mr. Birmingham s classroom and one in the Learning Commons. A handout was given, created by Miss Sara on all the uses she has planned for the Smart TV in the learning commons.
