Congratulations to all of the students and teachers on the day s efforts! Visual Arts Day, what a fun day! Last week all students at Glendenning Public School participated in our annual Visual Arts Day! Classes moved between rooms throughout the day and produced a variety of artworks using different media, such as paint, paper, pens, pencils, oil pastels and more! Our artworks from the day will be displayed in the hall and you are invited to come in and view our masterpieces. Thank you to all the students for their amazing behaviour on the day and I believe we have some future artists in our school. Miss Herbert. Reeghan, Japjit and Olivia s Monet inspired Waterlilies with Miss Mohr

2 Munashe, Charlotte and Breanna s Japanese Carps with Miss Cole Shade and Heat I think everyone would agree that we d like a change from the long run of hot weather. I also know that these conditions can make parents afraid about students being exposed to heat and sun at school. There are a number of ways we reduce the effects of heat and sun at Glendenning, including: Monday assemblies are held early in the day and students are allowed to sit Other assemblies throughout the day (outside rooms) are all under shaded areas When the temperature reaches 35C all students stay in air conditioned rooms at lunch and afternoon tea times Lunch time in terms 1 & 4 (during daylight saving) is in the hour before the universally accepted time for dangerous sun rays and afternoon tea is towards the end of the time. Students have access to sun creams The COLA area is for quiet activities at lunch and afternoon tea times The library is available for students to access at lunch and afternoon tea times All students are expected to wear hats if playing in the back playground. Students have access to water in classrooms throughout the day. When these hot times occur, there is always discussion around increasing our shade areas. We have looked at this on a number of occasions throughout the years. The courtyard area could possibly have a large COLA installed but for various reasons, the roof could not be within a certain distance of other roof areas and would require numerous poles and drainage systems (this would cause a clutter for students to navigate and we already have a number of accidents with students (and teachers!) being hurt by walking into poles. Addiitonally, we already have some trouble with areas becoming slippery in winter and a huge COLA would make this worse. I am only too happy to take an interested parents for a walk through our playground to explain the restrictions we encounter. We could hold assemblies in the COLA area each Monday but there would be problems with fitting parents in and the time taken to dismiss classes from this area would take from valuable learning time. Overall, I believe the school is achieving its Sun Smart goals and that students are afforded as much protection as needed.

3 Congratulations to our Swimming Squad The swimmers from Glendenning Public School will be going to represent our school at the Blacktown District Carnival soon we wish them all the very best success! Well Done to our Outgoing P&C and Congratulations to our Incoming P&C Executive! On behalf of all students, teachers and parents I would like to publicly thank the members of the 2017 P&C. The core group of executive worked tirelessly to raise funds, provide uniforms and support the school throughout There is a lot to be done in 2018 and I congratulate the following people on their election. President Mrs Vorobieff Vice-Presidents Mrs Moylan and Mr Collins Secretary- Mrs Kember Treasurer Mrs Edmunds Uniform Shop and Fundraising Mrs Estall I know the above group will be supported by other P&C members as well and I thank them for their commitment. Yours faithfully, Doug Meaney Principal Permission Notes When completing permission notes for excursions and activities please write your child s full legal name (as per their birth certificate) on the note. These notes are legal documents and need to be completed fully. We have had many instances where only a first name has been provided.

4 Field Events Field Events will involve students from Years 2-6 who will turn 8-13 years old this year. Date: Monday 26 March to 2 February 2018 (Week 5) Time: 9 am 3 pm Venue: Back Playground Events: High Jump Shot Put Long Jump Students will need to wear their sport uniform to school all week and ensure they have a drink bottle, hat and sunscreen. Miss Milledge Athletics Coordinator Senior Dance Group This year all Year 5 and 6 students were invited to audition for the Senior Dance Group- Show Group. This group will consist of approximately 20 students who will be auditioning for festivals and performance opportunities this year. There will be a cost involved for costs and travel to the festival if our school gets through the auditioning processes. Unfortunately, whilst there was a large number of students interested, not all of them were able to be part of this group. When participating in festivals there is a limited number of students allowed on the stage for safety reasons. However, all Years 5 and 6 students will be invited back in Term 3 (June) to join the Senior Dance Group and a new dance will be learnt to be performed at the concert. Ms S.Summerrell Senior Dance Teacher
