Please ensure you attend this very important evening. Increased capacity at KS3 We will be increasing our capacity in Years 7, 8 and 9 by appointing an assistant phase leader for years 8 and 9. Once this appointment has been made, we will inform students and parents as soon as possible. Uniform policy I am grateful to the parents and carers who continue to support our high expectations at the school. I am concerned that there are still students who feel that hoodies are acceptable and that outdoor coats are allowed in school. They are not. Please emphasise this to your children as we will continue to confiscate items of incorrect uniform. Pre Public Exams PPEs will take place in Math, English and all other subjects will take place for year 11, 12 and 13 in the coming weeks. We will continue to support the young people who are finding work stressful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you feel we need/could do more. Sixth Form Enrolment Enrolment into the sixth form is now going really well. And we are overwhelmed by responses both internally and externally. My concern now is that our students work really hard and reach the grades they need to get on the courses they have applied for. In the event of severe weather we shall do everything we can to remain open but if at any time you wish to check if the school is open, you may do so in the following ways. Grey Court uses OpenCheck, a service operated by LGfL to provide up-to-date information to parents or carers, indicating whether a school is open or closed. 3 Grey Court School Year 7 Ms White (Head of Yr 7) Happy New Year and welcome back Year 7. I hope that you all had a very enjoyable and restful break and feel ready to make a fresh start and make the most of all the new opportunities that a new year and a new term bring. There are lots of exciting things planned in the upcoming weeks and I am really looking forward to beginning this phase with you. As mentioned in the Christmas bulletin, the holiday period was the perfect opportunity to replace any damaged or lost equipment and uniform. If any issues are still outstanding, please ensure that they are resolved forthwith, as we really want to consistently demonstrate what an outstanding year group this is and the first step in doing so is looking the part. I would like to remind all students that trainers and nail varnish are not uniform standard and jewellery must be kept to a minimum (one plain ring, one pair of plain stud earrings, one bracelet and one necklace, which must be worn under the blouse). If you have any queries or problems regarding equipment and uniform, please do not hesitate to contact me. Yoga Club for KS3 students starting 17 January 2017 Details attached to this ebulletin Year 8 and Year 9 Mr Ridley (Head of Yr 8/9) Welcome back! I hope everyone had some time to relax over the Christmas holidays and didn't eat too much. The New Year can represent a time of change, with resolutions being made and people reflecting on what they have or have not accomplished over the last 12 months. So we should all ask ourselves: what do I want to achieve this year? As mentioned in assembly before we broke up for Christmas, Mr King and I are having a big focus on our uniform standards in the new year. We will be checking the uniform of all students in the school building to ensure we are dressed and presented according to our expectations and the school uniform policy. Those that do not follow these rules will be sanctioned on the same day as their offence. Most of you are dressed immaculately and should carry on being role models to those lower down the school. Well done! The medical room is a facility where trained staff will assess the illness or injury to students. If you are feeling unwell enough to visit the medical room, you must follow instructions and leave it up to the staff to contact home/parents, if they deem it necessary. 11 Grey Court School Sports person of the month December George Rees Year 9 George Rees is an outstanding athlete who has shone during the indoor season at Lee Valley. George ran the 300m in the 1 st round of the competition. He finished 1 st with a superb time of 40.7 seconds. In the semi final, George ran the 800m and again finished 1 st in a Personal Best of seconds. George also ran the opening leg of the 4 x 200m relay. In the final, George finished 2 nd in , another excellent time.

12 Grey Court School Sports person of the month December Freya Davidson YEAR 9 Freya Davidson has unfortunately suffered from a foot injury for the majority of last year and recently broke her finger but this did not prevent her success in high jump. In the Lee Valley Athletics London Indoor Athletics meet in December, Freya jumped a PB of 1.45m and finished 3rd in a very competitive London semi-finals. Freya is a natural high jumper and with some more training could be unstoppable.

13 Grey Court School Sports team of the month December The December Team of the month goes both to the Grey Gymnastics team and Grey Court Dance squad. It was the first time that GC entered the Regional schools gymnastics competition and the Borough London Youth Games Squad. The dance squad consisted of an extremely committed group of girls who practice twice a week for months. They performed a contemporary dance piece, with the concept of bad dreams vs good dreams. A special mention goes to Mabel Licorish and Violet Stutz who assisted Ms Sallis in choreographing the dance. All the girls danced superbly and finished 4 th in the borough. Grey Court PE department entered its first ever gymnastics team into the Milano Team Gymnastics London Regionals on Friday 2nd December. The talented gymnasts competing in the Under 16 category were Jess Knott, Roisin Hanlon, Jasmine Wildey and Saskia Van Dalen. In the U14 category we had Lily Wildey, Mia Shingler, Sienna Griffiths and Amelia Shaw. All the girls had to perform a group sports Acro routine, an individual artistic routine and two vaults. The girls had been training hard three mornings a week for months so that they were fully prepared. Considering we were the only non-independent school and Grey Court has not traditionally specialised in gymnasts, all the girls performed superbly. The highlight was the U16 trio who finished 3rd, above local rivals LEA, City of London, Putney Girls and many other specialist gymnastics schools. Next year we aim to give Surbiton School a run for their money. All the girls should be very proud of their achievements; many of their performances are available to view on the Grey Court PE twitter Account.

The only antidote to all this venom is his friendship with fellow outcasts Travis and Lydia. But as they are starting their senior year, Dill feels the coils of his future tightening around him. Dill s only escapes are his music and his secret feelings for Lydia neither of which he is brave enough to share. Graduation feels more like an ending to Dill than a beginning. But even before then, he must cope with another ending one that will rock his life to the core. Debut novelist Jeff Zentner provides an unblinking and at times comic view of the hard realities of growing up in the Bible belt, and an intimate look at the struggles to find one s true self in the wreckage of the past. Passenger by Alexandra Bracken "Expert... Passenger succeeds as an adventure, as a romance and as a comparison of cultural norms." -New York Times Book Review "Riveting, romantic... Fans of Outlander will see so much of Claire in Etta, who holds a smart and headstrong lens to history. I can't wait to voyage through the next volume." -Victoria Aveyard, New York Times #1 best-selling author of Red Queen In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles, but years from home. And she's inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she's never heard of. Until now. Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods-a powerful family in the Colonies-and the servitude he's known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can't escape and the family that won't let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, his passenger, can find. In order to protect her, Nick must ensure she brings it back to them-whether she wants to or not. Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods' grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home forever. 23 Grey Court School Department of Sport and Physical Education Ham Street, Ham, Richmond, Surrey. TW10 7HN Yoga Club 4 th January 2017 Dear Parents/Guardians, Grey Court is committed to the development of extra-curricular wellbeing activities within the school. We strive to offer a varied and alternative timetable which appeals to and provides an enriched and enjoyable experience for all the students. As part of this, we have organised a yoga teacher to come in and deliver a Yoga Club in the school. Sarah Tucker is a qualified yoga instructor, journalist and author of titles including The A to Zen of Yoga: How to Get Rid of Emotional Baggage by Touching Your Toes. Sarah has been teaching yoga to children and adults for many years, including teachers and students at Grey Court School. The yoga club will teach vinyasa yoga, which is a constant flow from one posture to the next, combining balances, stretches and twists. This type of yoga engages the body, mind and spirit in equal measure, and is suitable for all ages and body types. The focus of each week will be different, however postures and sequences which cultivate concentration, stress and anger management and alleviate anxiety, are at the root of the practice. The club will start on Tuesday 17 th January and will run for 10 weeks. It is open to all key stage 3 students at Grey Court. The club will run for one hour, from pm, and the cost of each session will be 3. A total of 30 needs to be paid in full by Friday 13th January to the Finance department. The slip below also needs to be signed and returned with payment. Places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there are any queries or questions then please do not hesitate to contact me. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child as we continue to broaden our contacts within the community to get more and more students taking part in fun and enjoyable physical wellbeing activities. Yours Sincerely Sharon Mercer Director of Wellbeing Students name: Parent/guardian signature: Form: Date: Method of Payment Cash Cheque payable to Grey Court School Online under the tab marked Yoga Sessions (This is on the other products menu) I will be writing to Mrs Mercer for financial assistance
