1 SCHOOL NEWS 29 NOVEMBER 2018 Dear Parents and Carers ADMISSIONS POLICY 2020/2021 South Downs Education Trust are proposing amendments to the Worthing High School Admissions Policy from September Changes include: Increasing Published Admission Number to 240 per year group Change to over subscription criteria. The consultation period started on Monday 26 November and runs until Monday 7 January Any comments on the changes to the Admissions Policy should be sent to Karen Hayler (Business Development Manager) by at khayler@worthinghigh.net. UNIFORM As we approach the end of the term, it is timely to send out a reminder about student uniform. Our school uniform is very smart and professional and is often commented on in the locality. We would like to maintain this high standard and ensure that all students are wearing the correct uniform appropriately. We have attached our uniform policy for clarification. Thank you in advance for your continued support. YEAR 11 MOCK EXAMS EQUIPMENT Please can parents and carers check that their child has the appropriate equipment required for their mock exams. Invigilators are having to hand out too many items and, although they can support the requests, it is the student s responsibility to come to the exams fully prepared. In the actual exams equipment will be very limited so please ensure that your child is adequately equipped. YEAR 9 REPORTS Our Year 9 students will be taking their reports home tomorrow and all reports can also be accessed via Insight (our parent portal). As sent out last week, our KS3 reports now include an Agreed Target Grade and a descriptor for each subject which tells you whether, by the end of the year, your child is expected to make Above Expected Progress, Expected Progress or Less than Expected Progress towards their Agreed Target Grade. This is designed to give you a clearer understanding of how well your child is making progress in each subject area. Please note that for our Year 9 students their reports use the descriptors above for all subjects, except for English, Maths and Science. As these three subjects are

2 GCSE courses from the beginning of Year 9, students receive the same reporting as our Year 10 and 11 students do, which includes a Current Grade and a Predicted Grade for the end of the course, ie the end of Year 11. When reports are viewed on Insight you can also see the colour coding of your child s predicted grade descriptor. At KS3, Blue for Above Expected Progress, Green for Expected Progress, and Yellow for Less than Expected Progress. ASSEMBLIES FOR WEEK BEGINNING 3 DECEMBER 2018 The focus for assemblies next week is community and charity, with a focus on helping others as part of a reflection on International volunteer day. The Worthing Way Core Values that we will be reflecting upon are; community, integrity, resilience and respect. More details can be found here: SAFEGUARDING OF BIKE ACCESSORIES If students are leaving their bikes in the bike compound, please encourage them to remove any accessories where appropriate and place them in their lockers during the day for safekeeping. RESIDENTIAL TRIPS Our website has now been updated to provide details on our residential trip programme. Descriptions on each trip, approximate costs and information on the timings of the next launch can be found here: Teaching and Learning/Enrichment Opportunities. WISEPAY APP LAUNCH All parents and carers have been sent information about the new WisePay App. Information and guidance on using the App can be found on our website under Parents/Catering/WisePay/WisePay App. YEAR 7 AND 8 ACCELERATED READER Home connect letters are being sent home again to all Year 7 and 8 students via their English teachers. Here you will find details on how to login to see your child s reading progress on the Accelerated Reader Scheme. Each half term students are set a target to achieve which is personal to their reading levels and worked out on them reading for 15 minutes each day. Please reinforce this at home so students are meeting their targets this will benefit them across all subjects as their literacy skills will continue to improve as a result.

3 REMINDER - CANTEEN CHRISTMAS LUNCH FOR STUDENTS - 12 DECEMBER 2018 The Canteen traditional Christmas lunch will be available on 12 December. The price of this roast turkey meal, 2 courses or vegan alternative will be Booking will open on 19 November 2018 and will close on 7 December. All students must book direct with the Canteen: payment will be deducted from students Wisepay accounts at the time of booking. Students on Free School Meals must also book direct with the Canteen and payment will be taken on 12 December so as not to affect their daily allowance. They should make it clear at the time of booking that they are entitled to Free School Meals. The menu is featured on our website under catering or click here Christmas Menu. The canteen will only be open at lunchtime on this day to those students who have ordered the Christmas Meal. Snack 14 and the Millennium Hall will be open for all students who have not ordered the Christmas meal. CHRISTMAS CONCERT 13 DECEMBER 2018 AT WORTHING HIGH SCHOOL Parents and carers with an address should have received an invitation via Eventbrite to the Worthing High School Christmas Concert to be held on Thursday 13 December between 6.00 and 8.00 pm. A maximum of 3 tickets per family can be booked on the Eventbrite site. Tickets should be printed and brought to the concert; if you are unable to do so please use the link to send a message to the organiser. For those parents without or who are non-residential and wish to attend please contact lgrispino@worthinghigh.net regarding tickets. All are warmly invited to attend a wonderful evening filled with carols, readings and performances to celebrate the festive season. REMINDERS - CHARITY EVENTS Christmas Hampers This year Worthing High School is inviting 60 elderly people from the local Worthing area to have Christmas dinner at the school on 13 December These may be people who would otherwise spend Christmas Day alone, without family or a special meal. We would like to have a hamper for each of the guests to take away with them! Any spare Christmas hampers will go to the community nursing homes and charity organisations such as Salvation Army. Worthing Charity representatives from each form group will help serve our guests dinner on the day, and will be helping to distribute any extra hampers in the community the same week.

4 We have shared this with students this week, and asked for donations for the hampers to be brought into form over the next two weeks. Possible contributions could be: A suitable box (shoe box, printer paper box or similar size), mince pies, Christmas pudding, a cracker, festive sweets or snacks, coffee, tea, tinned food, cereals, jam or marmalade, toiletries, a Christmas card, gloves, scarf, postage stamps or some festive wrapping paper to wrap the box up in! Thank you in advance to students and parents for providing food items and gifts to go into the hampers. Non-Uniform Day The school will be holding a non-uniform day on Thursday 20 December A contribution of at least 1 is asked of students, and the money raised will be split between Save the Children (Christmas Jumpers are encouraged but not essential) and the 2019 Kenya trip, where the money will go towards buying school supplies and educational resources for children. Please see the letter giving more details on our website under Parents/Letters/General All School. Thank you for the support you show for these very important charities. YEAR 9 - TEENAGE BOOSTER VACCINATIONS LAST REMINDER FOR CONSENT FORMS The deadline for receipt of consent forms for these vaccinations is 5 December 2018, which gives the immunisation team time to order the appropriate number of vaccines. LAST DAY OF AUTUMN TERM 20 DECEMBER 2018 The school will close to students at 1.30 pm on 20 December Any student who requires food from the canteen should obtain it at morning break, including those on free school meals, as the canteen will close at lunchtime. INSET DAYS 3 AND 4 JANUARY 2019 Please note that the school will be closed to students on 3 and 4 January 2019 due to INSET Days. The school day will commence at the normal time of 8.40 am on Monday 7 January 2019 on week 1 of the timetable.
