1 P A R E N T N E W S 27 MARCH 2018 TERM 1 QSLW PHOTO COMPETITION Congratulations to Mia Price, in year 11, who won the inaugural Queensland School Library Week photo competition for secondary. Mia has won a $50 book voucher for herself and $100 book voucher for the school. This was a state wide competition so there were a lot of unusual places to read photos that were submitted. Another photo submitted by the school was Year 7 Sydney Thomson s photo with her horse below. Congratulations to both girls for their creative photography. Last week the students of Malanda High took part in a lunchtime activity where they placed a small note on my board describing how they would stop a bully, or how they would help someone who is being bullied. Each week I am amazed by the students here, they are considerate, compassionate and super enthusiastic. 2 BLACK CHICKS TALKING Recently a number of Indigenous girls in the junior school participated in a program facilitated by Tracey Motlop from Youth Justice. For one of the activities we had a morning tea with some of the local elders in our community. We listened to their stories of hardship and empathised with them. We have learnt strategies to deal with racism. We have also learnt to have a strong sense of self identity and are proud to be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander woman. SENIOR SCHOOL - YEAR 10 PARENTS/CAREERS SATE INFORMATION EVENING In week 10 we will be holding an information session for Year 10 parents (and any other interested community members) regarding some of the key changes in The new Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance (SATE) system will replace our current system for year 11 students in 2019, and all subsequent year levels. If you would like to learn more about the key changes and Malanda High s preparations, come along to hear from some of the team. 3 YEAR 7 CAMP All of the Year 7s went to Camp Paterson for three days. We did things like Archery, Water Wipe Out, Survivor, Obstacle Course, Plugga, Rafting and Spider Walk. The activity that we enjoyed the most was the Water Wipeout. Mrs Greatrex didn t take the news so well back at school, when we told her that there was a brown snake in the water when she was on the big swing! Mrs Cockrem made a new friend, Betty the dummy, who had very strange facial features. Somehow Betty ended up in Mrs Cockrem s cabin! No one knows who was responsible for this. We do know that Mrs Honeyman and T-Roy cannot account for their whereabouts on Thursday evening around 7:30pm. From all of us students, we d like to thank Mrs Greatrex, Mr Turner, Ms Boland, Ms Soper, Mrs Cockrem, Mrs Mrs Cockrem s new friend Betty. Camp Paterson P & C NEWS o Uniform shop will be closed on the student free day Monday 16 th April but instead will be open on Tuesday 17 April from 8.15am-9.00am for the sale of uniforms. o Tuckshop: Check the white board at tuckshop this week for any daily specials. A Specials Menu will be available again after the school holidays. As this is the last week before the school holidays, the Tuckshop will be running down its stock so some menu items or over-the-counter items might not be available this week. Tuckshop will be open for first break only on Thursday 29th March, due to a clean-up before the school holidays and Cross Country with a changed lunch break time that day.

4 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Last week of term has arrived and there is plenty happening around the school. Firstly I welcomed the first group of year 6 students to their Extension Science activities this morning. The students from Malanda and Millaa Millaa Primary schools were busy doing experiments in the labs. All students were wonderful ambassadors for their schools and will no doubt become brilliant High School students. Around the rooms I am checking that students are fully engaged in assessment or the beginnings of new unit work. I have instructed my teachers to move straight onto the next units of work and waste no time. We only have limited days with our students and every day counts. Whilst the students will be engaged in this work I am sure the teachers will add some end of term fun and activities to the lessons. I implore parents to resist taking students away early and not completing the term as is legally required as the children will suffer loss of teaching time. Our P&C will be convening a Special General Meeting on the first Tuesday evening back at school next term. The purpose of this meeting is to accept any nominations for the vacant executive positions. I ask any parent or carer interested in being part of the P&C to give me a call or come to the meeting where they will be made feel welcome and encouraged to have a part to play in the next 12 months. We have had a fantastic first term with all aspects of the school. I believe the student behaviour has set new positive benchmarks and the students are being rewarded across the school. In particular the year 9 s have been so good, Ms Greatrex has organised a trip to the pool on the last day just to say well done. I will be reading and issuing reports at the end of the week and will feedback our academic progress next term. Judging by the classroom atmosphere and the commitment of the students our results will be right on target. Have a safe and relaxing Easter break with your children and be sure to send them back to me safe and prepared for term 2.
