3 Introduction DERBYSHIRE The Sainsbury's School Games is one of the flagship legacy programmes linked to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and sits at the core of the Government's investment in school sport. The programme is set across four levels and is backed by National Lottery funding from Sport England with support from a range of partners including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Youth Sport Trust, Department of Health and the British Paralympic Association. The four levels are: Level 1: Intra School Competition Level 2: Inter School Competition within School Sport Partnership Areas Level 3: Inter School Competition Derbyshire County Finals Level 4: National School Games In order to manage this programme, the Derbyshire School Games Championship aims to coordinate and provide a consistent offer of inter school competition across the county for all primary, secondary and special schools. For 2012/13, it was agreed that 40 priority competitions, in 13 sports would form the Derbyshire School Games Championship. The Championship itself has two main aims: firstly, to focus competition provision to engage as many schools as possible at Level 1 and 2; and, secondly, to recognise the top performing schools in the Level 3 County Finals by awarding the overall champion schools in the primary, secondary and competition plus categories. As the Derbyshire School Games programme aligns itself with the wider work of the Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association (DSSA), these 40 priority competitions are part of a more extensive competition calendar. Importantly, the Derbyshire School Games provides additionality to the traditional competitions, cups and championships organised by each of the 14 DSSA sport sections. The following pages highlight the results for each Level 3 County Final; the Primary, Secondary and Special Schools Derbyshire School Games Championship Tables; the outstanding achievements of school teams in regional and national School Games competitions; and the number of young people, young leaders and schools involved in the programme. In particular over the 2012/13 academic year, 16,761 young people took part in the Derbyshire School Games at Level 2 coming from 1,812 different teams. This resulted in 2,432 young people taking part in the Level 3 County Finals from 278 teams and a total of 134 different schools. The Level 3 finals were also ably supported by 236 young leaders. 3
