1 S i n g l e t o n H e i g h t s P u b l i c S c h o o l N e w s l e tte r T e r m 2 W e e k M a y R E S P E C T R E S P O N S I B I L I T Y E X C E L L E N C E Principal s Report Thank you to the executive staff for leading the school in my absence last week, including attendance at the P&C Meeting and coordinating the everyday running of the school. NAPLAN was very well organised across the school and I hope your child was able to engage successfully in this snapshot of their current level of ability in Literacy and Numeracy. It is so wonderful to see so many Mari awards being handed out daily, as many students come to my office to share the fact that they have received one of these prestigious awards. When students collect three Mari awards, they receive a prize from the Principal. When 6, 9 or 12 awards are collected, they receive a prize at each interval of three, as well as a certificate on the assembly. Keep up the good work! Congratulations to students, staff and families on another successful Athletics Carnival yesterday. Thank you to the P&C and their band of volunteers for running the canteen on the day. Thank you so much to all the parent volunteers who helped out with the setting up, timekeeping and judging etc throughout the day. Thank you to the staff for going above and beyond to ensure the students had fun and enjoyed success. Special mention to Mrs Baker, Mr Orr, Mrs Morrow, Mrs Dagg and Mr Ingram for providing that extra special support needed to ensure that success. The students were positively vocal in their support of their house team mates throughout the day, and our competitors were outstanding. Four school records were broken on the day, Cooper Meldrum 12 year boys 100m (a record that has been held at the school since 1983!), Jon Penton 10 year boys 200m, Emma Meldrum 8 year girls 100m and Kai Baker 10 year boys 100m. 2 Josie Hatch Archery Josie, along with her two older brothers was selected in the NSW State Team to compete at the Youth Nationals in Morwell Victoria. In the 4 disciplines she competed in, she came 2 nd in Clout, 3 rd in Field, 3 rd in Target & 3 rd in Short Range. Following the Youth Nationals Josie then went on to compete at the 2018 Trans-Tasman Championships where she had the honour of representing Australia. The competition was really tough with only 6 points between 1 st & 3 rd and Josie came away with the Silver Medal. The Australian Team defeated the New Zealanders and retained the Champions Trophy. Congratulation Josie on your achievements. Year 5 Great Aussie Bush The majority of our Year 5 students will be heading off to the Great Aussie Bush next Wednesday, 30 th May, until Friday, 1 st June. The camp is located near Tea Gardens and has great facilities and activities that make this three-day excursion a very memorable time for our students. We hope they have a wonderful time. Open Knights Knockout Rugby League Our Stage 3 Rugby League team will be playing in the annual Knights Knockout next Tuesday. They will be participating in approximately 5 games on the day. We wish them all the best. Regional Cross Country Ethan Newman, Alexi Lawrence, Riley Thorley, Caleb Moore, Kaiden Boldery and Kealah Boldery will be attending the Hunter Region Cross Country next Friday, at Cessnock racecourse. Good luck and we wish you all the best for a great run. 2

3 MC Public Speaking Our school finals of the Multi-cultural public speaking competition will be held in the school hall next Tuesday, from 11:45am. Stage 2 (Year 3 and 4) will be presenting speeches during the middle session of the day and Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6) will be presenting during the afternoon learning session of the day. Winners and runners up will be going through to the zone finals to be held at Rutherford PS on Monday, 25 th June. Good luck to all of our school finalists. I will be adjudicating the speeches throughout the day. Community Consultation Committee A separate note will go home today, requesting your presence at a Community Consultation Committee meeting next Thursday, from 4pm, in the school library. I would like to establish regular meetings for this group, to oversee aspects of our school plan, related to school community engagement in the overall education of our students. The purpose is to generate feedback from the community, to form better alliances with our parent body, to partner yourself in your child s learning. My aim is to have one parent from each class attend this meeting, with further meetings scheduled, if successful. Come along and share your thoughts! Breakfast Club Just remember that our breakfast club will now be open on Monday mornings, from 8:30am 9:10am, as well as the usual Tuesday and Thursday. We are hoping to sustain the breakfast club with donations from local community organisations, so, if you have any ideas about helping, including being able to serve our students on one of these mornings, please contact the school canteen to let them know. ICAS Science Students who have entered the ICAS Science competition will be sitting for this assessment on Tuesday, 29 th May. Stage 3 Gymnastics All Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6) classes are participating in a four week gymnastics program, as part of our Sporting Schools grant, on Mondays in Week 6, 8 and 9. Please ensure your child is wearing appropriate school uniform, to be able to participate comfortably on these days. Singleton High School Enrichment Class A reminder to any year 6 students interested in applying applications for the 2019 Enrichment class will close this Friday at 4pm.
