1 Payment Information: Oropi School BOT Bank Account Term 3 Week 3 Friday 11th August 2017 From The Deputy Principal Happenings up the Hill this week: As part of the Authors in Schools Programme, on Wednesday afternoon, Gareth Ward, an author from Havelock North spent the afternoon speaking to our Year 5-8 Students about being an author, his inspiration as a writer, and his latest award-winning book The Traitor and the Thief. With a little magic thrown in, he captivated his audience, who also had some probing questions about his life and experiences. This morning we farewelled a group of International Students from China at a special assembly, during which time, gifts were exchanged, and the students presented speeches and performed a musical item. This group, accompanied by their parents and teachers, has been actively involved in school life at Oropi this week, taking part in classroom programmes, and discovering more about the Bay of Plenty Region. On Wednesday afternoon a group of 38 students from Year 4-8, departed for the mountains as part of our annual Snow Camp. We know they will all have a great time, and arrive home with many memories and experiences to share with family and friends. Thank you to the parents who made themselves available to accompany the group, along with staff members Mrs Pendergrast, Mr Turner, and Mr King. Robert Lewis, Deputy Principal On Wednesday afternoon our Junior School Team was treated to a visit by Constable Mark Chapman and his four legged friend Vito. This visit was prompted by their Inquiry topic centred around Exploring the way animals help us in the Community. Students learnt how the dogs help the police by having a strong sense of smell and being fast runners. Vito entertained through displaying some of skills and tricks.

2 Notices Parking Please DO NOT park your car in the spaces by the library after School. These are strictly reserved for after school care vehicles from pm. Please also DO NOT park on the curb by the bus-turning bay. This restricts access and visibility for the School buses. Digital Newsletters You will notice that s will be sent more often with links that take you to a google form. We are hoping this will make it easier for newsletters and notices to come home safely and not get eaten by the School bag monsters. There will be spare paper copies available from reception and we will continue to send home paper copy to those families who do not have an address. Cycle Safety & Winter Tournament If you are a Year 5 or 6 student you need to complete the following links regarding Cycle Safety & the Winter Tournament. Cycle Safety - Winter Tournament - Year 8 Tauranga Girls College Interviews Letters are coming home on Monday regarding interviews that are being held at the Oropi Memorial Hall on Friday 18 th August. Interviews will start at 9am and will be booked in 15-minute slots. Disco The Disco is coming up next week. The junior disco will be at 6.00 pm 7.00 pm and the senior disco from 7.15 pm 8.30pm. We have a great DJ booked for the evening and it is sure to be a great time for the kids. The theme is In The Jungle so dress accordingly. Tickets are $5 for one child or $10 for two or more children. The ticket price include a small treat pack including a glow stick and a few other goodies. Food must be pre-ordered before Thursday 17 th on Kindo or at the office. We will need 10 parents from the junior School and 10 parents from the senior school to help with supervision. Please indicate on Kindo when purchasing tickets if you can help, or contact the office. There will be spot prizes and prizes awarded to the best dressed. We are taking song requests in the classroom. If your child has a favourite song that they want played by the DJ, they can add it to the list in their classroom. Before & After School Care Information We are looking at before and after school care options and would like to invite families who are interested in this service to click the link below and complete a few quick questions to gauge interest. Foodbank Donations Thank you for supporting the Foodbank Schools Appeal. Arriving late to School A reminder that School starts at 8.55am. All students who arrive after 9am must report to the office before going to the classroom. Absences Please remember to call and leave a message before 9am if your child is absent. Please include the reason your child is absent in the answerphone message (illness or family). Simply calling to say your child is absent is not enough information, as we need to know the reason. We have a new texting system up and running now. If your child has been marked absent on the roll, and we have not been notified, you will receive a text message. Please do not ignore this message. You must text back, or call the absent line to notify us of the reason your child is away.

3 Bus PLEASE remember to notify the School before 2pm if you are collecting your children. We prefer that you phone and leave a message on the answerphone before 2pm, alternatively you can office@oropi.school.nz before 2pm or call the office on before 2pm. Please remember to pay your School Donation We aim to provide the very best learning for your child. In order to supplement our Ministry of Education funding, we ask for a voluntary donation. This donation is voluntary; however, we hope that you will support your child s learning by contributing in this way. Every child in the school benefits from this donation and with your support we are able to maintain and improve our programmes. Please remember that the school donation is tax deductible. If paid after Term One 1 child $ per year 2 children $180 per year 3 or more children $240 per year Payment can be made to the office by cash or cheque, or if you prefer to pay by direct credit, some families find it easier to set up an automatic payment; details of our account are as follows: ASB Please use your surname and donation as a reference. Kindo If you would like help registering with Kindo, please or phone the office. We can easily talk you through the process and get you set up. Friday lunch orders must be handed in to the office before Thursday 9.30am. Kindo orders can be taken until 9pm Thursday. Spare order forms are available from reception or can be printed off the School website. Sport Year 5 & 6 Netball Oropi Pukeko s The girls had a thrilling game last weekend again TAKP Defenders. Oropi won 7 4. Poppy Miller won player of the day for her amazing accurate shooting and Tylah-Rose Reti won the Hot Chocolate voucher. The team finished off at the Oropi Hot Pools to celebrate a great season. The girls play their final game this weekend. We would like to thank Elizabeth Hodgson for volunteering her time by umpiring the team. Elizabeth has been an amazing umpire and has helped the girls improve during the season. Thanks Elizabeth! Little League Last week our Tuis had a convincing 8-4 victory against the TAKP Rockets. Our player of the day for awesome intercepting was Lincoln Anderson. This week our Tuis battled it out against the GP Breakers and though it was neckand-neck until the "free throws", the Breakers came out on top with a very close score of Player of the day went to Jaxson Peeke (main photo) for his neat 'have a go' attitude and his awesome determination. Our Tuis are a strong team and they have come such a long way since the start of the season! Go Tuis!

4 Community Oropi Hall Market Day Oropi School will be holding a stall at the next Oropi Hall market on Sunday 27th August. We will be selling produce from the garden and beautiful school-made fundraising items. If you have an excess fruit, fresh eggs or other produce you would like to donate for this occasion, it would be greatly appreciated!
