1 Edinburgh College Character... through Nurture, Learning and Service Newsletter Term Bountiful Crop The College vegetable garden is back and booming with a couple of tireless Year 10 boys putting in lots of effort. John Remminga and Thomas Waite both enjoy spending Thursday afternoons weeding, planting, harvesting, tying up tomatoes and repairing irrigation systems... and scoffing the odd strawberry on the side. Sometimes we have lost track of the time and spent an hour or more longer than intended. 1 March 1, 2017 What is the Best Thing About School? Some of the Prep students shared what they love best about school so far Stella loves going up to the big Library. Leonardo said the best thing about school is borrowing the play equipment from the sport shed at lunch time. Taylie loves Jolly Phonics and playing on the big playground. Sophie loves playing out on the playground. Joel said he loves everything about school! The figs and watermelon have been eagerly watched in recent weeks and John and Thomas relished the picking and sharing of this one. Both boys are enjoying sharing produce with friends and neighbours, as well as giving the cafeteria first choice for catering purposes. Mr Brooks Leadership Program Over the last two days our College leadership team attended the Education Administrators Orientation program conducted by Adventist Schools Australia. Mr Borgas, Mrs Pascoe, Mr Smith and Mrs Andoh Okai have participated in various workshops and sessions including: Spiritual Leadership in the School Context A Safe and Collaborative Culture Impact on Student Learning Tips on Leadership Panel Discussion Adventist Special Character Directions/Adventist Distinctives Standards/AITSL Standards Teachers and Principals We enjoyed this professional development experience, especially the panel discussions and networking opportunities across both Victoria and Australia. I particularly was impressed by the session on how to use data to challenge your own view. Mr Borgas

2 From Mrs Thorneycroft As a school we value our school community and want to work together with you to support our students learning. In 2017 we will continue to provide a range of curriculum opportunities for the diverse needs of our students and to develop a strong and explicit culture of learning and personal growth. In conjunction with sound pedagogy in the teaching of concepts and skills of the Australian Curriculum, a focus on Technologies coupled with a growth mindset, sets the stage for excellence at Edinburgh College. Finland Experience for Isis & Abbey In January, Isis and Abbey had the opportunity to attend school in the south west of Finland near the city of Turku. Edinburgh staff, Mrs Sawicki and Mrs Jenkins worked with Isis and Abbey to organise for them to board and experience student life at Toivonlinna School for four weeks. Mrs Sawicki attended Toivonlinna as a student for 12 years and also returned to teach and then pastor at the school. Abbey and Isis wish to thank her for making this experience possible for them. I look forward to working with you this year to ensure the best opportunities for our students at Edinburgh College. Mrs Thorneycroft Learning and Teaching Co ordinator Secondary Mottos Respect The Secondary students are exploring the theme of 'respect' this semester as part of the Positive Behaviour For Learning Program (PB4L). Each home room class has devised their own motto of how they conceptualise the theme of respect. Students who model our PB4L principles of respect, resilience, responsibility and willingness to learn are being acknowledged in our Chapel service each fortnight and are rewarded with the choice of receiving a cafeteria voucher or taking their chances in the lucky dip! Congratulations to Tamsin Royle, Chloe Robertson and Daniel Spink for being our top students who demonstrated these themes! Daniel (pictured right) chose the lucky dip. Mrs Harvey Respect is something you must offer and have within yourself before you are able to receive it. 10K Class Motto Fruits of the Spirit Love Last week the following students were recognised for showing the Value of LOVE. This week the value is focused on PEACE. Some of the highlights: Isis and I loved going to Sweden for a weekend to meet people from all over Scandinavia who combined to play volleyball. One of the biggest highlights was attending the school s Gala. On this night Year 10 to 12 students got dressed up and were escorted to a beautiful villa by our partners where we waltzed and listened to amazing live music. It was one of the best nights we had. God blessed both Isis and I so much and He especially made Himself shown to me! On this trip I made new friends and had the best experience of my life but the biggest thing I got out of this opportunity was finding God for myself and growing spiritually. This is an opportunity that should be given to all students at Edinburgh College! It is a once in a life time experience and it has been the best! Isis and Abbey Merit Awards Congratulations to Kai, Caitlin, Sam and Amelie who received Merit Awards this week for being welcoming, cheerful, happy in class and showing love to teachers. Year 9 Art A photography excursion to Montsalvat is a much anticipated event. Students enjoy the ambience and 'old world feel' of this artists' village located in Eltham. The focus is to capture well composed photographs on four themes; portraits, interiors, architecture and rustic subject matter. 3 ELC Busy Kinder Kids Our four year olds have a busy time at Kinder. Over the last week or so they have experienced a demonstration on pizza making by one of the Kinder dads. They enjoyed getting their hands into the dough as well as eating pizza. Former Students Speak in Chapel Ashlee Wong and Luke Hassan returned to Edinburgh to speak to students about their experience transitioning from school to university. Thank you, Ashlee and Luke, for sharing your insights. They have also visited a local aged care facility where they sang songs and gave each resident a special gift of handmade Aboriginal artwork. Both the children and the residents enjoyed their time together and the children are already preparing for their next visit. The kids love Thursday buddy time with students from Year 5 visiting for 40 minutes of reading, playing and doing crafts. "I really like Buddies. It's fun to see our little Buddies learn and because we are older it's great to be able to help them." Caitlin Campbell (Yr 5). SEISS Year 10 Basketball A great effort by both Year 10 teams at basketball last week The girls came 4th overall after improving throughout the day. Our boys gave their all, winning all games in the lead up to the final but with only five players for the day, they became very tired and just ran out of puff. Mr Jones Great Day for Surfing Lessons Students from Yr 10 and 11 who are part of the VET Sport and Recreation Program had the opportunity to learn to surf last Friday at Phillip Island. Most students had never surfed before but quickly came to grips with skills taught by the qualified instructors. Mr Jones FLAG Week Next Week Superheroes with Pastor Ryan. 4 SEISS Swimming Carnival Congratulations to our Edinburgh College swim team who represented Edinburgh College at the SEISS Swimming Carnival yesterday held at Monash Aquatic Centre. For the first time, Year 5 and 6 representatives were included in the team and they performed very well. The boys senior relay team won both the freestyle and medley events. 5 Meet & Greet Evening Please note the Primary Parents/Students Meet & Greet Teacher Evening will now be held March 15. Parents and students will be encouraged to come to the open classrooms to view work on display, meet other families and enjoy some light refreshments. Vanuatu Fundraising Two students have taken the initiative to start fundraising for the Vanuatu Mission trip held later this year by taking advantage of the warm weather to sell ice creams and spiders. Amy (Year 11) and Rebekah (Year 10), will set their ice cream stand up again tomorrow and Friday. Prices range from $1.00 to $2.50.
