We are confident that you watch over our daily efforts and needs, and we take comfort from the faith in the coming resurrection. We look to you, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. 2 Dear Parents New Families We welcome Aussie R (KT) and Amber D (3 Yr Old) and their families to the St Joseph s School Community. We trust you will soon feel a part of the St Joseph s school community. Mary MacKillop s Feast Day Mass Last Thursday we celebrated the St Mary of the Cross MacKillop s Feast Day Mass. Special thanks to Mrs Stapleton and the MacKillop Faction & Vice Captains for preparing the Mass, Fr Noe for leading the Mass, Mr Mills for the music and all parent and friends who gathered as a school community. Perth Cross Country Championships Congratulations to the students that represented St Joseph s in the Cross Country Championships last Friday in Perth. Their commitment to training for this event over the last 2 months has been a credit to them. This event is the biggest Primary School running event in the state - with nearly 2000 students competing on the day, representing over 75 Primary Schools from all over Western Australia. We had some excellent results considering the large number of competitors in each division. Due to a technical problem with the timing equipment, we are still waiting to receive some of our overall team results. The following students from St Joseph s recorded times that put them in the top 50 places for their event. Year Four Girls Lucy B (47 th ), Year Five Boys Jackson N (8 th ) and Tom O (34 th ), Year Six Boys Max B(44 th ). Mrs Charles and Mrs Mungioli spoke very highly of the sportsmanship and cooperation exhibited by the students. Thank you to these two ladies for providing this opportunity for the runners. One to One Device Meeting Thank you to the staff and parents who took part in the One to One Device meeting held on Tuesday 7 August. The purpose of the meeting was to prepare for the extension of One to One devices to year three students in The meeting went very well and we look forward to continuing to provide our students with technology to enable them to be effective learners in the 21 st century. Performing Arts Our Choirs are participating in the Performing Arts competition in Perth today. Mr Mills has been working very hard to prepare the students to their high standard. We are always proud of our Choirs and results will be published in the near future. Congratulations We have received advice from the Performing Arts Festival, Catholic Arts regarding two of our students who recently competed at the Festival in Perth Congratulations to: Ameera A (5M) - Merit Award - Primary Vocal Solo/Duet Brooke G (5M) - Excellence Award - Primary Vocal Solo/Duet Well done girls on your fantastic achievements. Book Week Book Week is next week and the theme is Under the Big Top Circus. Students will need to come dressed up in their favourite circus character on Friday 24 August. Parents are welcome to attend the parade which will be held at 9.00am. This is always an exciting and fun filled event. Please see additional information regarding this event on page six. P&F Raffle There is certainly a large amount of excitement surrounding the P&F Raffle with the major prize of a Thermomix. Just a reminder that all tickets need to be in by Monday 20 August in preparation for the draw on Friday 24 August. Mrs Nicole Scott has organised an opportunity this weekend for raffle tickets to be sold at the Centrepoint and Forum shopping centres. You would have received a sms message seeking volunteers to assist with ticket sales. Even if you are only able to spare 1 hour this would be greatly appreciated. Please do send a message to Nicole to advise of any available time and your preferred day. Year Five Excursion The Year Five excursion took place last Wednesday. The students enjoyed a varied itinerary in visiting the Stanley Road Waste Management Facility and the Bankskia Road Compost Facility in Dardanup. Also in conjunction with their excursion a Waste Audit was held after lunch last Tuesday. Thank you to Mrs Mungioli and Miss Smith for coordinating these two events and to the parent helpers who assisted with the lunch requirements. I am sure the students now have a very good overall view and appreciation of Sustainability and Waste Management in our region.

3 St Joseph s Swim Team Information was sent home to families (Years Four to Six) last week regarding the St Joseph s Swim Team for Term Four. To be eligible students must have completed their Stage Six VACSWIM requirements. The expression of interest forms are due to be returned to the school office by Friday 25 August. Year Three Assembly Please come and join us for the Year Three Assembly this Friday at 9.00am. The theme for the assembly is Australia and Healthy Foods. Award cards will be given out during the assembly. Please remember not to take photos during the assembly as our photographer will take the photos for you. Parents are welcome to take individual photos of their child after the assembly. Footy What an exciting win by the Eagles over Port on the last kick of the game. The second time the Eagles have beaten Port with a kick after the siren. A great strategic move putting Jeremy McGovern into the forward line in the closing stages of the game. Please be aware that photographs of staff and students are being taken, and may feature on the website. All parents have completed a photo permission on enrolment. However, if you have any concerns about your child s photo being publicised on the website please contact the office. We hope that our new website will provide a modern and user friendly form of communication for parents. Parish News The Assumption of Mary We celebrate the Assumption of Mary on 15 August in our church. The article The Assumption of Mary: a Belief from Apostolic Times may be helpful in understanding this feast. AOFMARY.HTM. The belief in this feast is ancient, dating back to the apostles themselves. What was clear from the beginning was that there were no relics of Mary to be venerated, and there was an empty tomb on the edge of Jerusalem near the site of her death. That location soon became a place of pilgrimage. [Today it is the Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition (falling asleep) of Mary. The Assumption looks to eternity and gives us hope that we, too, will follow Mary when our life is ended. St Patrick s Cathedral Parish Youth Group Meet Friday 17 August. The meeting will start at 7:15pm in Our Lady s Chapel where Rosary will be prayed. All parishioners are invited to join the youth in praying the Rosary. Logo Competition The Diocese of Bunbury is seeking a new logo for the Diocesan Youth Ministry Office and we need your help! We are calling for entries from people of all ages for our Logo Competition! The winners will win an Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 Portable Bluetooth Speaker! The winner of the competition will have their name published on our website and social media pages and have their logo used as the official logo of the Diocesan Youth Ministry Office! A Diocesan Youth Ministry Office logo will help us create a sense of identity as well as catch the eye of anyone who sees it! We are looking for something vibrant, youthful and unique. The winning logo will be used on our website and social media pages, letterheads, s, banners, T-Shirts, business cards and other materials. 4 Diocesan Synod Update Because many people have taken the Synod Consultation Sheets home to prayerfully reflect on their responses it has been decided to extend the deadline for response to Friday 31 August. Blank Synod Consultation Sheets and the basket where completed sheets can be placed will remain at the back of the Cathedral. Completed sheets can also be ed to The second consultation - to ask Mass-goers to identify issues they may hear of from non-practising Catholics - was meant to happen this weekend. However, to avoid confusion on the part of those still completing the first consultation, the second consultation will be postponed now to the first weekend in September (1 & 2 September). If you would like to know more about the synod, please see the diocesan website: Melanie Stapleton Assistant Principal; TORCH Term three is traditionally the time in which Years Four to Six students sit the TORCH Test (Test of Reading Comprehension). This test assesses students ability to read, comprehend and retell information from a text in their own words. Rather than providing multiple choice answers, students complete written answers that need to be grammatically correct. We remind the students that the information we gather from this assessment tells teachers what students can already do well and indicates the next logical focus when teaching reading comprehension. So when your child comes home and tells you that they did torture at school, you ll know what they are talking about! MJR: Being contagious Some of our senior students have encouraged the rest of the school to be contagious. At last Friday s assembly they challenged the students and staff to have a different way of expressing their love for Jesus and care for others on each day of the week. Now we have: Manners Monday; Thanking Tuesday; Winking Wednesday; Thumbs-up Thursday; and High-five Friday. Maybe at home on the weekends families and friends can have Smiling Saturday and Serving Sunday. How contagious can you be?
