1 SUMMER NEWSLETTER 3 Where the child is at the heart SUMMER TERM - W/E Dear Parents and Carers, It was a very busy week for the children with a number of events adding to the daily routines. Black Country Museum Visit - Year 3&4 16th May Mrs Drummond led our Year 3 &4 children in a visit to the Black Country Museum. The children were also fortunate because Mr Clamp went too, as part of the group! See the VB Twitter for photographs of the class learning about life as Victorian children. Year 6 children mark the end of SATs Y5&6 Thank you to our super bakers Bella and Sofia for baking and decorating a cake for the whole class to share - once the last paper had taken place! Thanks go to all of the children for co-operating so well and helping the Y6 SATs take place so smoothly this week. PTFA Community News NEWS Fundraising Updates STOP PRESS Whole school visit to Swadlincote Cinema - Monday 9th July 10am Unfortunately, we missed the pantomime visit in December because bad weather resulted in school closure. We are delighted to announce that the PTFA and Office staff have worked together to secure a replacement whole school visit. We have booked a private viewing at the Odeon Cinema in Swadlincote, on Monday 9th of July, for a showing of new film, Sherlock Gnomes.

2 Daily and Weekly Assemblies Summer Term Themes Christian Values focus: Dignity and Respect British Values focus: Individual Liberty SUMMER TERM 2018 PUPILS OF THE WEEK Theme: RELIABLITY Year R/1/2 Harry Year 3/4 Lola Year 5/6 Jorja WELL DONE EVERYONE! Messy Church Sunday 27 th May At School- 3.30pm to 5.00pm! All welcome! At Messy Church you can join in with a number of activities including art/crafts and songs, all around a relevant theme for the time of the year. Refreshments are provided and all are welcome! FOOD BANK - Collecting this week School continues to support the local community collection for Ashby Foodbank. Once again our baskets are out on the front playground and we invite you to make a small donation of non-perishable food or everyday provisions such as loo rolls, to help families in crisis. Remember, the St Mary's Church team will transport any donations to the Ashby Foodbank. Coffee time Friday 25 th May 2.30pm ALL welcome to join coffee (or tea!) time Please feel welcome to come along a bit earlier on Friday afternoon and meet with me, and other parents and friends of the school! It gives an opportunity to meet up and also to talk about school and share any ideas of what you would like to see in the future. Forum: This time I will be sharing feedback received from the Parent & Carer Questionnaire and from the Pupil Survey. Any time from 2.30pm is fine. Toddlers and baby children welcome too! Mrs Leadbeater Many thanks for your help! Science Fair Key Stage 2 Years 3,4,5,6 organised by Mrs North- Science Subject Leader We feel so proud of the children s efforts when we see the high standard of work produced as they research a scientist of their choice, and give reasons they are famous. They not only compile written fact sheets, but also give us interactive experiences to really bring things home. This year, we had parents and carers visiting as well as Governors, and children shared their projects with them. Three KS2 science projects and their creators will represent the school at Ashby School, in June. They will present their work to a wide audience, including teachers and pupils from Ashby School, Ivanhoe College and other local primary schools.

3 British Values Royal Afternoon Thursday We showed respect for British Culture and for each other on Thursday. Children looked splendid on this non-uniform day - wearing red, white and blue colours of their choice. Visiting adults and children alike enjoyed a special school lunch to celebrate the forthcoming royal wedding. Entrants for the Food School Services Design a Tiara competition displayed their designs. Winners were announced and presented with prizes. Visiting adults enjoying lunch with their children Entrants for the Design a Tiara competition run by School Food Services Winners: Lucas KS2 and Tianey KS1 Afternoon of collaborative House activities Mrs Drummond led a fact-file-find-out about the forthcoming royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Children also learned about a number of other Royal relatives!

4 A House activity of kite making was lovely to watch with older children supporting the younger children and showing great teamwork. Kite flying outside was brilliant fun with the weather conditions just right for lift-off. The afternoon ended with a biscuit treat and a rousing rendition of God Save the Queen. Let s go fly a kite! Parents and Carers - Views Please remember you can also the school office at any time to share your views and ideas. s will be forwarded to me.
