1 ST JOSEPH S WOODBURN NEWSLETTER No September 2016 T F W E sjpwood@lism.catholic.edu.au Dear Families, This will be our last Newsletter for this term. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the staff and children for all the hard work and commitment that they have shown in this busy and, once again, most rewarding term. Thank you to the many parents who continually support the school with your involvement in so many different ways and in so many different areas at St Joseph s School. We appreciate your generosity in assisting us, for without your help we could not achieve the positive outcomes and partnership that are so important if a school is to run smoothly and efficiently. THANK YOU to all who continue to make St Joseph s School, Woodburn a safe environment that is rich in learning, and where students are challenged to do their best academically, spiritually, culturally, in sport and socially. It has been a long term, with many students and teachers succumbing to the many flus and viruses that have been circulating throughout the winter months. I would like to congratulate all students on their excellent behaviour this term and I wish both students and staff all the best for a well earned break to relax and refresh to commence Term 4 on Monday,10th October. WOODBURN RIVERSIDE FESTIVAL Saturday, 8 th October A last reminder that on Saturday,8 th October, Woodburn and surrounding communities will be celebrating the annual Riverside Festival. We have been invited to participate in these celebrations by performing an item and exhibiting a piece of art work. The theme of the festival this year is Water Skiing in Woodburn. The children have been offered the opportunity to do their own artwork at home. The artwork has been collected from the school. It can be still be delivered to the community hall up until Wednesday 5th October, The festival falls on the last weekend of the school holidays. I encourage our students to be part of our school group performing at approximately 1pm on this day. Students are asked to meet in the park at Woodburn at 12.45pm. Mrs Lowrey has been working with the students with two items to perform on the day. We do need as many students as possible to attend and represent our school at this important community celebration. This is a great way for our school to be involved in our local Woodburn Community. Looking forward to seeing you there. AN AMAZING WEEK 10! HIGHLIGHTS WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR: Our SRC for organising a terrific fundraiser to help people in our area! Our students for getting in the spirit of things for our bright and happy day today! Year 5 for a beautiful Mass last Friday. Our Class Parents for organising some great get-togethers last weekend! Our students and staff for a terrific Term 3 of learning and commitment. 2 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION MATTERS from Megan Boyd The Sunday Connection: God speaks to us in many ways, including through the Sunday Scripture readings - 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time - A major theme in the Gospel of Luke is the importance of the care of the poor in the life of discipleship. In the parable found in today's Gospel, Jesus contrasts the life of a rich man and the poor man, Lazarus, who lives in the shadow of the rich man and his wealth. Both die. Lazarus finds himself in heaven; the rich man not. Catholic Social Teaching and having a Catholic WorldView Catholic Social Teaching touches upon many different aspects of life, from the family to international development, how we think of those who are homeless to how we care for the environment, and from how we shop and consume to the rights of workers and the dignity of work. All the different areas that Catholic Social Teaching touches upon have developed from practical reflection on the realities of modern life in the light of the principles and themes of Catholic Social Teaching. Our Lismore Diocese is encouraging teachers to look at our Curriculum with a Catholic Worldview lens, to enable our students to build awareness and understanding so they may respond to our world with their head, heart and hands. Themes of Catholic Social Teaching: Number 2: Preferential Option for the Poor Preferential Option for the Poor What is Justice for the poor? Caring for the poor is everyone s responsibility. Preferential care should be shown to poor and vulnerable people, whose needs and rights are given special attention in God s eyes. At Caritas Australia, our programs aim to reach the poorest and most marginalised people, which often requires greater effort to reach more remote regions. During the holidays volunteer Altar Servers would be welcome at All Saints Woodburn at 5.30pm and St John s Evans Head at 7.30am Sunday mornings. 3 ST JOSEPH S EVENING OF POETRY AND PROSE In Week 1 of Term 4, Tuesday, 11 th October at 5:30 pm in the library a group of dedicated students in Years 3 to 6 will be reciting poetry that they have been learning as part of their Performance Poetry Assessment. These particular students have decided to extend themselves further and are preparing a performance piece to present to their fellow students in the afternoon and to parents in the evening. We are expecting a higher number of Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4) students to be involved, as many of the Stage 3 students (Years 5 & 6) are involved in working on a Norpa Creative Arts performance to be showcased later in the term. Moving into high school, where oral assessment is such a large part of the curriculum, it is a wonderful opportunity for these Stage 2 and Stage 3 students to gain skills and confidence in this area. 4 CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU A big congratulations to the Student Representative Council (SRC) for the organisation and running of our bright and happy day. Thank you to our students for dressing up in bright clothes and bringing in a gold coin donation for such a worthy cause. 5 SPORTS INFORMATION from Melissa Barnes Swim and Survive Program Sport during Term 4 for all K-6 students will follow the NSW Board of Studies Water Safety and Awareness Section. This Water Safety and Awareness program is NOT a learn to swim program but as the names suggests a water confidence program teaching survival skills in the water. The program will commence at Woodburn Pool on Thursday, 27 th October (Week 3 Term 4). This program cannot run without parental support. Parents offering to help should be prepared to get into the water. Times are: 12pm to 1pm Stage 1 1pm to 2pm Stage 2 2pm to 3pm Stage 3 and Kindergarten The cost is $3:00 per week. If you can help, please complete the cut off slip in this Newsletter and return to school by Friday, 14th October. It is strongly recommended that with summer approaching you enrol your child in swimming lessons at a local pool of they cannot swim so that they can be taught to swim by qualified instructors. St Joseph s Swimming Carnival St Joseph s Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 9 th De- cember at Evans Head Sport and Aquatic Centre. Students from Year 2 to Year 6 will be involved in this carnival. Kindergarten and Year 1 will remain at school on this day.
