March 29th, 2018 Issue 09 Assistant Principal s Report Well Done Award Winners March 26th, 2018 Here we are again at the end of Term 1 already! It seems to go quicker each year given that its always such an action packed term. Some of the highlights have included Wilson s Prom Camp for the Year 6 s, the Aquatic Ed Program, the Swimming Sports, Athletic Sports, Professional Practice Days, Planning Week and that s just to name a few! We hope that all our families, students, parents and staff enjoy a relaxing two weeks and a great Easter break. Don t forget to allow yourself some you time over the holidays, ensuring everyone feels well rested for the start of Term 2. Special Junior Assembly A reminder that today our Foundation to Year 2 students will celebrate the end of Term 1 with a special Junior Assembly at 2pm in the Gym. We invite all our families to join our junior students to celebrate. They will be presenting some artwork they have completed along with some songs they have been learning in Performing Arts. Early Finish Today A reminder that school will finish early today. Given that it is the last day of Term 1, students will be having a shorter lunch, followed by a quick emu parade around the school to ensure there s no litter left over the Easter Holidays, before being dismissed by their classroom teachers at 2.30pm. Our Easter Egg Raffle Again, a huge thank you to our generous families that donated towards our Easter Egg Raffle. Congratulations to all our winners, especially Kelly Quaife who won the BIG prize! There was certainly a lot of chocolate being handed out on Monday morning, so make sure it doesn t get eaten at once (and save some for me early next term)! (Continued on page 2)

2 Private Bag 1, Mine Road, Korumburra Telephone: Page 2 Assistant Principal s Report (Continued from page 1) School Council 2018 We held our annual AGM yesterday evening at School Council and we would like to congratulate and welcome to Melissa Mortimer and Megan McCraw as our two new Community Members for I know their input will be highly valued and we look forward to a great year ahead. Our School Values Upon reflection at the end of this term, it has been great to see so many of our students living our School Values both at school and in the community. There has been a huge amount of time and energy spent this term already (and over the last few years) around discussing the importance of Aiming High, Being Resilient, Being Responsible and Being Respectful. Students don t just know what these words mean, but they know what it looks like to model these values / behaviours both at school and in the community. We regularly discuss with students the fact that their community is an extension of our school and their attitudes and behaviours don t just stop when the school day ends. We really are proud of our students here at KPS, and also excited to be working with many of them around supporting and further developing their skills and understanding behind what it means to be a great individual! 3 Private Bag 1, Mine Road, Korumburra Telephone: Page 3 Term 1 Report from Korumburra Secondary College It has been a great start to the year at Korumburra Secondary College. Students have engaged in a variety of learning opportunities both in and beyond the classroom. In the Scientific field, Questacon came and ran a series of hands on activities through their road show, STEM Sisters promoted Science for Young women through a series of off campus workshops and BrainSTEM engaged many of our female learners with community scientists to work towards a real world challenge. Sport has also been a key feature beyond the classroom with our Swimming and Athletic sports taking place. We have gone on to have great success in the pool with some dynamic efforts from a range of young people in a variety of sporting disciplines on the field and in the pool. Inter school sport promoted Cricket and Volleyball and to support the success of our teams, these sports were a core focus in the PE program for term one. This year we launched our Like Minds program, a class of select 7-9 students who demonstrate a high level of learner dispositions based on our college values Respect, Resilience, Life Long Learner, Productive Member of the Community and Strive for Excellence. As part of the shared learning, this group of students has coordinated the catering for the opening of our new STEAM building at the college and is currently working with our Sport Coordinator to design School Run an initiative to get more students engaging in physical activity on our school grounds whilst socialising with peers and taking a mental break from the hustle and bustle of the school day. This work has connected with the Maths, Science and PE learning outcomes and we look forward to its launch in Term 2. The new STEAM building has been a great success with our Technology, Arts, Science and Year 12 students all embracing what this 21 st Century learning facility has to offer. Next term, Burra Foods will be running workshops with our Year 7 and 9 students focussing on Separation and Mixtures in Industry as well as the impact of contamination in an environment. Preparations are well underway for our Grade 5/6 Information Night that will be on Tuesday May 1 st, We invite all families from the local area to come along, take a tour and discover what new and exciting about Korumburra Secondary College for 2018 and beyond. It didn t seem to affect the performance of the students but it was certainly tricky for the recording table and the teacher s paperwork! Congratulations to all students who participated with enthusiasm and made the effort to get into the spirit of the day by dressing in their House colours! It was a wonderful demonstration of skill and determination from many but also perseverance, resilience and patience from others. It was also fantastic to see students celebrating in the success of their peers. It was really pleasing to see many parents and friends barracking hard for their child s team and wandering around the oval watching the events. Thank-you to the many parents and friends who volunteered their time to help at the various events. It is impossible to run a day like this without your help and your assistance was greatly appreciated. A special thank-you to David Gray who returned to run the High Jump event for us and Shorty Alger our ever-reliable starter. A big thank-you to the students of Korumburra Secondary College who came to help at the events and to Ange Croatto for her organisation to make this happen! Congratulations to Blue House on being the overall winner on the day. A Participation Shield was also presented to Blue House for having the highest percentage of students participating in the day s events. Congratulations to our two Year 6 boys Athletic Champions Cooper Quaife and Ryan Gwin and our Year 6 girl Athletic Champion Siena Lane. The coffee cart is a much appreciated feature at the athletic sports for the parents, as is the food that is made available for purchase! Thank you Ann-Marie and helpers in the canteen and also Frank Mileto in the coffee van. Finally thank-you to all the staff at KPS for helping to run such a great day and to Betty Hall and Helen Cripps who were at the recording table! The team for the up-coming Woorayl District Athletic Sports has been finalised and students who have qualified will get a note early next term. These sports will be held in Leongatha on Wednesday 2 nd May (Week 3 of Term 2).
