1 Thursday March 15, 2018 Sherbourne Primary Outlook Crescent, CONGRATULATIONS to Flynn Zipsin Year 4 in 3/4K who won the 50 metre backstroke event at the Regional swim finals yesterday. Flynn will now proceed to the State finals in April. An outstanding achievement Flynn! We are also very proud of Amelia Kibell, another Year 4 Sherbourne PS student who competed at this high level. UPCOMING EVENTS Wednesday March 21 SPS Cross Country P - 6 Thursday March 22 Whole School Brainstorm Productions Incursion STUDENT LED PROGRESS MEETINGS This week Student led progress meetings were held across the school with an excellent participation rate- we were thrilled so many families made the most of this opportunity to share their child s progress to date and their goals forward. Unfortunately, 3/4E and 3/4K and Japanese progress meetings had to be postponed. These teachers will advise their classes of the alternate arrangements. 2 SCHOOL COUNCIL 2018 RESULTS Thank you and welcome to new School Councillors for the period March 2018-March The number of nominations received matched the number of Parent non DET vacancies so no election will be necessary. Welcome to new members Jane Young and Nadine Hamilton and welcome back to continuing councillors, Jennie Webb and Hollie Spirovski. The new DET members are Carolyn Kyte and Anna Lloyd. Thank you for your nominations, we look forward to working with our new Council. The next School Council meeting is Wednesday March 21 at 7.30pm SUB COMMITTEES Parents and community members are also invited to join us as part of a School Council sub committee We have five sub committees who meet once a month: a) FINANCE SUB COMMITTEE looks at the school finances, sets budget, monitors income and expenditure for the school. Looks at program budgets and reports each month. Make recommendations re the setting of various fees for the year. 2 nd Wednesday of each month 7.00pm at school b) EDUCATION look at policy, parent forums, communication, educational issues, programs at the school 2nd Wednesday of each month 7.30pm at school c) BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS look at grounds and maintenance of the school, co-ordinates working bees, school grounds plan. 1 st or 2 nd Monday monthly 6.30pm at school d) PARENT AND FRIENDS fundraising and social events. Last year the Parents and Friends group raised money for the completion of many wonderful projects around the school including fabulous new signage at both entries of the school, gymnasium wall painting, the purchase of new take home readers across the school as well as the purchase of many new library books. There are many exciting plans afoot for 2018 activities and targets. 1st Tuesday of each month 7.00pm at school PUBLICITY AND MARKETING looks at promoting the school and establishing relationships with our preschools, Child Care centres and the wider community. No expertise needed to join any of these groups we would welcome your involvement. Please contact me or the office if you are interested in participating. Page 2

3 WORKING BEE We held a very exciting, action packed working bee after school on Friday March 2. The work completed really showcases the beautiful environment we are so lucky to live in. Many thanks to the following families for their great efforts: Dimmack, Halley, Tregenza, Molloy, Negron, Whyte, Hutchinson, Young, Lamont, Hackart, Coulter, Goodwin and Don. Huge thanks to organisers Jane and Don. Great work, we were so proud to show off our beautiful school on Open evening! SPS CROSS COUNTRY Wed March 21 Blair Reserve Our school Cross country is a very special annual Sherbourne event. Students will depart from school walking to Blair reserve just after 9.00am. We encourage students to wear their House colours Freeman Red, Lewis green, Perkins yellow and Moneghetti blue. Students must wear a hat and carry their drink bottle and some snacks with them. Students requiring asthma medication or other medication MUST carry it with them to Blair Reserve. There is a First Aid officer on site. Students may wish to bring a small back pack. We commence with the Junior school races Preps run 1 lap, Year 1s run 2 laps and Year 2s run 3 laps of the oval course. Year 3-6s run the 1 km track which involves running beyond the oval, up the hill behind the footy oval and back around the kindergarten. We need lots of parent helpers to make this course safe and supervised. The Prep -2 students stay to watch the running of the Year 3 race before walking back to school. We will also require parents to walk with the classes to and from school. They will return in time for lunch. It promises to be a fabulous morning. NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE Sherbourne PS is registered for this important opportunity to continue planning how we will take positive action to stamp out all forms of bullying and violence. Conversations will take place at an appropriate level with students to discuss how they can make a real difference and work together to create a world free of bullying and violence. These conversations are the building blocks of a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for all. Next Thursday Brainstorm productions visit our school. The Buddies show is an exciting adventure that gives students clear strategies for making and maintaining friendships and being safe on the internet. It encourages children to express their feelings in a safe way, use kind words, seek help and never give their details or talk to strangers online. P-2 SWIMMING Please note there will be NO Year 1/2 swimming session next Thursday March 22 due to our visiting performance group. The final session for 1/2M and D for Term 1 will be held on the final morning of the term, Thursday March 29. A big thank you to the small band of parents who have assisted with this program and of course to our lovely teacher Vicki. In Term 2 Prep L will swim each Thursday for 7 weeks commencing at 9.15am in the first week of term 2, on Thursday April 19, concluding on Thursday May 31. Anna will distribute details shortly and will be looking for lots of parent helpers to assist with collecting and returning groups of students to the pool, dressing, drying, tying shoe laces and brushing hair. The session will run for 9.15am 10.30am. Page 3

4 JUNIOR SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS On Tuesday March 27 Junior School Council have decided to run a TWINS DAY where students are encouraged to team up with a friend and dress in similar clothes. They can dress in normal casual gear or dress up as sports persons, Disney princesses, Easter theme, and lots more. Teachers will assist Junior school students to match up triplets are okay too! Money raised through the gold coin donation, we are hoping to donate to the Royal Children s Hospital. The other Junior School Council project in each class is collecting plastic bottle tops and caps so we can create a giant whole school mural. Please collect and send in to your classroom. Thank you. Our next whole school Assembly will be next Monday March 19 at 3.00pm in the Hall. COLES SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS VOUCHERS A big thank you to family and friends for your great efforts in collecting Coles Sports for Schools vouchers. Keep up the great work! There is a collection bin at the Eltham and Greensborough Coles stores as well as in the office at school. Well done! SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY The internet and social media provide great opportunities for us to network and stay in touch online. While these technologies can offer a positive space for sharing information and ideas, they also have the potential to cause harm to individuals, groups or even whole communities. Just as you would discourage your child from acting inappropriately online, it s important to remember that sometimes, negative comments posted about a school community by parents or caregivers can have a bigger impact than expected. Reputations of staff, schools and even parents can be damaged. Whenever you re online, you are potentially speaking to an unlimited audience, even if you think your conversations are private. Taking a few moments to think about the content you post could save upset, embarrassment - and even possible legal action or police involvement. Parental and community feedback is important for schools. If you have a concern, complaint or enquiry about an issue at school, the best approach is to speak directly to us, rather than discussing it in a public forum. If you are worried about online content involving the school community, contact the principal. If you are posting online, remember that your comments help build and support the school community. Make sure you re honest, respectful, considerate - and a good role model for your children. 5 INTERSCHOOL SPORTS REPORT On Friday 2 nd March we played sport against Montmorency South Primary School. Bat Tennis: The Mixed Bat Tennis team today we played Montmorency South, we played a home game. The score was 5-36 their way. The highlight was that everybody played a fun and fair game, also everybody was encouraging and supporting. The sports awards went to Sarah and Sean. Basketball: The boys basketball team had a great game against Monty South, It was really close but they got away from us in the end. The scores were The highlight was that everyone played well and we played as a team. Everyone had equal court time. The sports award went to Harley for his excellent work in defence. Girls Basketball Monty South had a really good girls team and they won 8 8. The highlight was that we all tried our hardest and played well. Some people dribbled the ball for the first time in this game. Olivia got the sports award for trying her best and dribbling down the court for the first time. Volleyball The boys volleyball team had some great rallies against Montmorency South. Monty South won 2 0. The highlights were that everyone was supportive of each other. The award went to Brayden because he was a good sport. In the girls games we lost 2-0, Monty South were a very strong team. The highlight was that we had good games and we got a lot of digs. The sports award went to Summer this week. Softball In the girls game the highlight was that everyone showed great sportsmanship. The scores were 4 1 their way. It was a very low scoring game. The award went to Eden because she showed great sportsmanship. Boys softball played well against Monty South and everyone tried their best. Thank you to Clara who filled in for us this week when we did not have enough players. The award went to Jacob because he showed respect to the other team when they were batting. The scores were Cricket The girls cricket team played really well against Monty South and we won The highlight was that we got 9 wickets, most of them were run outs. There was some great batting by everyone too. The sports award went to Jessica because she was cheering for the other team when they did something good and encouraging our team too. The boys cricket team lost to Monty South We played pretty well and the highlight was Orlando s one handed catch. The sports award went to James because he played really well and displayed a positive approach. Page 5
