The discussions were based around our forthcoming TED project Journey and will culminate in a special House Event on the last day of term. Your children are working very hard to gain as many House points as possible and their helpful, kind and polite behaviour continues to be much in evidence. Tuesday saw our pupils continue to be unaffected by the cold and enjoying playing outside in the crisp fresh air. We all enjoyed seeing our older pupils work on their netball skills before the bell rang at 8.25am. On Wednesday, Mrs Robey and I attended a meeting for IAPS headteachers and Chairs of Governors. We heard speakers share their expertise on the importance of healthy eating, new initiatives in teacher recruitment and 11+ assessments. The last speaker was Durell Barnes who is the Chair of ISEB (Independent Schools Examinations Board). ISEB produce many curricular and assessment materials for both 11+ and 13+. Our discussion explored the 11+ consortia assessments this year and how parents can best support their children through the process. I am going to be discussing these issues and working with Mr Barnes further as ISEB intend to produce some guidance for parents on 11+ transfer. On Thursday afternoon I attended the termly meeting of the St Marylebone School Teaching Alliance. Many headteachers from special, primary and secondary schools attended. We discussed the latest initiatives in initial teacher training, courses and professional development for pupils and staff that are available at St Marylebone School, staff wellbeing initiatives and recent OFSTED research papers. OFSTED and our own ISI inspection systems are becoming increasingly similar. Friday s assembly was led by Class 3L who shared their incredible knowledge of the Romans in a highly polished and accomplished assembly performance. We were astounded by their acting and performance skills and so very proud of their learning and their presentation. As usual this class assembly was followed by the announcement of our weekly House Point totals and celebration of those in the Golden Book. Friday also saw our intrepid Year 2 pupils brave the elements for a day long trip to the Camden Learning Centre where they extended their computing skills. 1

2 Many of our Year Six pupils have continued to be busy with interviews at senior schools. The headteachers who I have been in contact with have been universally impressed by our Cavendish pupils. They have been described as accomplished, polite, interesting and engaging. They have combined their exemplary focus on learning with 11+ preparation as well as being wonderful role models for our younger pupils. They deserve the best possible outcomes from their 11+ examinations and assessments to senior schools. We are very proud of them and all our other pupils. While an individual dog may be well-behaved on its own, in the presence of children and other dogs, its behaviour may be erratic and we would hate an accident to befall one of our pupils. We receive complaints from our neighbours on this and we wish to maintain good relationships with them. Year 3 will be running a cake sale on Friday 8th January after school in aid of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). They would be very grateful for the support of other year groups with traybakes, cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other items. You can also bake something that will be sold as a whole cake - this is especially popular with the teachers and other staff of the school. It is always good if we can offer a few 'free-from' items i.e. eggs, gluten so that children with various allergies can still participate. The entire sale is nut-free. Please list all ingredients with your bake remembering no nuts or nut extract, and if you are sending it in a tin that you would like to have back, please put your child's name and class on it. You can drop off your bakes any time on Friday 8th February to the office. 5 In Nursery we have been reading about the little red hen who made some bread. Today we learned to bake some bread rolls ourselves. There was lots of mixing and kneading! 5

7 Congratulation to the selection of Year 5 football teams who played against St Mary & St Pancras School that kindly invited us to use their facilities. Girls played two games that ended up with a win and a draw. Well done for their resilience and determination in competing in both matches in such unfavourable weather condition. The school wish you best of lack for future fixtures. Your effort is gladly appreciated. 7

8 Scientists of the Week Ines (3L), Lucia (3R), O Daara (4E), Honor (4L), Sophie SB (5M) Zoe (5S), Valery (6P), Chiara (6W) The Eye Hero workshop was so fun! Two students from UCL medical school came and talked to us about eye health and what we can do to become eye heroes. They showed us all about the parts of the eye. They also told us lots of facts. One of them was 2,000,000 people in the UK are blind, but 1,000,000 of them could have been prevented if they went to the optician. We got a certificate at the end of the day. I really enjoyed it! Julia 5M We had some doctors come in from UCL. They came to talk to us about the eye. They helped us learn lots of things and told us some facts. One of the facts was that you should go to the opticians at least every two years. Another fact was that if you asked an adult what sense they fear losing most, they would probably say their sight. Although they say that, some adults don t actually go to the opticians very often. Did you know 2,000,000 people go blind in the UK? But 1,000,000 people could have prevented it by going to the opticians more often. We really enjoyed it! Milla and Lila 5M 8
