It is a busy time, but a time of great joy as we reflect on the journey that students have undertaken and the progress they have made. Twice a year, schools are required to quantify student progress, by giving grades determined on a five point scale. Eventually, all the hard work seems to come down to a letter grade on a piece of paper. But we all know that our students are so much more than just grades. When you read your child s report at the end of the term, please take the time to read the comments that teachers have written, giving context to the grades given. You will know, as we do, that the effort required by some students just to pass, is enormous, while for others, passing is easy. God has made us each as individuals, created in his image and with his thumbprint upon us. We have different gifts, talents, dreams and goals and as a community, we celebrate this uniqueness. We seek to have every student understand and develop the unique combination of gifts and talents that they have been given; to use their gifts and talents in service to one another and in worship to our mighty God. I encourage you to talk through your child s report with them, and together explore their strengths and challenges. This upcoming half-way point of the year is a great time to take stock and set goals for learning and growing. 3 PRIMARY NEWS Year 6 Canberra Camp Year Six students recently made the long bus trip to our National capital, undertaking an education tour of the many significant sites in Canberra. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs, with a focus on Australia s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Year Six students, teachers and four enthusiastic parents were kept very busy visiting, to name a few, The National War Memorial, Old and New Parliament House, Questacon, National Gallery, Electoral Education Centre, Australian Institute of Sport, Geo-Science Education Centre and The Mint. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education, and as such make a contribution to the cost of undertaking this informative and fun camp. Primary Out of Uniform Day - Starter Pack Project An out of uniform day has been organised for Thursday the 21 st of June for all students in Prep to Year 6. Instead of a gold coin donation we ask students to bring in a small item for the starter packs. The Starter Pack Project initiative is a component of the Year 6 PYP unit contributions to the community. More information will follow on the list of items your child can bring. 4 PRIMARY SPORT Hot Shots Tennis Clinic The year 3-6 students have completed their three week Hot Shots Tennis Clinic in Physical Education this week. The sessions were run by Ben from Topline Tennis, Eltham and some fortunate students have even received free coaching vouchers. Hot Shots Tennis is a modified game, with lighter rackets and larger tennis balls. This has allowed all students to participate, experience success rallying the ball and have fun! Division Cross Country On Wednesday 13th June four of our year 3-6 students represented our school at the Division Cross Country, Bundoora Park. They qualified for the race when they competed at the District Cross Country, two weeks prior. A massive congratulations to all of them and if they finished in the top 12, they will compete at Regional Cross Country on Wednesday 20th June! The team has been selected from the House Athletics carnival. If selected, parents should have received an , outlining training details and which events their child will be competing in. Please meet at Ms Park s office on Wednesday and Friday lunchtime, starting next week. If students are not already in P.E uniform they can get changed into it at the start of lunch. Swimming Program The Year Prep-2 students will be starting their Swimming Program next term at YMCA, Epping. This is a very exciting and important part of the Physical Education curriculum. The students will be learning about water safety and swimming techniques. Many parent helpers are required for this to run effectively, please respond to the online Ed Smart paperwork if you are available. Parent Helpers will be contacted via before the end of term. It is only a week until the students in the two Mission Awareness Tour head off to Vanuatu and Thailand. The two teams have not only been busy preparing English lessons, Sunday School activities and crafts for the children they will be interacting with, but they have also been active organising a week of fundraisers for the primary and secondary school to raise money for the children they will be visiting and ministries they will be working with. On Tuesday they prepared many amazing treats for the Baked Sweets Sale (and thank you to the many amazing parents who helped) and on Friday, June 15th they are gearing up for the return of the one-andonly Souvlaki Day. On Friday, June 15th secondary students have the opportunity to contribute to the fundraiser by donating a gold coin for the freedom of being able to come to school out of uniform and at lunchtime they will be welcome to come to the gym at lunchtime to get one of the worldfamously delicious chicken souvlakis.
