1 APS Newsletter From Ms Blundell Issue 16 29th August, 2018 It s amazing how quickly the term is flying by and how busy school life is. Over the last fortnight we have had budding scientists presenting experiments and science ideas at Science Slam. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and the complexity of thinking demonstrated by the students who were ably assisted by their lab technicians (parents). Overall it was a wonderful demonstration of the Science program operating in the school. Following that we had a number of selected students competing in the DDSA cross country. The students were fantastic and did themselves and the school proud. Armadale came second overall out of six schools. Finally we had the sensational performance at One Big Voice. What an event this turned out to be with a fantastic performance from our choir who not only sang beautifully but also looked spectacular in their new choir shirts. This is an event that students, parents and staff will remember for a lifetime. You would think that with all the busyness we would be settling into a quiet run home, but no. Tonight we have the Parent Open Night from 5 7pm, the Book Week Parade will be starting tomorrow at 8.55am and on Friday our senior choir will be attending Senior Dale Fest. We look forward to seeing lots of parents and family members at these events. Following on from that we will be holding the P&C disco on Friday 7 September. The P&C will also be having a meeting on Tuesday night starting at 7pm in the staff room. So lots of events still to come. We still seem to be having issues with people parking in the ACROD bays without an ACROD permit or a school permit. This is causing problems for a number of people who have done the right thing and obtained a permit from the school for various reasons. To tighten up on this we are moving to a school parking permit that will change colour each term and will only be issued in exceptional circumstances. In order to obtain a permit you will need to provide some evidence as to why it is required. If you require a parking permit for Term 4 please come into the front office. Each permit will only be valid for a term of issue and if it is required for a longer period of time you will need to re-apply at the end of each term. 2 Science Slam! 2018 Looking Through the Eyes of Science What a night it was! Children, parents (and uncles) sharing their special Science ideas with enthusiasm and polish. Many thanks to all the parent helpers who supported their children with this wonderful evening. Though there were so many exciting presentations, I still have a memory in my mind of 8 (yes 8!) students standing on a board supported by only 3 balloons. Aah the wonders of physics! There will be a compilation of photos from the night available for students if they bring a thumb drive. Please note that these photos will be for personal memories only and are not to be shared on social media. Science week activities Thank you to the wonderful Year 6 students who helped with the lunchtime activities. Students were able to make a mini catapult, build a newspaper arch in the block 2 walkway, have a guess with What s in the box? or take part in a Science scavenger hunt around the school grounds. The guessing competition was won (equally) by Sienna Tingwell and Paige Linton in Year 5. Kanyana fundraiser A team of enthusiastic Year 5 students ran a stall before school and at lunchtime during Science week with all funds going to Kanyana Wildlife Centre for injured and displaced native animals. They also sold tickets to the afterschool SCINEMA science movies a new event for National Science week. They are to be commended for raising over $400!!! Thank you too, the school community, for supporting the team. The popcorn challenge was won by Aiden Clarke in Year 3. From memory, there were 473 pieces of popcorn. I am arranging a visit to Kanyana with the team to deliver the money and the students will also be shown around the centre to see where their funds will be used. Science Talent Search- Chloe Friedlos and Antonia Dobson entered a project about the effectiveness of different wraps and containers for school lunches with the idea that we should be looking at ways of reducing single use plastic and wraps. They had students blind test sandwiches which had been wrapped in different ways and also looked at the cost effectiveness of each wrap or re-suable item. They will be presenting their results in the school newsletter in future and it may surprise you! The girls attended Curtin University to be interviewed about their project as well as submit their final report for judging. We await the results of the STS in the next couple of weeks. 3 POWER OUTAGE We have been advised by Western Power that there is to be a power outage in this area on Wednesday 5th September Whilst school will continue to run as scheduled, the canteen is unable to provide hot lunches on this day. Senior Choir: Music Notes - Week 5 Term 3 One Big Voice was AMAZING! What an experience for our students. They sang will so much energy and focused so brilliantly. We were all so proud to be involved. Senior Dale Fest is on this Friday 31 st August. It s a busy couple of weeks for our choir! We will go to the Kelmscott Hall in the morning to sing an item song for the combined schools and audience, as well as join in with community singing. The performance will start at 10am and audience members are most welcome (with a gold coin donation that helps to fund the event). Ukulele Club: Ukulele Club is ongoing and this is a reminder that even if you forget your own ukulele to still come along, as we have spares at school to borrow. If we are going to perform at the Music Concert next term we will need everyone to come regularly so we are all ready. Year 4 Recorder: Year Four students will receive a note home about the recorder program this week. Recorders will be available to purchase through the school (a quality Yamaha instrument) as the school does a bulk purchase for this purpose. All the information in on the note. 4 2018 DDSA Cross Country Friday 17 th August - What a day! A group of our best long-distance runners made the trip up the hill to Roleystone CC for the 2018 DDSA Cross-Country Carnival. We were given perfect condi+ons for a cross-country carnival and the students all enjoyed a great day represen+ng the red and blue! Our students were, as always great ambassadors of their school and all gave their personal best in their event. Our parents were a great support to both the students and Mr Moir and this was greatly appreciated. Well done to all of our par+cipants! 5 P&C and Community News P&C Uniform Shop Open Days Term 3 Fri 7th September 8:00-8:30 Wed19th September 2:00-2:45 At all other times, you may complete an order form and, with payment, place it in the P&C blue box behind the Deputies' Office, where it will be filled and passed onto your child s class teacher. Please be reminded that payments to the P&C are cash or cheque only. Our uniform shop is staffed by parent helpers, if you are able to assist at any of the open days, please contact Melinda Linton via the shop. All assistance is appreciated. P & C FUNDRAISING UPDATES ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS There are still 5 families at the school that haven't returned or paid for the Entertainment Books. We ask that you please return your book or payment to the office IMMEDIATELY, so that we may finalise this fundraiser. Payment can be made by cash or credit card. Entertainment Books can still be purchased to support the school, you just need to go to the link below to order them. Please remember to let your family and friends know they too can still purchase the book, or the digital version through our school. FATHERS DAY STALL This years Father s Day stall will before and after school on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st August, in the Undercover Area. Everything is priced under $10, with quite a few items s at only $2. There will be something for everyone s budget! Stock is limited so get in early to avoid disappointment! Faction Athletics Carnival A reminder that the Faction Athletics Carnival is on Friday 14th September keep your eyes open for information coming out soon for the fundraising activities we have planned for that day. 6 P&C and Community News cont. TERM 3 CRAZY HAIR DISCO The P&C Term 3 Disco is happening on Friday 7th September in the Undercover Area. Come along with your crazy hair! There will be prizes given to the kids with the craziest hair! JUNIOR DISCO FOR KINDY - YEAR 3 5pm pm SENIOR DISCO FOR YEAR 4 - YEAR 6 7pm - 9pm TICKETS ON SALE AT THE DOOR $5 each Hot Dogs will be on sale at the Junior Disco only for $3.00 each Glow products and yummy treats will be on sale at the Canteen! More info will be sent out with students next week.

7 P&C and Community News cont. Armadale Library are hosting several Story Dogs for primary school aged students to read to. This event is being held after school for the Australian Reading Hour - On Thursday, September 20, 2018, stop what you re doing for one hour and pick up a book. We want Australians to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading. Take the time to learn, grow, escape and relax. In children, reading has been shown to help with identity formation, setting them up for success in the future. In adults, reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea. We have 30 places available for students to visit the library and read to a dog.
