1 237 SPRING ST, RESERVOIR Website: Event Monday 20th August BOOK WEEK Monday 20th August Year 5 visit to Kookaburra for Book Week Tuesday 21st August Book Week Parade Milk & Cookie Morning Tea Wednesday 22nd August Year 5 visit to Kookaburra Kinder for Book Week Time Address:principal@sgreservoir.catholic.edu.au TERM 3 Monday August 20th 2018 Date Ph: Newsletter No: 3.06 Dear Lord, Bless the week ahead. May its challenges not overwhelm us, Circumstances not discourage us, and in all things may we remember you are with us in our journeying, your love our fuel, your word our guide, today and always. Amen Dear Parents, Students and Staff, Thursday 23rd August Hooptime (Senior School) Tuesday 28th August Junior L Assembly 2.45pm Father s Day Breakfast 7.30am Father s Day Stall & Raffle Tuesday 4th September School Board Meeting Thursday 6th September Middle School Mass St Gabriel s Primary School is a busy place. There is always something exciting happening around here. From Sporting events, to excursion days, to events in our Church, and even an Arts Festival. And on top of all this, our amazing children are busy with learning and forging lifelong friendships. This week is Book Week. Book Week is the longest running children s festival in Australia. In its 72nd consecutive year, Book Week highlights the importance of reading by celebrating Australian authors and illustrators. Our Book Week celebrations kick off this year with our Character Parade tomorrow morning. This will be followed by students working in their house teams to explore the shortlisted books and complete an activity. I would like to thank all the staff who have worked hard to plan a jam-packed day of literary celebration. Year 5 visit to Montessori for Book Week Friday 24th August Friday 31st August 9am 11am 7pm 9am In thinking about book week this week, I am called to reflect on the importance of words. Words matter. Words are important. We use words to communicate with our friends and family. We use our words in our work and in the world. We use words to talk to our children. People use words to convince us what to buy or what to think. Words are a huge part of every aspect of our lives. The average person says about 16,000 words a day. That s 112,000 words every week. That s over five million words every year. Words have the power to help others, to share with others to tell others how much we love and appreciate them. As busy people we use words to organise, to do what is next and for administration. It is important to use our words to share love, kindness and care. Words to make people laugh, to encourage or to support. Considering how many words people use, how many of those are positive and thoughtful?

2 Many people are compelled to give voice to any passing feeling, thought or impression they have. Some people say what is on their mind without regard to the significance of what they are saying. Every phrase or conversation has an intended message, often what we also say may have an unintended message. Words have great power to affect the hearts and minds of those who hear them. They must be used with care and thought. We talk to our children often about using words to solve problems, to ask questions and to interact positively with others. Using words is a skill that we must encourage our children to develop. We need to teach our children to take a few moments to think about what they will say and how they will say it. We also need them to think about the impact it will have on the listener. Children need to see the adults around them using words carefully, thoughtfully and in a range of ways. We need to explicitly teach our children that words are powerful and they can change everything. "Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless." -Mother Teresa Please take the time to check out everything that is happening around our school, and remember to look at the School App Calendar which has been updated and has regular updates of dates and events. Have a great week. M M Playground After School Currently, students are allowed to be on the playground equipment after school ONLY if they are under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian/carer. During this time, classroom teachers are waiting with their students while they are collected and ONE other member of staff is officially on duty till 3:40pm. The staff member on duty cannot provide the level of supervision required for students on the playground equipment while watching the remainder of the yard. The primary function of this staff member is to ensure that students are collected safely by a parent/guardian/carer. Students playing on the equipment from 3:30-3:40pm are not the responsibility of the school staff. If your child is on the playground equipment from 3:30-3:40pm they are your responsibility and must be directly supervised by a parent/guardian/carer who is present. Students are able to remain after this time, 3:40pm, but are the responsibility of the parent/guardian/carer. At St Gabriel s, we greatly value community engagement and the use of the playground equipment is an opportunity for families to gather and connect. However, for this to continue we need parents/guardians/carers to provide strict supervision during this time to minimise the safety risks to the students. We need families to closely monitor that ONLY children who are closely supervised can be on the playground equipment after school.. Thank you for your assistance. Last week some lucky families received the 2018 School Improvement Parent Survey which we hope will be completed either online or via the questionnaire, to give us a better idea of how we do things at St Gabriel s School. We believe that our parent voice is so important in helping us shape the ongoing improvement of our school. The completion of the survey is an opportunity for you to tell us what you think is going well and maybe not so well at our school. The main aim of the survey is to identify factors that contribute to the organisational health of St Gabriel s School, and to shape the future development of our school.

3 RE News. Praying as a family. It has always impressed me how beautifully reverent our children at St Gabriel s are when they pray. Whether we are in the church, gathered in the Assembly Area or hall or in our classrooms, Jesus is welcomed fully into our hearts and minds. As a family, please consider taking a moment to pray together it takes no effort and is truly a beautiful time to spend in rich family connectedness. Daily Prayer: together God, thank You for this day! Thank You for the birds and the animals, the flowers and the trees, the lakes and the streams, and the sun that rises and sets over them each day. Thank You for creating everything we see! Thank You for the life we live, and for making each person different. Thank You for Jesus, who died for us so that we can go to heaven one day just for believing in Him. What an amazing God You are! In Jesus Name, Amen. Prayer at mealtime: Thankyou God for this food, For rest and home and all things good. For wind and rain and the sun above But most of all for those we love. Amen
