Father s Day Breakfast & Footy Colours, Friday, 31st August TOURNAMENT OF MINDS WIN FOR ASHTONFIELD PS On Sunday the 26 th of August, the Ashtonfield Public School Adventurers attended their first ever TOURNAMENT OF MINDS! We had decided to present the STEM Dear Challenge parents, known as the Incredible Find! We had started the journey on the 25 th of July, 2018! There were a total of fifteen other teams doing the same challenge. Tournament of minds is about problem solving in a weird, fun, and curious way. We had created a mixture of a frog, a spider and a snake. It was known as the Repamphibiac, or more commonly known as the Mottled Reptilian Spider. It was found in the Daintree Rainforest, in a meteor crater. We had worked hard for five difficult weeks to overcome a spontaneous challenge and our long term challenge. But the big news was, WE WON and beat all other fifteen schools. Now we are going to the NSW state final on the 9 th of September to represent the Hunter Region. Wish us luck! Written by Liam P. and Josh A. Thank you. BASKETBALL This season the Ashtonfield Girls Basketball team progressed to the 5th round. Unfortunately the team went down to a very strong Taree West side. The girls played a great game, never giving up and displaying good sportsmanship. The girls are proud of their achievement and should be congratulated.
3 PAGE 3 GUMNUT NEWS WEEK 6, TERM 3 Library News Premier s Reading Challenge There is only one week remaining till this year s NSW Premier s Reading Challenge closes on Friday, 31st August. The Year 4 students particularly have been very enthusiastic in ensuring that they have completed the Challenge, with a very close race between 4S, 4R and 4B to determine which class will be the first to have all of their students complete the Challenge and win the pizza lunch. Year 3 classes are also very competitive with so many students reading books to get their Challenge complete. Well done to all those students who have completed their Challenge. Remember to keep on reading as according to Dr Seuss; The more you read, the more you know. Book Week This week we are celebrating Book Week and reading at our school. The theme for this year s Children s Book Week is Find Your Treasure in Books. Book Week is a major annual event for our Library complete with a Book Character Parade, a number of competitions for the students and a Book Fair. Tomorrow, Tuesday 28 th August, parents and friends are invited to bring a picnic lunch to share with their family at 11.00am. When lunch time ends at 11.35am parents and friends can move to the basketball to take up your position to watch the students as they take part in the Book Character Parade. The Parade will commence at approximately 11.45am with children moving in their classes from the COLA area down to the basketball court. It will be lots of fun seeing the creative costumes. Throughout the day the school s annual Book Fair will open for viewing and purchases in the Library. Parents, families and students are invited to come in and have a look. All profits from any purchases made at the Book Fair go directly to the library to get new books and resources throughout the year. Opening times will be from 8.30am to 9.30am, then from 10.45am to 11.40am, after the parade until 2.00pm and then a final time from 2.30pm till 3.15pm. Entries in the colouring competitions and Design a Treasure Map competition will be also on display in the Library, so please drop in and have a look. Throughout this week there will be literary treasure hunts in the library as well as a guessing competition to win a jar of pirate loot! It is a very exciting week for the library and our school and we look forward to all of our students getting involved. Students from the junior school will be attending a Book Week performance in the Hall on Thursday 30 th August. This performance is put on by the Maitland City Library Roadshow and is based on some of this year s Children s Book Council of Australia s Shortlisted Picture books that the students have been studying in their Library lessons this term. This performance will be subsidised by the school and is at no cost for our students. There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates' loot on Treasure Island and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life. Walt Disney Debating News Last Tuesday, 21 st August the Year 6 debating team, the Archers, took part in Round 5 of the NSW Premier s Debating Challenge against a team from Metford Public School. Topic for the debate was that we should ban contact sports for people under 18. Despite losing the toss and for the first time this season, taking on the role of the Negative side, the Archers were able to put forward some excellent points, strong rebuttals and win the debate. Congratulations to Wil, Jayden, Scarlet and Jake. This win has placed the Archers as outright winners of our zone but also unfortunately means that our year 5 team, the Arrows, now bow out of this year s competition. We look forward to seeing the Arrows in action again in Well done Liam, Imogen, Keilee and Dion for an excellent first year of debating! The Archers will now move on to take part in the first round of knockout finals with a debate against the team from Nulkaba Public school next week.

You do not have to be there for the whole time. If you can only spare an hour, it would be very much appreciated. Please message Jen on or comment on the Ashtonfield Public School P&C Facebook page if you are available. (This is a great way to help your kids get Dad exactly what he wants)! Sadly, due to time constraints, we will not be holding a Father s Day raffle this year. Canteen Unfortunately due to lack of volunteers and our canteen supervisor now unavailable, the canteen is currently closed until further notice. The canteen is run entirely on volunteers and the role of canteen supervisor is not a paid position. This has been a matter that has been discussed at previous P&C meetings and is again on our agenda for discussion at our next P&C meeting on Tuesday 21 August. New members are very welcome. Uniform Shop News The Uniform Shop is open every Tuesday, 8.30am 9am and 2.30pm 3pm and every Thursday, 8.30am 9am. EFTPos facilities are available at the Uniform Shop.
