1 John J. Mitchell February 26, 2018 CRISIS DRILL On February 22, IHM Conducted a Lock Down Crisis Drill. The Drill lasted approximately 20 minutes. Students of all grade levels were cooperative and followed all precautions. This drill merely reviewed Lock Down procedures and did not include an evacuation. A future Drill will include that phase. The Drill and Procedures were reviewed in detail with Faculty and Parish Administrators. ANSWER TO A PRAYER WINNER Congratulations to Kristen Rosato, the February winner of IHM's Answer to a Prayer raffle $500 prize. Our final drawing will be held at the HSA's Open Meeting on Wednesday, March 14th in the Lower Hall, start time 7 pm. The Beau Biden Foundation will be in to give an adult presentation on Cyber Safety that evening. The grand prize is $5,000 or $5,000 toward one student's tuition. There are still plenty of tickets left, so purchase yours now. Flyer are available and you may also link to pay pal at the bottom of the school web page. ADDED TAG DAY FRIDAY, MARCH 2ND Students may bring in a dollar for a dress down day (handbook appropriate) benefiting the Beau Biden Foundation who will be presenting a Cyber Safety Session for adults on March 14th at 7 pm in the Lower Hall. 1

2 TO JESUS THROUGH MARY To Jesus through Mary February Focus Sorrowful Mysteries February Virtue of the Month Faithfulness As we look to a new month beginning next week, we continue to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary. However, we undertake a new virtue for March, namely, mercy. In the prayer Hail, Holy Queen, we turn to Mary as our Mother of Mercy. The term, mercy, encompasses so much in our understanding of it. It is both forgiveness and reconciliation. It calls us to live justly so that true peace (wholeness or balance) is restored to all. Mercy reminds us that we need to care for both the spiritual and temporal needs of others. Mercy is spoken of twice in the Magnificat, the great prayer of Mary, telling of God s remembrance of God s people. Mercy is woven intricately throughout the lives of Mary and Jesus. So how does mercy connect with us? In this second week of Lent, let us pause and ponder how mercy continues to be extended to us and let us look for ways to show mercy to others. If it is challenging to either accept mercy or offer mercy, let us turn in prayer to our Mother of Mercy for assistance. DIOCESAN SESQUICENTENNIAL From The Diocese of Wilmington Principals Notes The Diocese of Wilmington begins next week its celebration of the 150th anniversary of its founding with a year-long observance that will include Masses and prayer services, pilgrimages, keepsake publications, a traveling exhibit, and Convocation 150. The celebration commemorates the March 3, 1868 establishment of the Diocese of Wilmington by Blessed Pope Pius IX. The official logo and anniversary tagline, Rejoicing in the Lord since 1868, will be used throughout the year. The tagline reflects the episcopal motto of Bishop Malooly which is Rejoice in the Lord. VISION FOR THE FUTURE APPLICATION DEADLINE: MONDAY, MARCH 5! Please continue to remind families to apply for financial assistance, if needed. Deb Fols, Director of Development, will be attending the upcoming Administrators meeting to relay information about changes to the program and to answer any questions. Charity is demanding, but it is also heartening, for it is the carrying out of our basic Christian vocation and makes us sharers in the Lord s love. Saint John Paul II 2

3 PUTTING WITH MY PAL The HSA is trying something new for the annual Father/Daughter Event. This year it will be Putting with my Pal. The young ladies of IHM will have an opportunity to invite a special pal (Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Family Friend, Mentor, etc.) to play mini-golf at the Wilmington Riverfront. Mini-golf is a great way for the girls to have fun with their friends and bond with a special person in their life. The Putting with my Pal event will be held on Friday, June 1. Additional information and registration will be disseminated in upcoming weeks. If you would like to volunteer to assist with this event please hsa@ihm.org 3

4 IHM s Got Talent! Do you have a special talent? If so, we invite you to audition for the IHM Talent Show! Students chosen to participate will be able to showcase their talent at an all-school assembly during Arts Week on Thursday May 16, If you are interested in auditioning for the Talent Show, please return the attached form to the IHM Main Office or the form along with your 30 second video to: meganmcmackin@verizon.net The Talent Show committee is looking to showcase a wide range of talents in all grade levels. Please keep your act to no more than 3 minutes. Selection will be based on the type of talent, song selection (if applicable), costume and length of performance. ONLY COMPLETED FORMS AND VIDEOS WILL BE CONSIDERED. PATRICK S VISIT As part of their preparation for receiving Confirmation, our 8th grade students had the opportunity to meet some of our less fortunate neighbors, lend a hand in the food and clothing banks and make sandwiches for the homeless at St. Patrick s last week. CODING CLASSES Students in Mr. Phillip s 6th Grade Technology class are learning Coding. Students have the opportunity to work on their Chromebooks and learn the introductory elements and concepts. 5

March 2nd - TAG Day We are adding a Tag Day on to raise some funds for the Beau Biden Foundation, representatives of which will be joining us for a timely and important presentation on March 14th. (See below) March 14th - Cyber Security Session The HSA will be holding a Cyber Safety session presented by the Beau Biden Foundation on Wednesday, March 14th at 7 pm in the Lower Hall. This presentation is intended for adults. There will be an added Tag Day on March 2nd in which proceeds will go to this very generous foundation. The grand prize winner of the Answer to a Prayer Raffle will also be drawn that evening. More info to come in future. IHM S GOT TALENT The Talent Show, IHM s Got Talent, has been rescheduled for May 16. Please see page 4 of this newsletter for further information.
