1 29 March 2018 Edition Treasure Road, Queens Park WA 610 P: E: queenspark.ps@education.wa.edu.au FROM THE PRINCIPAL Thank you to all of our families who participated in last week s Harmony Day and who supported the whole school event by providing a plate of food for others to taste. The day finished with a Bollywood Dance group who took our children and staff, through some great dance moves. Well done everyone who joined in, it was at least 39 degrees in the undercover area and was extremely hot. A special thank you to Mrs Hockaday for organising the day, parents who helped out on the day and staff for ensuring everything went really smoothly. My favourite part of the day was the Indian and African National Anthems where students, families and staff from these Nations proudly sang their National Anthem. It really brings home the cultural diversity in our school of 37 different cultural groups, where many of our families have relocated to a new home without the support of their families. Thank you to Mrs McLeod s and Mr Banks year 3/4 class who continued with the theme of Harmony when they presented their item at the assembly on Friday. This was another excellent assembly attended by many of our community. Attendance Congratulations to Ms Chare s Pre-Primary class whose attendance hit a record high for Queens Park Primary School. Her children attended for 99.5% of the previous fortnight. All students but 1 attended 100% of that time. Please remember your child needs to attend the term for at least 90% of the time to be able to participate in reward day. Swimming Swimming begins next week and it will be a very busy last two weeks of school with swimming taking up a good 50% of the day. Please ensure all of your child s items they are taking to the swimming pool or their school uniform, including shoes and socks, are clearly labelled with their name. The staff will not be monitoring individual student items. If an item comes back and it does not have a name on it then we are unable to return it. NAPLAN Online Next week, our year 3 and 5 students will be completing a NAPLAN online practice test in preparation for the testing to take place in week 3 of next term. It is essential your child arrives at school on time next Thursday if they are in year 3 or 5. If your child is late then they will not sit the practice test. We will start testing by 9:00am.
2 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Children Arriving Late We still have a high number of children arriving at school late every day. We start school at 8:45am and the literacy block begins at 8:50am. If your child is arriving late at school every day, you are disadvantaging their learning in the English area. All children need to be proficient in English to be able to learn in all other areas of the curriculum. Please pop your alarms on 30 minutes earlier and try and get your children here by 8:30am when the classrooms open. If you would like any other strategies come and see me. School Board Our next Board meeting is scheduled for 28 May at 3:00pm. This will be an open Board meeting which means anyone who is not a Board member can attend. We currently have vacancies to join the board. These will be for 3 years and we currently meet once a term. Please read the information below, which outlines the duties of a Board member. If you have any questions regarding the positions please see a board member or myself. If you would like to nominate for the board please complete the nomination form below and send it to me. Have a lovely break and we will see all children back on Wednesday April 4 th. ANZAC Day An Anzac Day Service will be held at Queens Park Primary at 9.00am on Friday, April 13th. Donations of flowers for wreaths would be appreciated. Everyone is welcome to attend.
3 School Council Council, functions of The functions of a Council for a school are (a) to take part (b) (c) (d) (i) (ii) (iii) and in establishing, and reviewing from time to time, the school s objectives, priorities and general policy directions; and in the planning of financial arrangements necessary to fund those objectives, priorities and directions; and in evaluating the school s performance in achieving them; to promote the school in the community; and to take part in formulating codes of conduct for students at the school; and to determine, in consultation with students, their parents and staff of the school, a dress code for students when they are attending or representing the school; and (e) to carry out the functions given by sections 70, 99(4), 100(3), 108(2) and 216(5); and (f) to undertake such other functions prescribed by the regulations for the purposes of this section. Please forward all nominations to the front office. I look forward to working with new board members. I would like to nominate for the position of parent or community member on the Queens Park Primary School Board. My Child/ren are in years : Contact Phone Number Signature:
4 News around Our School Assembly Our school assembly is being hosted by Mrs Hastings room 2 next week at 9am. They are presenting a play about litter and recycling. Come along, meet other parents and have a cup of tea or coffee from 8.30am onwards. Please note assembly will be held in the morning due to in-term swimming. In-term Swimming We ve now allocated groups for students who are participating in our In-term Swimming Program. You should have received a note home as to which group your child is in. Please come and see the office on Wednesday morning if you are unsure. We ask that you please make sure your child has everything they need for their first lesson on Wednesday. It helps if everything is clearly marked with the child s name and room number, this includes their towels. Please consider marking a recyclable shopping bag clearly on the outside so that your child can put their clothes into it at the pool. They can then easily find the bag at the end of their session. This lessens the chance of lost socks, shoes or shirts. Student Toilets If any parents require the use of the toilets please ensure you use the staff toilets not the children s toilets.
