Advent is a time of preparation and celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. One of the traditions of Advent is the Wreath. This circular evergreen wreath usually contains four candles, three purple and one pink, each one representing one of the Sundays of Advent. The first purple candle was lit yesterday and it represents hope or expectation of the coming Messiah. This Tuesday, 4 th December l look forward to welcoming families to our school for our annual picnic and Christmas carols. The gates will open at 5.00pm and families are welcome to bring a picnic to share or you can purchase sausages ($2.50), hamburgers or vegie burgers ($3.00) for dinner. At 6.30 pm students will be called to line up so that we are all ready and seated to start our Carols in the church at 7.00pm. It is expected that all families will attend this event as we are gathering as a community to prepare for Advent and to share our learning in Music this year; if your family is unable to attend, can you please let me know via or call to the office. As the school year draws to a close, we will be saying farewell to Rosanna Esposito and Krystal Warburton who came to work at our school during this year and will not be returning as classroom teachers in We thank you for all your work here at SJW and wish you well in the future. We would like to recognise and acknowledge the work of Rosanna and Krystal at a special assembly on Thursday, 6th December. It would be wonderful if parents could join us to thank these teachers for all their work here at St Joseph the Worker Primary School. The role of School Captains is very important in a school and in recent weeks, aspiring students in Year 5 have been interviewed by school leaders, presented a speech to their peers and voting has been completed. We will formally announce the 2019 School Captains at our final assembly this Thursday, 6 th December and l invite all interested parents and family members to join us at this assembly. School reports will be sent home later next week. I thank staff for their time and effort assessing the students and providing you with details of their progress, standards

2 achieved and suggestions for future learning. Parents wishing to discuss their child s report are encouraged to make a time to discuss this with their child s teacher. Whole school orientation will take place on Friday, 14 th December. We believe this provides students with the opportunity to make connections in preparation for the coming year. Please be reassured that as a staff we have endeavoured to place each child in a supportive learning environment. Staff spend many hours working together to discuss student placement and there are many considerations regarding where a students should work in the following year. In the spirit of working together, l ask parents to discuss class placements in a positive way with their child. Thank you to all our parents and friends who supported our recent Election Day BBQ. We raised $ , which was a great effort on such a cold and windy day. Special thanks to Assunta Arthur for organising the BBQ and the P&F helpers who assisted on the day. It was a very exciting week for some of our students at SJW last week. The students in Year 2 and MLA classes moved back into their classrooms after six months. I thank all the students and teachers for their ongoing support and patience during this time. It has been challenging however everyone has worked together to make the best of it and learning has continued as expected. We are hopeful that final restoration work on the corridor outside the teaching planning room will be completed before the end of the year. This will mean that when we return in 2019, all rooms are ready for use again. Our thank you morning tea is on this Thursday, 6th December. All parents who have assisted during the year are welcome at this morning tea so we can thank you for all your support and assistance throughout the year. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday. As we are investigating a new uniform for SJW in 2020, l would like to ask all families of students in Year 6 to donate their child s uniform to the school at the end of This would provide parents with the opportunity to have a uniform for their child for 2019, rather than purchase a new one. 3 Congratulations to Cara Boustead on her recent running success. Cara is a professional athlete who regularly competes in races on the weekend and below is a photo of her recent success, winning a first place. Well done Cara. Congratulations also to Daniel, Julian and younger brother, Jude Saccuzzo on their recent success competing in a Ninja Warrior competition. All three boys finished with a medal and Daniel finished first in his age group and has qualified to compete in the USA in July. What a fantastic effort!

When we see a need we must take action and do something about it. Advent is a time to be generous and to think of others. Each year the Parish Liturgy Team prepare an Advent Giving Tree to collect food items to support families and people in need in our community. To support this worthy program, families are invited to purchase the item written on the star and place it near the tree in the Church for distribution before Christmas.

Pope Francis This week, we celebrated the First Sunday of Advent as we joyously wait for Jesus coming at Christmas. There are so many wonderful Advent traditions you can share with your family. One of these is the Advent Wreath. The green wreath is a never-ending circle just like God s love for us. The four candles (three violet and one pink) represent Jesus light in the world. On Sunday, we light the first violet candle and read Luke s Gospel Luke 21:25-28, Then we begin to count the days until the birth of Baby Jesus. During this season of Advent, as a Catholic community, we are asked to keep our eyes and ears open to be ready to recognise God moments in others; to recognise and appreciate the people around us who Make Jesus Real. We are also called to be aware of people in need. Pope Francis says that sometimes helping those in need may be as simple as saying a kind word, a greeting, a Good morning! or even a smile. He says, These gestures cost us nothing but they can offer hope, open doors, and change the life of someone stuck in the shadows.

8 Year 2 Bike Ed This term as part of our Healthy Living unit, the Year 2 students participated in Bike Education classes run by Vanessa Bof from Cycling Australia. The students were taught skills to assist them to ride safely, helping them to develop their knowledge and confidence with cycling. The students had a lot of fun and really enjoyed this wonderful program.

9 Over the past two weeks in before and after care we have started getting into the Christmas spirit. We made our own advent calendar to start our Christmas countdown. We have been making our own personalised Christmas baubles and Christmas stockings. We have also visited Santa s website multiple times to write him letters and tell him what we want for Christmas. He always writes back straight away, and his letters always make us laugh. Over the next few weeks we are looking forward to continuing with more Christmas cooking and craft activities.
