3 LAIKIPIA P.O. Box , NYAHURURU, KENYA UNIVERSITY TEL: +254-(0) ; Cell: / 0) CONCEPT NOTE LAIKPIA UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SPORTS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN KENYA AND BEYOND Overview Laikipia University is holding her inaugural sports conference from 22nd to 24th May, This conference brings together academics, professionals, sportspeople and other key stakeholders to exchange ideas and developsynergieson the role of sports in development. The conference will discuss pertinent issues that impact on the sports industry and highlight some of the emerging issues that have a bearing on the running and management of sports as a national and individual endeavour. Sport is an important sector in our economy. Is it being captured adequately in our national books of accounts? Is it being given the attentions it deserves? It is with this in mind that Laikipia University has chosen the theme of this year s conference to be: Sports for Sustainable Development in Kenya andbeyond. Background Kenya is known for her sports men and women, who excel in many sports events especially athletics. The country has a well-developed Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts responsible for artistic, cultural and youth empowerment, and sports development. In addition to this, the Ministry of education, in its newly launched Competency Based Education Curriculum, has made Sports and Arts one of the three streams. The other two are Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). A competency-based curriculum is a curriculum that emphasizes what learners are expected To Do rather than what they are Expected to Know. In principle, such a curriculum is LEARNER-CENTRED and adaptive to the changing needs of students, teachers, and society. Given that the curriculum is for basic education (K12), higher learning institutions must align their programs to accommodate the graduates from the basic education levels who will have gone through the competency based curriculum by In addition, the last two years have given universities enough signals to wake up and find a niche. Itis in view of this, that Laikipia University has a vision of becoming the centre of excellence in Sports Science and Management in Africa. As part of this dream, she has decided to organise this conference on sports for sustainable development in Kenya and beyond as a platform for wide range of stakeholders to come together and help her think through this goal. 3
4 Rationale Kenya is a leading sporting nation winning gold medals in regional and continental championships in many sporting events. Kenyan runners excel in middle andlong distance races. Their exemplary performance is mainly attributed to residing in and training at high altitudes (Noakes, 1997). Unfortunately, Kenya does not have adequate andwell-designed high altitude training centers where local and international athletes and other sports men and women could camp and train in order to maximize their potential. Such centers would provide the needed support in terms of trained personnel, facilities and equipment for scientific trainingas well as catering for personal needs of the sportsmen and women. This support would also involve talent identification, development and management during the prime time of the sports person, as well as programs for those who retire from sports. Over the years, Kenyan coaches, sports scientists, administrators, researchers and trainers have had to travel abroad for studies. It is time to have local government sponsored institutions to do the same. The increasing importance of sports in Kenya, the demand for more qualified sports personnel is on the increase. Consequently, the need for a professionally well designed high altitude sports training center complete with appropriate equipment and the necessary personnel to cater for the needs of amateur and professional sports men and women is a national priority in sports management. The establishment of such a center will not only improve the quality of Kenyan sports personnel but will also improve the management of the industry as well. Thus, Laikipia University would like to establish a well-planned and equipped HIGH-ALTITUDE SPORTS TRAINING & RESEARCH CENTRE (HASTREC) as a contribution to Kenya Vision 2030 s social pillar for Gender, Youth, Sportsand Culture. In this endeavour, the University runs weekend seminars on sports management for men and women who manage sports teams in various institutions. She also has a sports science program from certificate, diploma, degreeto masters levels. She is in touch with camp managers across the country as well as sports men and women around Nyahururu town which has over 150 athletes training in the locality at any given time. Nyahururu area has over 31 training camps. Proceedings The conference theme will be addressed from different perspectives including sportspeoples life testimonies, plenary sessions, and parallel thematic discussions with expert discussants; paper presentations, exhibitions sessions and case studies among others. During the three days, participants are expected to learn from each other and to share their experiences, with presenters and discussants. At the end of the conference, the university expects to take home ideas on how to make her dream of becoming a centre of excellence in sports science and management come true. Results of the discussions will be published in conference proceedings which will be shared with stakeholders and participants. Welcome!!! 4 LAIKIPIA UNIVERSITY
