2 Introduction It is our policy that all children will wear school uniform when attending school, or when participating in a school-organised event outside normal school hours. Our school uniform is important to us. It is one way in which we identify ourselves as a school family and it promotes a strong, cohesive school identity which supports high standards and expectations in all areas of school life. Smartness and high standards of appearance are expected of all stakeholders and children at all times. Aims At Hinguar Primary School and Nursery, we believe that school uniform is important because it: Promotes a sense of pride in the school. Contributes to a feeling of community and belonging. Is practical and smart. Identifies the children within the school. Is not distracting in class (as fashion clothes might be). Has been designed with health and safety in mind. All children will wear school uniform and we encourage them to maintain an acceptable standard of clean and tidy dress in school. The uniform has been chosen after extensive consultation. Equality Hinguar Primary School and Nursery fully recognises its duty to comply with equality and diversity legislation and has a clear equality policy and aims. Hinguar Primary and Nursery school is fully committed to equality and diversity, and when carrying out our duties we shall have due regard to the need; to eliminate unlawful discrimination and harassment and promote equality of opportunity between genders. The role of parents We ask that all parents who send their children to our school support the school uniform policy. We believe that parents have a duty to send their children to school correctly dressed and ready for their daily schoolwork. Parents should ensure that their child has the correct uniform, and that it is clean and in good repair. Parents should label all items of clothing clearly with their child s name. The school welcomes children from all backgrounds and faith communities. If there are serious reasons, for example religious objections, why parents want their child to wear clothes that differ from the school uniform the school will look sympathetically at each request. Similarly, should an item of school uniform need to be modified for a child with disabilities, then parents are invited to draw this to the attention of the head teacher. 2

3 Our School Uniform The following information identifies specific items of uniform: Nursery Uniform Nursery Uniform Black trousers or black skirt-box pleat style only. Shirts or blouses white with long or short sleeves Tie Red V-Neck sweatshirt or cardigan with the school logo Red fleece jacket with the school logo Black, grey or white socks or tights Reception Year 6 Summer Uniform (April-July) Reception-Year 6 Summer Uniform (April-July) Black shorts, black trousers, black skirt box pleat style only or Summer dress red and white check Shirts or blouses white with long or short sleeves or white Polo shirt with school logo Tie to be worn if wearing a shirt or blouse Red V-Neck sweatshirt or cardigan with the school logo Red fleece jacket with the school logo Black, grey or white socks or tights Timings We will change to all wearing winter uniform from the beginning of the academic year until the Easter Holiday, at which point the pupils will all wear summer uniform. 3

4 Outdoor Clothing and Footwear Children will bring a coat to school each day, apart from during the hotter weather. We recognise that footwear needs to be practical. All children will wear low-heeled black shoes suitable for active play. The school actively promotes outdoor learning and would encourage parents to provide a pair of wellington boots for their child to be kept at school for outdoor activities. PE Kits PE is an important part of school life, assisting with the general health and wellbeing of our pupils. For health and safety reasons, it is essential that children are dressed appropriately for any physical activity. Appropriate footwear is essential: black trainers or plimsolls will be worn for outdoor physical activity and bare feet for gymnastics. The kit will be kept in school and taken home only at the end of a half term to be washed. All items of PE clothing must be identified with the child s name. Our PE kit is: (Reception-Year 6) Winter PE Kit Black jogging bottoms Red t-shirt with the school logo Red sweatshirt with the school logo Black shorts Summer PE Kit Red t-shirt with the school logo Red sweatshirt with the school logo Black shorts Swimming When swimming at school children will need a towel, swimming trunks or a one piece swimming costume, swimming cap and brush or comb, carried in a waterproof bag. All items are to be named clearly and regularly checked. Jewellery On health and safety grounds we do not allow children to wear jewellery in our school. The exceptions to this rule are earring studs in pierced ears and a watch. Children will need to have all earrings removed before participating in PE. The school advises parents to ensure any piercing of ears are carried out during the summer holidays to provide a suitable period of time, before school commences, so that earrings can be removed for PE by their child. If there are specific matters concerning removal of jewellery for PE, parents are requested to discuss this matter with the headteacher. Extreme Haircuts The school does not permit children to have haircuts that could serve as a distraction to other children. Hair which is shoulder length must be tied back with a red or black hair band. No further hair accessories will be worn in a pupils hair, unless for religious significance. 4

5 Fashion Items/Other Children come to school to learn. We believe that fashion items are best kept for home for reasons such as health and safety and inclusion. Fashion accessories such as make-up, nail varnish, jewellery, other than stud earrings and watches should not be worn. Appropriate sun hats should be worn outside during sunny weather, rather than bandanas. Implementing and Monitoring this Policy All staff are responsible for implementing this policy. Pupils should be praised when they are wearing appropriate clothing. If children wear inappropriate clothing such as make-up or jewellery the class teacher should discuss the school dress code initially with them. Parents may need to be contacted to request that they support school policy. Non-Compliance with the School Uniform Policy The headteacher may discipline a child for a serious or consistent breach of the school s uniform and appearance policy. Where a pupil is not adhering to the school uniform policy parents will be informed. The school will provide parents the opportunity to purchase the required school uniform through the school s uniform shop. The role of governors The governing body supports the headteacher in implementing the school uniform and appearance policy. It considers all representations from parents regarding this policy, and liaises with the headteacher to ensure that the policy is implemented fairly and with sensitivity. It is the governors responsibility to ensure that the school uniform meets all national regulations concerning equality. Governors ensure that the school uniform and appearance policy helps children to dress sensibly, in clothing that is safe and practical. 5
