1 Friday, 5 May 2017 Dear Parents/Guardians, Peter Pan has begun This week our students began rehearsals for our 2017 production of Peter Pan. Following a large number of auditions last term the main cast gathered to begin the long road towards the Capital Theatre in September. The photo below shows students from Years 5 10 and gives a taste of the very special experience that lies ahead with students across six years working together. We wish them all the best over the coming months and look forward to the show. Explore Marist On Monday evening our College was on show to the broader community. Nothing on display was created especially for the evening and visitors were able to view normal learning activities and speak to students, staff and parents. It was a wonderful night in which to be involved. We had over 200 families visit us and the comments as they left were overwhelmingly positive. They liked our wonderful facilities and were surprised how spacious and beautiful they were. However, their greatest praise was for our students. Many of the visitors commented on the respectful, articulate students they had met. Congratulations to all the students who volunteered to be part of the evening. Whether being guides or being involved in learning activities our students certainly impressed all who came to explore Marist. One father s comment summed up many of the comments when he said to me I wanted one of the staff to explain what was going on but they didn t get a chance. The students were so keen to explain everything about their learning and they spoke so well. In wandering around during the evening I also enjoyed the obvious sense of community we have at Marist. Thank you to everyone involved in creating this community which we seemed to so naturally to display on Monday.

2 Outward bound I have listened to many stories this week about the experiences of our Year 9 students. There is no doubt the weather created some real challenges. There is also no doubt that there were many enjoyable moments of discovery and learning. It is interesting how many stories centre around the moments of real challenge. Two places which often feature in the stories are the top of the abseiling and the dark arrival at a campsite. In both places our students faced doubt and fear. Both situations ended in achievement and an increased self belief. I like that these are the stories our students remember and choose to retell. There were also many stories about students discovering skills that other students have which they had not realized. Many stories began with: you should have seen how good so and so was at or I really enjoyed spending time with. Congratulations to our students for embracing all that this experience presented. Thank you and congratulations to all the staff who accompanied our students and ensured that these many experiences were authentic. Year 8 camp This week we had all year levels at Marist for the first time this term. That changes again next week with our Year 8 students heading to Phillip Island for four nights. This experience has special significance as it remains almost unchanged from the first Year 8 camp held two years ago. As mentioned in previous letters this camp was designed by our students. Whilst it has had some minor changes each year the basic design remains. We wish all our year 8 students the very best for their camp and I again acknowledge and thank the staff who will leave their families and accompany our students for the week. Our camp program across the school has quickly developed into a comprehensive set of valuable experiences for our students. These experiences rely totally on the commitment of our staff and we are blessed to have such committed and talented people to accompany our students on all these camps. It is the quality of the relationships these staff develop with our students that ensure the camps are rich and authentic moments. Transition days Next week we will hold transition days for students looking to join Marist at Year 5 or Year 7 in The transition day is not a compulsory part of the process but we certainly encourage students to come along on the day designated to their current school. If you have not booked your child in, or you know a family who is thinking of enrolling but has not registered for a transition day it is not too late to contact Ms Johnson-Jean to register. This can be done via principal@marist.vic.edu.au or by phone It is envisaged that each day will have about 30 students attend. NAPLAN Students in Years 5, 7 and 9 will be involved in the annual NAPLAN testing next week. The data received from these national tests helps us to better understand the learning of individuals and year levels. Our staff are currently working with our Data and Pedagogy Learning Advisor, Mr John Eason, to increase our understanding of data and how it helps us develop learning plans for individuals and how we can recognize areas of required growth for groups of students within our college. I encourage all our students to adopt a positive approach to the various assessment tasks next week and see them as important tests at which they should try to do their best.

3 Representing Marist Congratulations to Tijana James, Holi Campbell and Abby Kilby represented Marist in the North Eastern Interschool Team Challenge. This was held on 22 and 23 April at Tatura. All girls achieved some personal bests and showed great team spirit, supporting each other throughout the weekend. They came 7th overall. Highlights were Holi taking out Champion in dressage and Tijana taking out Reserve Champion in show jumping. 7 At Marist we are doing transition a little differently. Why? Marist is a different learning experience, and we want a transition experience to reflect this. We will have a maximum of 56 students in Year 5 and 150 students in Year 7 in Who? Marist transition is being offered to students that are sure they will be applying at Marist or are seriously considering us as an option. Transition is NOT for students that have already decided they are going to another school in When? When a student comes to Marist for a learning experience will depend on which primary school they attend. We won t have 300 students in Year 7 so having a large group here for a transition doesn t give a student a genuine experience of our learning model and size.
