1 Newsletter September 2015 Dear members of Hindi Samaj of WA, Welcome to all the members of Hindi Samaj. This is the third newsletter of the current committee. Highlights of the main activities of the committee for the month are: Event Sangam Sandhaya organized successfully on 13 th Sept Excellent Feedback received from spectators Application submitted for CGP Grant. Sub-committees for Phulwari function formed. Paathshala 1. Third Branch of Paathshala: Work in progress to start a third branch at Piarawaters on 25 Oct Venue: decided and bulk reserved till Dec Teachers: advertised on Facebook, applications shortlisted and interviews held. Appointment letter to be issued. 4. Students: ongoing advertising on Facebook, few expression of interest received. 5. Grant: Initial discussions held with OMI officials on 17 Sept 2015, we will be applying for CLP project development grant, last date 19 Oct Face book pages face-lifted, work on facelift of website to be undertaken. Updates of HSWA Membership list under progress. Minutes circulated to all members. Other activities undertaken in the month Use of formal event feedback forms started, excellent feed back received. Summary highlights attached. प ठश ल क एक व र ठ श क षक ब शम र न १९ सत बर क म भ ग लय और इस पर एक रप टर क प र त त क Paathshala: Work in progress for opening of third branch of Paathshala at Piarawaters: 1 Venue finalised and hired till Dec Purchase of furniture and other equipment for running of school being done 2 Hindi teachers Advertised- application received and short listing being doneinterviews held. 3 Regular advertisement on Facebook for students Expression of Interest. 4 EOI flyers for membership and school enrolment's placed at strategic locations (grocery shops, schools etc). Banners draft designed. HSWA data and file uploaded on a cloud so that all members can access them. CGP Grant application for small project work submitted on 25 Sept 2015 and results awaited. HSWA Facebook page cleaned and updated. Regular advertisement are being uploaded now. Validation of HSWA membership list under progress. Hindi Samaj of WA 2

Attendance of participants and performers was well over 100. Ashraf ji who was the coordinator for the event had a great role to play in the success of the event. Running of the event and serving food to all went very well with co-operation from the whole committee and some of the family members of the committee. 6 A Day at the NSW Annual Community Language Conference By Ruby Sharma Teacher & Paathshala Coordinator, Subiaco Last month, I attended the NSW Annual Community Language Conference and Training Day held at the University of Sydney on 19th of September. I am grateful to the Office of Multicultural Interest (OMI) and Hindi Samaj of Western Australia (HSWA) for giving me this golden opportunity to gain vital information about community schools and its importance in today s society. The conference was attended by around 400 teachers from various community language schools. There were several workshops organised by professionals from Department of education, the Board of Studies, Macquarie University, NSW community language school teachers and Education Officer from NSW Community School. The conference started with a welcome dance presented by an Indian community school. The keynote speaker Professor Joseph Lo Bianco highlighted the importance and place of community languages in an extensively multicultural country like Australia. Thoughts were presented on how various old languages from different countries have been lost in modern society. Various issues related to community schools were addressed during the conference by Professor Joseph Lo Bianco, Mr Alberta Vella (president of NSW FCLS Inc.), Mr Stefan Romaniw, the Hon. Victor Dominello MP, the Hon. Sophie Cotsis MLC and Mr Hakan Harman (CEO Multicultural NSW). Out of various workshops the From Classroom Management to Student Engagement session was particularly relevant to the community language teachers. This session aimed at providing engaging activities during community language classes such as games, videos, flashcards, and so on. The speaker Nancy Morvillo also emphasized on the importance of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. I understand it is highly imperative for the community language teachers to get a generous understanding of these standards in order to run a meaningful class. In another workshop, Alex Di Prinzio presented 7 step methods in order to engage students in the activity and enhance the outcome of the language classes. As a teacher of Hindi Language I am excited to share this knowledge and experience with my fellow Paathshala (Hindi School) teachers. Surely our Hindi Paathshala will benefit from more structured engaging activities as a part of our lesson plans. Also, we would like to provide a greater flexibility within the classroom environment and tasks according to our students need. This experience has inspired me to aim and strive towards a better outcome from each session and I hope to pass this on to my colleagues. Attending the conference was a significant milestone for me as a language teacher not only because of the wonderful experience but also for the knowledge that was shared at this forum by several experts from the education department and schools. I would like to express my gratitude again to my Paathshala Principal Cordinator from HSWA and OMI for this enriching experience. Hindi Samaj of WA 6
