I would like to thank all the students, parents and staff for their tremendous hard work and support throughout the term. There have been many student achievements over the course of the term. Transition to electronic Newsletter As indicated in an earlier newsletter this term we have been transitioning to distributing the weekly school newsletter electronically. As of the first week of Term Two the school newsletter will be ed to all family addresses as provided by parents and also able to be downloaded off the School website as per already available. Families that have requested to still have a hard copy of the school newsletter will still be able to do so upon request. School Cross Country The Annual School Cross Country will be held this Thursday 29 March. The first race will commence shortly after 9am. The order of events commence with the 12 years boys and girls running 3km and then followed by the 11years, 10years and so on right through until the Prep aged students.

2 From the Principal Term Two The first day of Term Two for all students is Tuesday 17 April. Easter vacation May I wish all school staff, students and family members a safe and restful Easter vacation. Please take care if travelling on the roads. Happy Easter to all. Kind Regards David This term has rushed by us so quickly! From the Deputy Principal A huge thank you to our students, staff and families for making me feel so welcome. It has been a wonderful term full of laughter and learning. Thank you to our Year 3 and Year 4 parents who booked their parent teacher interviews online and attended in the hall. You will receive a survey to provide feedback as to the success and future opportunities in this format. We look forward to your feedback. Last week also saw our Playground Rangers complete their training. Our Year 6 students had the opportunity to volunteer to be a Playground Ranger. This is a support role in the playground. The students have learned about active listening, problem solving, effective support the High 5 strategy along with organising structured games with rules for Prep and Year 1 students. Our Playground Rangers are identified by the blue vest that they wear and are a huge asset in the playground. The Rangers will venture out in to the Year 2 and Year 3 playground next term. A busy week of events to end this term. I am looking forward to our Easter Bonnet Parade this Wednesday at 2:15pm in the Hall to be followed by our Cross Country on Thursday. We will also see a number of our year level teaching teams coming together to plan for term 2.

3 From the Deputy Principal Next term our Year 2-6 children will have the opportunity to participate in the ICAS assessments. The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, quality skills-based assessment program which rewards and recognises achievement. ICAS gives you broad insights into your child s performance across English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. ICAS (sometimes referred to as the UNSW assessments) has been developed by Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) since ICAS Paper Year Level Official Sitting Date Science May 2018 Spelling June 2018 Writing June 2018 English July 2018 Mathematics August 2018 You will receive more information in week 1 next term. The other assessment occurring next term is NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy). Dates are below and more information can be found at Year 3 Tuesday 15 May Wednesday 16 Language conventions 40 minutes May Reading 45 minutes Thursday 17 May Numeracy 45 minutes Year 5 Writing 40 minutes Language conventions 40 minutes Reading 50 minutes Numeracy 50 minutes Writing 40 minutes NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

4 From the Deputy Principal It is important to remember that NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests. The best preparation for NAPLAN is quality teaching of the Australian Curriculum and at Fernvale SS, this is one of the things we do best! Have wonderful and well-earned break and I look forward to an exciting term 2. Kylie Other School Matters School Banking Due to Cross Country this Thursday there will not be any School Banking. 7 Other School Matters Friends of Wakakirri There will be no rehearsal this Thursday afternoon. With it being Cross Country day and the last day of the term we have decided not to try for a rehearsal but hit the ground running in week one of next term. The kids in our team have been putting in an amazing effort so far and we have started looking at casting, a difficult job with so many talented students. Have a great holiday and we look forward to a busy second term. April is Autism Awareness Month. On World Autism Awareness Day, held each year on April 2, iconic buildings across Australia and the world will turn their lights blue for the entire month of April to promote autism awareness. Autism Queensland supports this global initiative, through its annual Go Blue for Autism campaign. On Friday, 20 April 2018 Fernvale State School will be raising awareness and funds to support people living with ASD and their families by holding a Go Blue for Autism Day. All students and staff are requested to Go Blue and donate a gold coin for Autism Queensland. For an additional gold coin donation students and staff will also have the opportunity to purchase a Go Blue for Autism tattoo or have their hair sprayed blue. (Please note students who are attending sport on Friday afternoon are not permitted to spray their hair as they will be representing our school). Thank you for your support. Karen Mahon Head of Special Education Telephone Numbers Student Absences: The student absence line is available if you wish to leave a message that your child will be away. Please include reason why and what class your child is in without waiting for your call to be answered which may be more convenient to you.
