2 THE SIXTH FORM COLLEGE, COLCHESTER 2017 Provisional Examination Results and Destinations Data Relating to Academic Year 2016/17 (Summer 2017 results) (as available October 2017) Also available on the College website:

3 INTRODUCTION Outstanding Student Retention Achievements and Progression 2016/17 The Sixth Form College is extremely proud of the reputation it has established over the last thirty years for very high academic standards and the outstanding achievements of our students. College students have consistently achieved excellent public examination results at A Level and the College has also been delighted with the level of student achievements in the range of other qualification areas including AS Level, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, GCSE and a range of more specialist courses including Extended Project Qualifications, Principles of Coaching Sport Award, IFS Financial Certificate and Diploma (Institute of Financial Studies), Royal School of Music Instrument Exams, Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Scheme and RSM and RADA exams and qualifications. Levels of overall in-year student retention completion of their study programme at the College continue to be exceptionally high (over 96% in 2016/17 year) well above the national average for year olds in all schools, academies and colleges. The College was particularly pleased with the Government reformed A level results. Results have been consistently above national averages and can be viewed as strong both in absolute terms and, also, perhaps more meaningfully, in value added terms. The package of AS/A (or IB) student qualifications and results achieved at age 18, compared to their GCSE results achieved in Year 11, is much higher than the national (international) norms. Our cohort of students who completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma achieved extremely well and their pass rate, total points score and average subject scores were, once again, very well above the IB international averages, with the students averaging 32 points significantly better results than the international average of 29 points of all IB schools including the results achieved in many of the prestigious independent or selective worldwide schools that offer the IB. As a result of the excellent examination results, a very high proportion of students completing Advanced Level study programmes at the College have the choice to progress into degree courses in Higher Education. In summer 2017, despite the high costs now involved in studying in HE, approximately 1000 of our very successful students chose to progress on university degree courses in a very wide variety of fields, including significant numbers who commenced degree courses in the prestigious fields of Medicine and related, Sciences, Engineering, Computing, IT, Mathematics, Languages, English, Economics, Journalism, Fine Art, Social Sciences, Law, Music, Business, Management, Finance, History and Geography. Many of the class of 2017 students have commenced degree courses in autumn 2017 whilst others have deferred and will start degrees in Other students have progressed to specialist Further Education courses in the fields of Art, Photography and Performing Arts and a good number of these students will also then progress to study degree courses. Six of our students were offered places at Oxford or Cambridge with over 300 of the summer 2016 leavers have or will progress to degree courses at Russell Group universities or other highly selective degree courses including at Law Schools or Medical Schools. A large number of students have chosen a gap year. In due course, you may wish to check the full 2017 student destination details from the programme for the Annual Reunion and Awards event, which will be held on 19 December The Programme will provide more substantial detail regarding 2017 student progression and will also be posted on the College website. Copies of the 2016 year programme, with details are posted on the website and paper copies will also be available on the Open Evenings. Student achievements at AS Level in summer 2017 were also excellent with a pass rate above the national average level and their package of average results provided a very positive overall valueadded measure. The College was particularly pleased with the AS results in Government reformed AS levels. This strong level of success achieved in lower sixth means that very many of last year s first year students have now built a very good base for A Level success in 2018, as well as providing them with very good AS qualifications in their own right. 2

4 At GCSE the pass rates at grades A* to C in 2017 were significantly above the national average Post 16 figures. This is particularly creditable when it is considered that the majority of the entries are from students who have achieved lower grades in Year 11 at school than they would like and most entries are re-sits of key GCSE subjects. The GCSE English and Mathematics resit results (from the results achieved in year 11 at school ) results were very strong and very substantially above the national averages for 16 to 18 year olds in schools, academies and colleges in England. The College was one of the first four colleges in the country to be awarded Beacon Status and was only the second Sixth Form College to be awarded a Queens Award for Higher and Further Education. The College s last full Ofsted inspection was in the 2012/13 academic year and feedback was very good. Please refer to the College website ( for the full Ofsted Report. Student achievements in a variety of other ways were also very impressive. In the fields of Sport, Music, Drama, Dance and Art, large numbers of College students have consistently demonstrated excellent standards. A number of students each year participate in active citizenship and voluntary service in the community, which includes a large group of students undertaking the pre-teaching programme, which involves support work on a regular basis in local schools, or the pre-clinical and Medics course, which provides good support and preparation for students hoping to apply for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Physiotherapy, etc. A further group of students are involved in sports coaching experiences which include organising sports projects activity with local schools. Over 30 of our students successfully completed the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Scheme last year, most through the College organised programme. Over 2,000 of our students are involved in sporting activities at the College each year - many on a very regular basis, with the excellent sports facilities supporting a huge range of opportunities. Involvement in the College Council, our Ambassador programme, the Sports Leadership programme, placements in local schools and in our Active Citizenship programme offers students opportunities to develop leadership and employability skills. There is also a considerable level of student involvement in charitable work. A very high proportion of students undertake one or more residential experiences while at the College and the varied programme includes a major, generally bi-annual, Expedition to India to support a disadvantaged community. The College has supported the Russ Foundation Community in Madjuri Province for almost 30 years and this also includes regular fundraising activities in College. There are also regular Expeditions to South America (Paraguay in 2017, in the past Peru and Ecuador) and Sri Lanka. Each year approximately 200 trips and visits are offered to College students. These experiences contribute much to student learning, personal development and development of wider skills, as well as making an outstanding contribution to the community. The time students spend at the College in a supportive young adult environment provides them with wide-ranging opportunities and contributes to preparation for successful progression into Higher Education, employment and adult life. Students are encouraged to work hard and play hard and their successes bear testimony to the ability of the vast majority of our students to achieve to their potential and also to develop and be prepared for their life beyond the College. *More specific detail, with regard to the examination results achieved by College students in the 2016/17 academic year, including subject level data, are given in subsequent pages. If further detail is required, please contact me or other senior staff at the College. These results are as accurate as can be provided at this time, based upon the provisional allocations of marks and grades by examination boards. DfE also publish some performance data each year on their website here. Please note, that this Government reforms to the National A and AS level qualifications system, commencing in 2015 and fully implemented in 2019, has made significant changes in the nature of A level courses and also grade awards. This makes meaningful comparisons of 2017 (and onwards) A level data with previous years difficult. Ian MacNaughton Principal October

5 STUDENT PROGRESSION AND DESTINATIONS SUMMER 2017 LEAVERS The Sixth Form College has significant experience and commitment to preparing students for entry to Higher Education before progressing to employment. Approximately 75% of our College Advanced Level Programme leavers progress directly to Higher Education courses after completing their studies at the College or study Art Foundation or take a gap year before progressing to HE. Many gap year students are successful in obtaining structured international community placements, including with the prestigious Latitude Global Volunteering organisation or EDT Year in Industry scheme. Our aim is to encourage and enthuse students about their Sixth Form studies and to help them to achieve and obtain the necessary qualifications for entry to their chosen courses in Higher Education and then employment or directly chosen employment areas. At the same time we aim to help our students acquire the skills, confidence and maturity necessary to succeed in their chosen courses of higher study, in their future careers and in their adult lives. Very large numbers of students from this College will progress to study degree courses at British universities. Indeed you are likely to find former students of the Sixth Form College currently studying at virtually every university in the country and the range of courses that students have now chosen is vast, ranging from Architecture, Anthropology, Banking, Fine Art and Geography to Law, Engineering, Medicine, Veterinary Science and Zoology, as well as modern degree courses, e.g. Internet Technologies, Biotechnology, Cybernetics Robotics, Film Studies, Applied Marine Science and Sports Science. A small but growing number of students are choosing to study for degrees abroad or online. The College has considerable expertise in guiding and advising students regarding all Higher Education options. The success of our former students in Higher Education indicates that the College prepares students very well for their future studies. A good number of students progress into local or national or international employment and training opportunities. The following table gives a summary of the provisional known destination of those second year students who left in summer 2017, as known in early October. Detailed information about the destination of students proceeding to Higher Education in 2016 can be found in the College Annual Reunion and Awards Event programme in December 2016, (available on the website or on the Open Evenings). Detailed 2017 destinations information will be included in the Programme for the 2017 Reunion and Awards event and will be available from late December These details will also be published on the College website PROVISIONAL KNOWN PROGRESSION/DESTINATIONS OF 18 YEAR OLD LEAVERS COMPLETING A LEVEL AND IB PROGRAMMES IN SUMMER 2017 (AS OF OCTOBER 2017) Provisional Numbers of Students University degree courses (directly in 2015/16 or after a gap year out or 997 completing other courses in 2015/16 with degree course confirmed for 2017 year entry) Art Foundation courses (most with degree course progression planned for entry) Other HE/FE courses (including Drama, Music, Dance) 27 Employment, Training, Apprenticeships 185 Returned to College for further study 7 Travel / gap year out (without firm degree course offers or other plans for next 87 year at present) or considering Options or Moved Away or Unknown
