1 Term 2Week 3 7th May, Drayton Wellcamp Rd Wellcamp Toowoomba Ph Fax Student Absences Ph School Watch If you see any suspicious activity at our school. Ph Kym s Korner We had a wonderful day yesterday with many of our prep one parents visiting the classroom for the morning to see what their children are learning. Well done Miss Dowe and children, you put on a great morning for our visitors. The mother s day stall is tomorrow so dads don t forget to give your kids a bit of spending money. Spoil mum and help out the school at the same time. NAPLAN is next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for Year 3 & 5 students. Please have your students at school at the normal time and make sure they have had a good night s sleep and a healthy breakfast. Year three tests will be conducted in the library and year five tests will be in their classroom. Sessions will be supervised by the class teacher. The year four and six students will work with Mrs McDonald. If your student is absent due to illness please inform the office that morning. Kym With Thanks Jen organising the Awesome Garage Sale on the weekend. And to everyone that helped out along the way, on the day or by donating to the sale. Thank you! Mr Duncan for coming along to our ANZAC Parade to tell us all about ANZAC day and his time in the army. A huge thank you to Ergon Energy who has, with a grant from the Ergon Energy Community Fund, helped us make our A Block classroom more energy efficient. We have had our ceiling lowered, insulation installed and replaced our two old air conditioners with more economical air conditioners. Thank you also the P&C who have helped fund this project Voluntary Levy Thank you to those families that have contributed to our voluntary scheme. We are asking for only $20 per student, or $5 per term. This money is used to enhance learning by providing photocopies of student worksheets and other educational material and also includes your child s participation in the CWA International Day Morning Tea (Term 2) and special activities like cooking. As preparations are currently being organised for this year s CWA Morning, please note if you have chosen not to participate, your child will need to bring their own morning tea this day. This scheme is completely voluntary, if you choose not to participate, please complete the paperwork sent home earlier this year, and we will need to make alternative arrangements for provision of material normally covered by this contribution. If you opted to pay per term, please note this is now due. Please don t hesitate to contact the office if you have any questions. Thank you for your support in this matter. The P&C are running their annual Mothers Day Stall which will be held tomorrow (Friday, 8th May). All classes will be able to visit the stall to purchase gifts for their loved ones. Gifts will be for sale from $1 to $4. If you would like your child to buy from the stall, please send along some money with them in a sealed labelled envelope. We are unable to accept IOUs. Thank you to Carla for organising the stall this year.

2 Tuckshop Thursday Morning Tea Sarah T Lunch Grace Mc & Ann C Fruit Salad Prep Nellie L Morning Tea Special Giant Smartie Cookie (Paula N) Lunch Special Toasted Sandwich - $2.00 Ham/Cheese or Chicken/Cheese Tomato 50c extra On the 23rd April, students in the 5-6 class were visited by two representatives from Robogals Toowoomba (which is a student-run organisation that aims to increase female participation in engineering and technology). Our workshop started with students being asked to demonstrate programming logic by guiding a blindfolded student through a maze in our classroom, as if the blindfolded student was a robot. Our students loved this activity as they eagerly observed how the student robot responded to each command. Then, in groups, students had to construct their lego robots. This was a challenging activity as students had to work out how to follow instructions, look for certain pieces and take turns building. Finally, students were able to apply what they learnt from observing their student robot to come up with ideas on how to program their own LEGO taskbot to navigate a maze. This took a LOT of trial and error and perseverance but also a whole HEAP of fun! What does all of this mean in the real world? Programming a robot to navigate a maze is similar to real-world engineering design projects, such as controlling a Mars Rover to explore the planet surface. Congratulations to those groups who successfully programmed their taskbot to navigate a maze...just imagine what you will be capable of in the future! Friday the 24th of April was a very special and memorable occasion for the students and staff at Wellcamp. We conducted an ANZAC remembrance ceremony to celebrate 100 years since the landing of Gallipoli. Students took part in the singing of the platinum hit Spirit of the ANZAC s along with laying wreaths and having ANZAC biscuits and cordial at the completion of the ceremony. It was very touching to see so many supportive parents attend our very special ceremony. During the week were very fortunate to learn of direct descendants of our students who fought bravely in WW1 with displays of medals and telegrams. It was great to hear so many students attending dawn services over the area and ANZAC day parades. Much of what we enjoy in our lives today was made possible by the men and women who fought to defend our country in the past. Lest we forget.

3 The Prep/Year 1 Classroom was abuzz with the sounds of excitement yesterday. Our Parent Open Morning produced a lot of excitement. The children loved having their visitors in the classroom. Parents were shown what a normal day in our classroom was like this included some amusing moments. Some Mums were most impressed with the technology we have in our classroom, especially the new TouchBoard. Other parents were happily surprised to see their children concentrating and working well. We had many parents come in to see their children at work and have a chat to other parents. Miss Dowe was extremely proud of the children and how they maintained their effort and behaviour whilst being so excited. A huge thank you to those parents who attended. It was very huge much appreciated and enjoyed by us all. We think it might have to become a regular event!
