1 Friday 10th November 2017 Newsletter 9 Volume 24 Follow us on Headteacher s update Dear parents/carers, We began our school week by looking at Gospel Values learned and wise which we are focusing on this half term. We looked at the life of St Martin de Porres and how he was learned and wise in the way that he made the most of his God-given talents by studying hard so that he could devote his life to healing the sick. Our School Council met this week to prepare for a special assembly in which they will be sharing their ideas about being a good friend with the rest of the school. During the assembly they will be launching an exciting competition watch this space! This week Mrs Burrows and I enjoyed talking to a group of children from across the school about what they enjoy about science. We found out that they love having the opportunities to explore, investigate, test out their ideas and learn new things through practical activities in school. We were also delighted to hear about all of the exciting experiments that children, who have taken the science bags home, have done so far this year including fire writing and testing chemical reactions! A number of our year 4 children were put through their paces this week as they took part in the Bikeability programme. They had a great time learning about the importance of safety whilst riding their bikes. Our year 4 chaplaincy team were real ambassadors for the school as they represented us at the Our Lady of Lourdes MAC Remembrance Service at St Augustine s this morning. They did a fantastic job of sharing a reading during the moving and poignant prayer service. Finally, as the Advent season approaches, please do keep an eye on diary dates for events taking place for the remainder of this term. This year s Operation Christmas Child appeal run by the Samaritan s Purse was launched in assembly today. Children have been given leaflets with guidance on how to decorate and fill a shoebox. If you, or anyone you know, would like to apply for a place in any of these year groups, please contact the school office. Catholic and non Catholic applicants are very welcome. CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCES Ticket request forms will be sent home today and can be found on page 4 of this newsletter. Due to space restrictions, please do not reserve tickets for children who will have seen the performances during rehearsals in school. Tickets will be issued on a first come first served basis. To order for children in Years 3 and 4, the above still applies but you will also need to include 2.20 per child in the envelope. Please see page 5 of this newsletter for the menu. NON UNIFORM DAY CHRISTMAS FAYRE On Friday 24 th November we will be having our traditional non-uniform day when, in exchange for children wearing clothes of their own choice, they are asked to bring in an item for our annual Christmas fayre. To ensure that all of the stalls are well-stocked, we are requesting that Reception and Yr1 bring chocolates and Yr 2, 3 & 4 bring bottles. The PFA would hugely appreciate any help with sorting the items on the morning of the 24 th November and also with running stalls at the Christmas Fayre on Friday 1 st December. PHONIC WORKSHOP Next Tuesday at 2pm there will be a Phonics Workshop for parents of children in Reception. LUNCHTIME SUPERVISOR VACANCY We have a vacancy for a lunchtime supervisor. Hours are 12 noon pm, Monday to Friday, term time only. Please contact the school office for further details. ODD SOCKS DAY As part of National Anti-bullying Week (13 th -17 th November) we will be holding an Odd Socks Day on Friday 17 th November to celebrate that we are all unique, special and equal in the eyes of God. Donations will be greatly welcomed will go to Bliss Charity for sick and premature babies. MOUNT CARMEL DOES STRICTLY The next couple will be revealed over the weekend. To find out who it is go to Our Lady of Mount Carmel PFA Facebook page BLISS LITTLE LIGHTS CHARITY WALK On Friday November 17th there will be a short walk to raise money for the vital care for sick and premature babies. If you would like to be involved, please meet at 6.30pm on the main car park at Headless Cross with your lanterns, glow sticks and torches. Children are more than welcome! The walk will begin at 6.45pm and will take you via the Rose and Crown for refreshments of your choice before heading back to the car park at Headless Cross. If you would like to donate to the charity, please do so via the just giving page All money raised goes direct to the Bliss Charity.
