1 Preparatory School Weekly Newsletter Friday 18th May 2018 From The Headmaster Preparations for the Summer Ball are taking place, or possibly completed, enjoyed and dismantled if you read this after Saturday night. The 80s theme has proved popular with parents and there are rumours that Amazon is fast running out of 80s outfits. More details to follow next week... Eco-School Award Many of you will know of the hard work that Mrs Johnson and the Eco-Committee have put in to ensure that the School is eco-efficient and ecoaware. These efforts have been rewarded this week with the awarding of the first stage of the Eco-Schools ranking with the issue of the Bronze Award. This is a great achievement and Mrs Johnson has informed me that we are already well on the way to both the Silver and Gold Awards. The public screening of the Plastic Ocean has been a highlight, but so, too, have been the Beach Cleans, the setting up of the Pen and Battery Recycling points and a whole host of other initiatives instigated by the Eco-Committee. Well done to all involved, and many thanks to parents for all their support. Show and Tell Year 6 took time off from their exam schedule to show parents around their Humanities work on Tuesday evening in the Show and Tell event. Volcanoes of different shapes and sizes, Motte and Bailey castles of every conceivable design and lots of good book-based humanities work were all on show and were a testament to the quality of education in the department. Thanks to Mrs Mason for setting up the event and to both her and Mr Collard for inspirational teaching. Honeypot Assembly We were delighted to welcome Mrs Viv Carter, the Regional Community Fund Raiser for the Honeypot Charity and her good friend, Bumble, the Honeypot mascot, to Durlston last Friday. You may recall that we supported the Honeypot Charity an organisation that provides respite support for young carers in the Easter Activity Trail. Mrs Carter came to receive the cheque from the School during Assembly and I am delighted to include an extract from her letter of thanks below: On behalf of the staff and children at the Honeypot Children s Charity, I would like to extend my thanks to everyone at Durlston Court School for the donation of , raised from the Easter Activity Trail on 24th March I am delighted to inform you that at our Honeypot stall at the event we also raised from our tombola. This takes the grand total raised from the event this year to 660. I really enjoyed visiting Durlston Court School last Friday and am glad I was able to say thank you in person to the Prep School and those students involved - this is a fantastic amount and we are so grateful for your support again. Bumble enjoyed his visit to school too! Interestingly, Mrs Carter and Bumble are never seen in the same room at the same time...

2 Preparatory School Sports Highlights Highlights this week are the performances from the U8 and U9 Durlston swim teams. Both were winners of the Walhampton Gala. Congratulations also to our U11 Girls Cricket Team, winners of the West Hill Park Tournament for 9 local schools. Year 6 SATS Treat After a week of SATS exams, the year 6 pupils enjoyed their time in the sunshine with an icecream; well deserved after the hard work, focus and positivity. I am sure the real celebrations, however, will take place next week when they head out on their camping trip. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Ball tomorrow; best wishes for a great weekend and week ahead to one and all. Richard May Sports Kit for Ghana Thank you to everybody who has donated their old sports kit for Beatriz Mowat to take to a school in Ghana. The last collection from the bus shelter will be on Friday 25th May. Adult sized sports shoes and football boots are especially needed. Additional mention to Freddie Fox who has qualified for the IAPS National Swimming Championships in Crawley on the 9th of June. He will compete in the 50m Freestyle. Good luck, Freddie and well done.

3 Preparatory School From Pre-Prep If you are not already following the Pre-Prep Twitter feed, please do so by visiting: We will be posting regular updates about all the fun and learning taking place. Pre-Prep has had lots of visitors this week residents from Kingfishers care home on Monday and parents of Mrs McManus class on Tuesday. Everyone was so impressed with the fabulous interactions taking place. Mrs Hill must surely get a special award for her balancing skills on the Trim Trail - can you spot her in the playground photo below? Year One and Two both went on expeditions up to the Art Department to work on Rainforest themed artwork which will soon be showcased at the annual Art Exhibition. A big thank you to Mrs Taylor for leading these inspiring sessions. In Reception, the highlight of the week or perhaps the year was a trip to Paultons Park. What a magical place for our youngest children to experience their first school trip. Rides, animals, a picnic lunch, sunshine, laughter simply perfect! Preparations for the Royal Wedding this weekend have also featured prominently and a very special party is planned for Golden Time. Enjoy the celebrations! Gilly Smith

4 Preparatory School Years 1 & 2 Art The pupils from Year 1 & 2 enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Art Studio to help to make a large jungle snake out of lots of different materials. They were inspired by looking at the paintings made by the Australian Aboriginal artists who continue to tell stories about their culture and land through their artwork. The pupils enjoyed collaging their large dots with patterned papers and fabric to create the look of the scales on the skin of a jungle snake. The highly textured and colourful snake started to take shape as it was covered with these collaged dots. The huge snake will wiggle its way to the Hayward Centre for our Summer Art Exhibition! 5 Preparatory School Arts Award As set out in the Durlston Vision (ABC), pupils have been working towards their Arts Award run by Trinity College, London. This week the Year 8 pupils have been completing the 'skill share' element in the Design and Technology Centre with the Year 3 pupils. Year 8 pupils were fantastic at supporting Year 3 whilst exploring the art of batik. A true Durlston family

We are very fortunate that the Treehouse Theatre Company, (who were due to be with us that day) will be visiting on Friday 25th May to do the Ancient Rome story telling workshops with the Middle School that they had planned to do previously. It would be great if you could dig out your child s Roman costume to wear on this day, as the children will be spending the morning immersing themselves in all things Roman. It is important to add that a simple, Roman costume is all that is required. Please contact me if you are unsure about how to go about this. In the afternoon, games kit will be worn.
