3 WASH ATLAS Zimbabwe Preface In the context of the UN Millennium Declaration, the crucial importance of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for the attainment of most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is becoming increasingly evident. In order to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation (Goal 7, target 10), it is of vital importance that in Sub-Sahara Africa efforts are intensified to accelerate the development of the water supply and sanitation sector. In Zimbabwe, UNICEF is the lead UN agency on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and coordinates the WASH Cluster, which brings together local and international NGOs, donors, UN agencies and Government departments. In order to strengthen its coordination role, UNICEF has been developing planning tools such as this WASH ATLAS. This WASH ATLAS provides an overview of WASH implementing organisations that have been active in Zimbabwe in the period in addition to the Government. The ATLAS is designed to improve evidence-based planning in the Water and Sanitation sector. Within the context of the WASH Cluster, the ATLAS is being disseminated annually in order to improve planning and programming as well as the coordination of activities among stakeholders. The information presented in this ATLAS is drawn from Government, non-profit organisations active in Water and Sanitation (local and international NGOs as well as UN agencies) and donor agencies. Data collection is premised on the basis of an interactive relationship with these stakeholders, which is considered to be a prerequisite for continuous updating of the ATLAS. We would like to take this opportunity to express appreciation to all stakeholders that have contributed to the development of the WASH ATLAS. In particular we would like to express our appreciation to the European Commission Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) for their financial support in the establishment of this ATLAS. Special thanks go out to the various organisations that have submitted information about their Water, Sanitation and Hygiene projects.
