1 Weekly Sports Report 26 October Term 4 - Week 3 Inside this edition From the Head of Sport - Cricket, Volleyball and AFL trial dates - Track and Field Results UPCOMING EVENTS Wednesday 31 October AIC Water Polo Match 3 MCA SPORTS CONNECT From the Head of Sport 2018 TRACK AND FIELD AIC CHPIONS Congratulations to the 2018 Track & Field squad on an exceptional performance in winning the AIC Championship for the 4th time in a row. Once again the standard of competition was outstanding with 10 AIC records being broken across the two days of competition. Amongst those record breakers were three MCA students and our 6 x 400m relay team (all listed below). We mentioned last year how the success of our track and field team has encouraged other Colleges to invest heavily into the training programs and coaching of their athletes. This year was no exception. This level of competition has resulted in our squad taking their standards to a new level. I commend all students and staff on the impressive way in which they have continued their commitment to achieving this level of success and their ultimate goal of winning the AIC championships. The final margin of points between 1st and 2nd was the largest winning margin ever recorded in AIC track and field. Even with this impressive performance, there were still some quality athletes unavailable through injury, so it was fantastic to see some new blood contribute to an outstanding team performance. After the first night of competition on Monday and going into the major competition on Tuesday, we held a 38-point lead over Iona College. This margin was continually extended throughout the day as each score update was read to the crowd and our students continued to produce strong performances. Last year we saw a procession of 2nd places in our age group competition that demonstrated the depth of our squad but with the dominance of the entire team this was turned into four age championships and two runner s up with our 14 s age group missing by a mere 0.5 point. It was a fitting finale for our Open team to finish the 2018 sporting year with another Championship trophy for the Seniors. The aggregate announcement of Iona in 2nd place saw another enormous eruption of elation from both the Ashgrove athletes on the track and the supporting students in the stand that demonstrated how much it meant to the boys involved. This carnival is held in front of the largest crowd to attend any sporting event at AIC with over 4000 people filling the grandstands. The athletes involved were very proud to have again achieved this task, not only for themselves but for each of you. Over a 14-week block, during and after school there is an enormous amount of time and effort devoted to the preparation of our athletes. As we approach the end of an increasingly busy sporting year, I sincerely thank each and every student, coach, coordinator, staff member and family for their involvement in another busy year of Marist Ashgrove sport. The collaborative involvement of these groups of people in our sporting programs exemplifies the Marist community and allows us all to create and share in the successes we achieve. Trials for Term 1 Sports As usual, following the typical whirlwind finish to the sporting year we move quickly into organising the 2019 cricket, volleyball and AFL seasons. Next week sees these trials and training sessions build up for all age groups. All information is below and can also be found in the school notices and on the website. The Term 1 sports of cricket, volleyball and AFL are heavily skill based and require hours of practice. Years of research identifies a figure of 10, 000 hours of practice to master a skill. This equates to approximately 3 hrs a day for 9-10 years to master a skill. Obviously this is very difficult to do, but the point of this is that you can never practice skill-based sports too much and your Christmas holidays should involve as much practice as you can to be ready to go next year. 5 Cricket Trial Dates The dates of cricket trials for those who wish to be considered for an A or B cricket team in 2019 will be held in Week 4 and Week 5. The Year levels below refer to 2019 year levels. Monday - Year 10 Tuesday - Year 8 Wednesday - Year 9 All trials will be completed on Cameron oval from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. AFL Trial Dates The senior AFL team (10, 11 and 12s 2019) - Wednesdays 3:30pm-5:00pm and Friday mornings 6:45am - 8:00am on Hayden Oval.
