2 Dear Parents, The sound of piano music is still ringing in my ears from the Upper Junior Assembly where we were entertained to a virtuoso performance by Alec in Year 6. What was even more impressive about his four minute piece was that he played it without music and it was composed solely by him. Congratulations Alec on a wonderful performance. Please can I ask you all to complete the travel survey that has been ed out to you this afternoon. The survey needs to be completed by each family before half term. Durham won the battle of the house credits this week, 5U won the class cup and in the Lower Juniors, Nursery took home Roary the Lion. Last Saturday saw the U11 Basketball Team travel to ACS Cobham to compete in the IAPS National Championships. I was fortunate enough to catch some of the play en route to umpire hockey at Surbiton and was very impressed with the teamwork shown by all the boys. In a close fought group they lost out on cup qualification by one basket and so went into the plate competition. Not disheartened they went on to win the plate which was richly deserved success for the hard work during the day. My thanks to Miss Henderson and Mr Moore for taking the team and for the vociferous support from the parents. Well done to all involved. On Wednesday I was transported into the Surrealist world of Dali and others as I took part in a Year 5 Art lesson. The standard of work was extremely high with such extreme combinations as a lobster with spanners as claws and a feather and tap combination all created in charcoal. Thank you to 5U and Miss Bisdee for a very enjoyable and informative hour in the Art Room. Tomorrow sees our U11 boys and girls hockey teams take to the astro for our annual hockey tournament. We are all looking forward to welcoming lots of schools to Royal Russell. It will be extremely busy on site tomorrow and I would encourage you to walk in from further afield where at all possible. It has not escaped my notice this week as the weather has veered from one extreme to another that an increasing number of children are coming to school in a variety of random coats that bear no resemblance to the school uniform. I would be very grateful if you could follow the uniform guidelines to ensure your child is in the correct uniform and to assist us in returning lost items. Please name all your items correctly. 5 In Art and DT this week Year 3 have been designing and making shadow puppets.

7 Year 6 had a fantastic time on Tuesday cooking, learning how to make dough and bake bread rolls, in preparation for designing and making their own bread creations.

11 This term Year 1 have been learning about Polar Explorers and have been busy making ice baubles which they have hung on trees. They tried to estimate how long it would take for each bauble to melt and what might make the process slower or faster. The children came up with some great ideas!

12 In Art Club this week we have been marbling paper

13 There was some exceptional basketball played by our U11s who travelled to ACS Cobham for the IAPS competition last Saturday. The team started off well against last years tournament champions Kings College Madrid but unfortunately lost by two baskets in the last three minutes. The team kept their heads up and went on to win a very intense game against Solefield in extra time (5-3). A convincing 22-0 win over The British School of Paris meant that by goal difference, Royal Russell finished 3 rd in the group which took them in to the Plate Competition. A solid 10-2 win against Edge Grove saw us in to the final against a strong Radnor House team however the Royal Russell team were on fire by this point, working so hard with great defence, attacking and fighting for every rebound. Royal Russell went on to win (8-2) finishing as the Plate Tournament Winners. Overall a great sporting day out, playing basketball and making new friends from Madrid! 4 wins and 1 narrow loss all day was a great achievement and the team should be very proud of themselves. Well done!

14 The pupils all swam really well at the South Norwood 2 qualifier with some fantastic pbs. Croydon Schools swimming Gala We now wait for the 6 qualifying galas to finish to see if any pupils have made it into the top 6 and therefore qualify to the finals in March. 15 Dry slope Skiing! Our beginners enjoyed their first dry slope skiing session and made excellent progress. With all of the pupils using the drag lift and the big slope!

16 These will once again take place every Friday afternoon at 2.50pm. You are warmly invited to join us to celebrate the children s academic success, exceptional behaviour and of course, any birthdays from the week. If you would like to attend Celebration Assembly, please arrive at school no earlier 2.40pm to ensure plenty of time for you to be seated before the children arrive. Please also ensure that you do not use mobile phones or talk during this assembly as this can be distracting for the children. We will be celebrating birthdays on the following days: 2 nd February: Birthdays between 29 th January 4 th February 9 th February: Birthdays between 5 th 11 th February Any birthdays taking place during half term between 12th 29th February will be celebrated when we return to school.

17 Friday 2 nd March Dressing up for World Book Day During the week beginning the 26th February, the school will be holding a Book Week to inspire the children to engage with a range of texts and to write with a purpose. This will coincide with World Book day which falls on Thursday 1st March this year. To celebrate this, we would like to invite the children to dress up as their favourite book character on Friday 2nd. If your children choose to participate, we request that they do not wear jeans or casual clothes but instead dress up as a character whose attire reflects the imaginative world of children s literature. We will be sharing these costumes in our assembly on Friday morning and will award prizes for the most creative costumes.

19 Super Camps at Royal Russell School Super Camps will be running Multi-Activity, RAW Outdoor Adventure and A Passion For LEGO courses for children at Royal Russell School during the school holidays February April May - 1 June 9 July - 24 August 2018 Super Camps' allows children to have a great time and get involved in some great activities and courses. As well as taking part in the fun-packed programme, children are cared for by fully qualified and vetted staff to create a thoroughly enjoyable time on camp. As Ofsted noted, Super Camps runs "an excellent programme of well-planned, fun and exciting activities that contributes highly to the children s play and learning environment". 20 If your child has signed up for the Restless triathlon please check your inboxes (including JUNK- Mrs Lloyd found hers there!) for the official registration and entry for the Restless Triathlon.

21 Please could we remind you that we have taken the decision that we will no longer be allowing children to bring in edible treats / cakes to celebrate their birthday at school. We have an increasing number of specific dietary requirements and severe food allergies within school that are resulting in increasing numbers of children missing out on these treats and the distribution of the treats / cakes being more complicated and time consuming. To link in with our current focus on Reading Cloud, we are suggesting that if your child would like to bring in a book as a gift, that would be greatly appreciated. They can then share the book with the class and it will then have a presentation label stuck in the front of the book before being added to our school Library. If you are in the Upper Juniors and you are looking for an inspiration for the book then please use Reading Cloud as this will tell you what books we already have in the Library and books your child might like.
