April 27th, 2017 Issue 10 Assistant Principal s Report Our Anzac Assembly invited guests enjoy morning tea with our School Leaders It is hard to believe we are already at the end of Week 2. Again, I hope everyone had a wonderful break over the Easter Holidays and I know I have no chocolate left in my house it lasted about two days! I am particularly excited this term, seeing as Term 2 is generally a term where students have settled nicely in to their routines and over the longer term, we see fantastic learning taking place. It is always pleasing to see students engaged and excited about their learning and often Nathan and I will get visits from students showing us work they are particularly proud of! ANZAC Day Service A HUGE thankyou to all the students, staff, parents and other members of our community who helped ensure our ANZAC Day Ceremony ran smoothly on Monday this week. The ANZAC Day tradition is an important part of Australian culture and it is wonderful that our whole school is able to pay their respect each year. It was also fantastic to see so many student (and parent) faces at the ANZAC Dawn Service at Coleman Park on Tuesday morning. Mrs Jackson and the KPS Choir did a fantastic job of singing the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems, as well as the song The Two Little Boys. The Scouts also did a wonderful job of providing everyone with warm drinks as well as egg and bacon sandwiches! Great job team! GRIP Leadership Last week on Tuesday 18 th April our School Captains (Sophie Enbom and Curtis Gardner), Vice Captains (Gracie Barlow and Harrison Clark) and Junior School Council Executives (Amber Sullivan and Cooper Smith) all attended the annual GRIP Leadership Conference at Korumburra Footy Club. There was a fantastic turnout with over 100 students from a number of different primary schools within the South Gippsland area. The conference was run by a group of talented individuals from Sydney who did an amazing job of keeping the students focussed and engaged for the entire day. There were many interactive activities along with a footy training session during the lunchbreak and a (Continued on page 2)

The students took a lot away from the day in regards to leadership, including their big picture ideas which I know they are keen to share through their Junior School Council meetings over the next term or so. We look forward to that! Lunchtime Clubs This term we have also introduced a number of new lunchtime clubs. Lunchtime Lounge will always run in the Library for the first half of lunch (all week) and now these clubs will run for the second half of lunch, helping cater for all our students here at KPS. Monday s club is Story Time in the Library. Tuesday s club is Gardening Club. Wednesday s club is Puzzle Club also in the Library. Thursday s club is Chess Club in the Library and finally Friday s club is Finish Off Friday also in the Library. These clubs will be an ongoing focus this year and we will check in at the end of term and see how the clubs have been attended. I know I am particularly looking forward to Chess Club with the upcoming annual Chess Tournament at the end of May. More information to come nearer the time! Breakfast Club A letter was sent home recently highlighting the fact that Breakfast Club is now running before school on Monday s, Tuesday s (a newly added day) and Wednesday s from 8.15am 8.50am. If you think your child would benefit from attending Breakfast Club, please contact the office and let us know. Breakfast Club is an initiative of the Victorian Government in partnership with Foodbank Victoria and we are very lucky to be able to provide this service to our local community. Compass As mentioned in a number of newsletters last term we will be using Compass for digital notifications to parents. We will not be using the Skoolbag app anymore. 3 Private Bag 1, Mine Road, Korumburra Telephone: Page 3 Junior Department News Welcome back to what is shaping up to be a very busy and exciting Term 2! We have already started two new morning activities and the children have been eager to learn more about them and become involved. One of these activities is our Action Stations program. This is a daily activity program where the children are in mixed groups, Prep Year 6 and participate in a variety of fun activities for 20 minutes. These are broken into the warm up, conditioning and cool down. The other activity is P.M.P. This is a Perceptual Motor Program that takes place in the Gym for half an hour each week and is run by Mrs Snooks with help from the teachers and many Parent helpers. The children rotate around five different activities that involve moving in different ways, balance and coordination. The children always enjoy the activities and are encouraged to continue their practise of introduced activities during our morning Investigations time. Kerrie McPherson Classroom Teacher

4 Private Bag 1, Mine Road, Korumburra Telephone: Page 4 P E News District Athletic Sports On Wednesday 3 rd May, 72 KPS students will be heading over to the Leongatha Velodrome to compete in various events for the Woorayl District Athletic Sports. We wish them all good luck. Could students please make sure they have returned their permission notes. Winter Sport Next week, Friday 5 th May, is the beginning of our Year 5/6 Winter Sport competition. On Friday we will be playing against Combined Registered. Some of the students will be travelling to St. Laurence O Toole PS in Leongatha while some students will go across the road to St Joseph s PS in Korumburra. The sports being played are netball, soccer, volleyball, t-ball, football and basketball. Games are scheduled for a 1.15pm start. House Cross Country The Annual House Cross Country is fast approaching and a note detailing the event will go out shortly. The date to put in your diaries is Thursday 25 th May. Those students who want to do well may like to start training now! Shelley Snooks P E Coordinator Music News It was a soggy cold April morning this Anzac Day in We gathered in the wee hours to pay our respects to those who allow us to live in the freedom in which we live today. Our KPS Singers, (aka choir) from Korumburra Primary School, gathered to represent our school and our community at this year s Dawn Anzac Day Service, commemorating the 102 nd Anniversary of our troops landing in Gallipoli. Our KPS Singers were outstanding in many ways, showing off their hard work throughout rehearsals in the weeks prior to our commemorative services. The staff and I were extremely proud of the way in which our students conducted themselves at our School Assembly and Dawn service. They not only sang to the best of their ability with tune, dynamics and understanding, but they demonstrated to the wider community a humble understanding of what Anzac Day represents for them and their fellow Australians. They are, and were all model citizens for their generation and the generations of KPS students to follow. Congratulations to all our students who braved the early, cold start for the Dawn Service, and for wanting to represent the school. Thank you to the parents for giving up your sleep-in in order to allow students to attend. It was lovely to have Mr Pirouet, Mr Wells and Mrs Snooks attend and offer support. Coming up in May The month of May is nominated as National Family Reading Month. To celebrate and nurture your child s love of reading it s a great time to turn off the telly and settle down together with a good book. The focus this year is on families reading aloud together. Also celebrated in May is National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) which will take place on Wednesday 24th May at 11:00am. NSS is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 17th year, it is a fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children s book that explores age-appropriate themes. NSS is held by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. In 2016 more than 520,000 children at over 3,500 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime. The story this year is The Cow Tripped Over the Moon written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood. There will be a reading of the story at 11:00am on the 24th in the Library. All welcome.
