1 Fortnightly Newsletter for Students & Families Achievement is outstanding because every student matters Ofsted 2013 Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to the Easter edition of our newsletter. We have 4 days left of this term, since we finish next Thursday 29th March and it feels as if we are racing already towards the summer holidays. I have recently enjoyed a fantastic Ormiston Academies Trust event in London to celebrate the achievements of our staff and students - was so proud to watch Shahd in Year 10 receive the much coveted Einstein award for her academic achievement and her work to become involved in politics to improve the quality of life for many. Mr Robinson, our Operations Assistant, also received the runner's up Chairman's Award for Social Action, presented by James Murray, for his excellent work both in school and in the community. We hope you enjoy the pictures of the event included in this edition. We have just reached the end of a very successful Open Classroom Week where teachers invite others in to watch them in action. If you follow us on Twitter, Facebook (or now Instagram) you will have seen some of the super work in progress. We ve been fortunate to host the Saint Felix scholarship interviews for Year 11 students from across the county this week, so good luck to those of you who applied! Next week, I will be talking to Year 10 regarding an exciting opportunity to study at Gresham s for Sixth Form. Thank you for your support of the academy - I m pleased to tell you that, according to the Local Authority, for the first time in the school s history we have a large waiting list for places for September! 6 Ormiston Academies Trust Awards 2018 Award Win For Ormiston Victory Academy Ormiston Victory Academy, part of Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), is celebrating following the success of student Shahd and Operations Assistant, Paul Robinson, at this year s Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT) Annual Awards. Year 10 student Shahd, won the Einstein Prize, sponsored by Capita, and Paul won runner-up for the prestigious Chairman s Social Action Staff award, sponsored by Ormiston Trust, after hundreds of nominations were submitted by OAT s 36 academies across the country. The Awards, now in their fourth year, recognise and celebrate the achievements of exceptional students and teachers from across the OAT network of academies, at an award ceremony in London. Year 10 student, Shahd, is an outstanding student who has shown exceptional enthusiasm and determination in embracing a huge range of opportunities at the academy. She has taken part in a mentoring programme at the academy and is currently involved in setting up a Youth Parliament group for students. She has also completed the Bronze STEMM Award, through her passion for science, and sat her BTEC Business exam two years early, achieving the highest mark ever awarded within department..

7 Operations Assistant, Paul Robinson, was named runner up for the prestigious Chairman s Social Action award. Paul plays an active role in engaging the students in St George s, which is the onsite alternative provision unit for students struggling with mainstream school. He set-up Robinson s Bike Shed, creating a workshop space on-site and forged links with the local police and businesses, who donated unwanted bicycles. He supports many local community events, and ensures that the academy is available for the community. The OAT Awards were hosted by BBC TV presenter, Michelle Ackerley, and the evening would not have been possible without the support of the award partners, who included Net Zero Buildings, Zurich Municipal, Onecom, Schools Broadband, Capita, TES, PLMR and Ginger Energy, Barker Associates, Eco Consulting, and OAT s founding body, Ormiston Trust. Principal at Ormiston Victory Academy, Naomi Palmer, said: Shahd and Paul are outstanding individuals who both make our school a better place to be each and everyday. They are integral members of our school community and are a credit to both Ormiston Victory Academy and OAT. We are delighted that their achievements have been recognised congratulations both. 8 This week saw the launch of the Leading Lights Sailing project in London, aboard HQS Wellington. Thank you to Mrs Cole, Mr Stevenson and Mr Robinson for taking the Year 10 girls to the special launch party to prepare them for their amazing experience aboard the tall ship in May. Look out for more exciting news to follow.

9 Year 11 We are very exciting to announce the date for the Class of 2018 s Prom on Thursday, 12 th July 2018 at Dunston Hall. We cannot wait to celebrate this extremely special occasion with our wonderful Year 11 students. Thank you to all of our wonderfully supportive families for attending our Year 11 Raising Achievement Evening this week. It is always a pleasure to meet with you and discuss your children's progress as well as how you can best support them through this busy time. We are running several Easter intervention sessions over the coming half term. Students have been given individual, personalised timetables to ensure they benefit as much as possible from this additional support. On Sunday, 3rd June we will be hosting an 9.30am until 3pm. We would love to invite parents, carers and family members to join us for the BBQ to celebrate the hard work of our Year 11s. The English Language Paper 1 follows this event on Tuesday, 5 th June, giving students a last opportunity to have support from their English teacher. The Mathematics BBQ will take place on Sunday, 10 th June from 9.30am until 3pm. Again, we would love to welcome carers and family members to join us for the BBQ to celebrate. The Mathematics Paper 3 follows this event on Tuesday, 12 th June. Both events are a crucial part of the academic year for our Year 11s and we hope that you can join us to celebrate the students hard work.

11 Victory Our fabulous Eco-council, working hard organising our recycling. We were proud to support Earth Hour this morning by turning off all unnecessary lights and electrical devices. Children In Need Macmillan Cancer Comic Relief Get Kids Going A huge thank you to all of you for brilliant fund-raising for charities this year: Teenage Cancer Trust - 34 Heart2Heart WWF UK Children's Trust Save The Children A huge thank you to Dance East for the amazing work at Victory over the past four weeks. Massive congratulations to our wonderful dancers and the boys and girls from Queen s Hill Primary School. A special thanks to all of the parents who came to support the performance.

12 SALAD Day and Open Classroom Week A productive game of Would you rather? with Year 7 in the library today Tu aimes le chocolat? French with no pens! During SALAD Day, students embraced all things speaking and listening, developing these two key skills. Pens were only permitted to self asses their progress throughout the day. A great way to learn Open Classroom week is a great way for colleagues to share good practice and for teachers to see how lessons are taught in different departments.

13 PE and Victory Well done to our first U13 Girls Rugby team - 3rd place in their first ever tournament! You are an inspiration! Super proud of our Year 8 football team winning the final of the schools cup! Well done to CAN - all boys played with really heart and determination all the way through! MOM: Lewis.
