I hope you are as excited as I am in terms of what this signifies Sacred Heart is a wonderful learning community in which to experience holistic learning. This is an important time in your children s lives and, by implication, their families as well when personal attributes, talents and inherent abilities are integrated with courses of study and broader learning experiences to lay the foundations of future vocational pathways and young adulthood. We the College Staff, the Marist Brothers, Sacred Heart families and Old Scholars continue to support and challenge our students to make the most of their talents and opportunities and to take these to the world beyond schooling so as to make it a better place for all! 4 Heritage and Mission O UR COLLEGE WAS ORIGINALLY FOUNDED at Port Adelaide in 1897 by Marist Brother, Br Stephen Debourg, and boasts one of the proudest traditions in education in South Australia. The Marist Brothers were founded in France by Saint Marcellin Champagnat in the early years of the nineteenth century. The Brothers were subsequently invited to establish schools in Australia, arriving in Sydney in As contemporary Marist educators, we share and continue Marcellin s dream of transforming the lives of young people, particularly the least favoured, by offering them an integrated education, both human and spiritual, based on a scholastic endeavour, mutual respect and a strong sense of community for one other. 6 A Place of Faith S ACRED HEART COLLEGE, since its inception, has been a place of hospitality and generosity. The staff and Brothers are dedicated to the College community as if it were their own family. With this attitude, they offer guidance and friendship in a spiritually Marist and Catholic environment. The Faith Formation Program involves retreats and reflection days, as well as other liturgical gatherings, and promotes openness with a sense of being together in a believing community. In such an environment and with the space to reflect on their own personal and communal growth, students are encouraged to develop into adulthood amid a community of faith. Studies in Religion provide structured opportunities for students to discuss matters of faith; values; social justice; the Marist charism and Catholic traditions. Regular Masses in the College Chapels, together with prayer and liturgies, afford the opportunity for students to reflect on and pray about their beliefs and values n The Staff and Brothers are as dedicated to the College as if it were their own family, and in this attitude, they offer guidance and friendship in a Marist Catholic environment.

8 College Curriculum Middle School S ACRED HEART COLLEGE MIDDLE SCHOOL provides a unique setting and educational experience for boys from Years 6 to 9. We believe that curriculum is holistic and generic, which means it encompasses all we do to support the academic, spiritual, social and emotional growth of our students. This is underpinned by strategies employed to cater for the needs of boys and their learning styles, and the needs of pre-adolescent and adolescent students in contemporary society. The Australian Curriculum provides the framework for our academic learning at the Middle School. It describes what young Australians should learn as they progress through schooling. It is the foundation for their future learning, growth and active participation in the Australian community. It sets out essential knowledge, understanding, skills and capabilities and provides a national standard for student achievement in core learning areas. The Middle School boasts amazing teaching facilities for teaching boys, including wide open oval spaces, technology centres, state-of-the art science labs and a first class learning and teaching resource centre. Our most important and valued resource is the staff, who are passionate about teaching boys of this age group. A consolidated Master Plan will inform continued facility development over the next decade n

11 College Curriculum Senior School T HE SCHOOL CONTINUES TO RESPOND to the changing needs of society and offers a broad-based curriculum. Students individual needs are met through the principles of enterprise, partnership and co-responsibility. All students undertake the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) and, as the Senior School is one of the largest senior secondary schools in Adelaide, it has a wide range of subjects which qualify for entry to University or TAFE, in addition to an ever-increasing range of options in vocational education training (VET) programs. Academically capable students are encouraged to accelerate their studies and enrol for University subjects whilst still at school. The Extension Studies Program at Flinders University provides a taste of University life for high-achieving South Australian senior secondary school students, while also giving the opportunity for Sacred Heart students to complement and extend their SACE. An ongoing commitment to strategic curriculum planning allows the school to be cognizant of, and responsive to, contemporary social trends, educational needs, vocational options, improved academic excellence and learning environments inclusive of all students. A diverse range of subjects across the major curriculum areas is offered through the learning areas of: Religious Education, English and Languages, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, Cross-Disciplinary Studies, the Arts, Technology, and Humanities and Social Sciences. Sacred Heart students also enrol in the Adelaide University Headstart Program. Once the University of South Australia establishes its course, our students will be encouraged to consider this as yet another option to expand their learning horizons! Ongoing engagement with post-compulsory schooling has Sacred Heart College continues its collaboration with Marymount College, a local Catholic girls school from Years 6 to 9 especially in regard to curriculum. Sacred Heart College Senior School is the preferred pathway for the Marymount College students a practice dating back to 1977 n enabled the Senior School to provide contemporary and expansive technology, hospitality, scientific and learning resource facilities. The Br Stephen Debourg Performing Arts Centre is one of the finest Performing Arts Centres in South Australia. A consolidated Master Plan guides the development of facilities that will respond to the changing demands of curriculum over the next ten years.

12 Boarding at Sacred Heart College S ACRED HEART COLLEGE ENROLLED the first boarders in 1905, so the boarding school has been synonymous with the school for over 100 years. Currently, boarding accommodation is offered for girls and boys, Years Whilst most boarders attend the Senior School (Years 10 12), a number of places for boarders in Years 7, 8 and 9 are available at the associated middle school, Marymount College, Hove, for girls; and Sacred Heart Middle School, Mitchell Park, for boys. The boarding community at Sacred Heart College adds great richness and diversity to the life of the school. The College is able to provide access to choices and opportunities that are not always available or easily accessed in rural areas or small country schools. Since 1998, the College has enrolled both girls and boys in the Boarding House, which provides modern, family style facilities for all of the boarders. Families value the opportunity to send both their daughters and sons to the same school. The boarding culture is an important part of Sacred Heart College s identity and tradition. Many of the boarders have parents who were educated at Sacred Heart so there is a strong sense of family involvement with the school. The welfare of the boarders is the special responsibility of the staff who administer and service the boarding house. Through dedicated care and attention, they have established a supportive Christian environment where each person is welcomed and feels part of a large family n

14 We assist students by nurturing their recreational and leisure interests, in order to provide an individual framework for each student to maintain a well balanced and committed outlook that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

15 Beyond the Classroom B EYOND THE CLASSROOM, students from Year 6 to Year 12, are provided with opportunities to learn that life involves respect for others and that teamwork enables the benefits of cooperative endeavor to be shared with fellow students. Students can pursue a wide variety of recreational and leisure interests, in order to provide a wellbalanced and committed outlook that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Sacred Heart College has an enviable extra-curricular tradition that supports sports, music, drama and the arts. Students may choose from a wide range of activities including: athletics, badminton, basketball, choirs, bands, cricket, cycling, debating, drama, football, hockey, netball, Remar (Marist youth program), rugby, soccer, social justice, surfing, swimming, tennis, touch football, volleyball, water polo and wine making. A long-standing sporting and cultural exchange exists between schools from other states a tradition begun in The Assumption College Kilmore Exchange is a much anticipated annual event since All these activities contribute to create a family spirit that is unique to the College, one which emerges as a commitment to community enterprise and school spirit by staff, students, parents and Old Collegians n

Since 1978, Sacred Heart College Senior has been the only Catholic coeducational senior school (Years 10 12) in South Australia The mutually respectful relationships between staff and students often develop into life-long friendships that provide cherished memories of time spent at school. This is very much the Marist Way! n and it is uniquely suited to the task of preparing young women and men as adults of faith, hope, audacity, vision and compassion. Sacred Heart College Middle is the only all-boys (Years 6-9) school in South Australia. The school was founded in 1967, and since then has strived to provide educational opportunities for boys that are inclusive, student-centred, holistic and contemporary. With the integration of faith and life; the College aims for students, to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active contributors to the world. Staff encourage students to develop their individual gifts and talents; to see that personal achievement is worth striving for and that sensitivity to others is a sign of maturity. 18 A Family Spirit S ACRED HEART COLLEGE possesses a sense of family spirit that spans several generations. This spirit finds expression in many ways: in the cooperative approach of students willing to help and care for each other; in the willingness of parents to help at parent and sporting functions; and in the dedication of teachers who generously assist their students beyond the scheduled classes. Old scholars feel welcome here when they return, as they often do for weddings in the school chapel, cultural and sporting events, or just to say hello. A sense of belonging is created through the coeducational boarding facilities and by involvement in the pastoral structures of the College system. Each student belongs to a House and has the opportunity to identify with its ethos. This enables students across year levels to consolidate friendships as they meet for Homeroom activities, Houses and class Masses, sporting carnivals, socials and many other activities, which vary across Years 6 to 12. Student involvement with a range of social outreach initiatives, and both local and overseas mission immersion experience programs, help to expand their understanding of and response to the marginalised in society, which Old scholars feel welcome here when they return, as they often do for weddings in the school chapel, sporting events, or just to say hello. further expands their world view n
