2 HEADMASTER S INTRODUCTION Auckland Grammar School s history as a sporting School stretches back to the beginning of the 20th Century. Through time its reputation has been enhanced by the School s performance and the relationships it has forged with like-minded schools. Grammar s extensive sporting history is recorded through photographs and Honours Boards of individual and team achievements. These are shared with the Grammar boys of today, as they hang on the walls of the Great Hall, the Old Boys Pavilion and the Sports Centre. Sport at Grammar is an integral part of School life and a young man s development. We aim to reinforce the School s academic imperatives, philosophy and mission while fostering a sense of sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership and pride in performance through competing as a member of the Grammar community. Opportunities are provided for all young men through the range and number of teams which represent the School in a variety of codes; from a social level through to Premier teams. We continue to develop and better our sporting facilities for the daily use of our young men. Our current sporting facilities include a water-based artificial hockey turf, a state of the art indoor sports centre, squash courts, three pavilions, a gymnasium, a practice turf for various codes, international artificial rugby/football turf, two well prepared grass wickets for our Senior Cricket teams, artificial and grass cricket nets and six artificial turf tennis courts - all located here on site at Grammar. These facilities are augmented by access to off campus resources such as Venturelodge, the School s Outdoor Education Centre in Ohakune. Many sporting codes have developed strong international links, making tours an integral part of School life. Examples include, in recent years, Cricket and Hockey teams touring South Africa and Australia, and Hockey also toured The Netherlands, Belguim and Scotland, while Rugby and Football have visited South America, UK and Australia. Our Rowers have attended the Henley Rowing Regatta in the UK and the Distance Squad has twice competed in the USA over the past five years. Last summer our Water Polo Team and Cricket Team competed in Australia, while the Distance Squad toured California in April. The active involvement of staff in our sports programme is extraordinary, and is one of the main reasons for the success many teams experience. Without such strong support from our staff we simply could not offer the variety and quality of sport that currently exists in our sports programme. Parental help is also very much appreciated and welcomed. We look forward to your contributions to sport at Auckland Grammar School. Our Director of Sports Development, Mr David Askew, oversees and leads sport at Grammar. He will be ably supported by our Head of Sport, Mr David Mackay. Do communicate with them if you have specific questions about our sporting programmes. Tim O Connor Headmaster 1
3 SPORT Auckland Grammar School holds academia as its priority for all young men in its care. Throughout history the School has recognised that extracurricular activities are an important part to a young man s personal development. The extracurricular life of the School is essential to our mission as we aim to develop well-rounded young men who willingly exhibit the School s values, while contributing in a variety of contexts in and outside our gates. Our sporting environment aims to cater for the diverse and changing School community through the provision of a variety of sporting activities. The School, where possible, will offer sport for students of all ability levels, as well as the provision of Premier sports teams for students seeking excellence in sport. In 2016, Auckland Grammar School had eight Old Boys competing at the Rio Olympics held in Brazil. This representation of Old Boys competing on the world stage is something the School is immensely proud of and serves as a great source of inspiration for our current students. New students to the School will soon realise the importance of tradition and the significant contributions that have been made by so many young men who have come before them. It is our intention to ensure these traditions of the past are upheld by the next generation of Grammar boys as they attempt to leave their mark on our School during their time here. One of these traditions occurs during our full School assembly every morning and is known as crossing stage. The first student to cross stage and receive the School s congratulations every year is the Head Boy. Thereafter, a number of students will be recognised for their efforts through the crossing stage ceremonies throughout the year in a variety of capacities. It should be a goal of every student here to cross stage at some point during their Grammar education so that the School can recognise their achievement and share in their success. If you have any queries regarding sport, there are numerous noticeboards around the School with frequently updated information on the sports we offer. All trial dates and meeting times will be communicated in our school assemblies each morning. You may alternatively wish to visit the School website or speak with me, Mr Askew, the Director of Sports Development or alternatively Mr Mackay, Head of Sport. Above all else, students are encouraged to immerse themselves in the extracurricular life of the School and enjoy their secondary school years. In our 148th year, we are extremely grateful for the contributions previous Grammar students have made to enhance our School. This responsibility now falls on your shoulders as the next generation of Grammar students. David Askew Director of Sports Development 2
