1 WELCOME On behalf of the Ryan Catholic College community, I extend a very warm welcome to the students, staff, parents and supporters who have travelled to our wonderful city, Townsville, for the 2018 QISSN carnival. We are delighted to be hosting this year s competition. Of course a carnival of this size does not just happen. The organising committee led by Elena Allen and assisted by so many are to be congratulated for their commitment in making the week both enjoyable and rewarding. I also take this opportunity to thank the many sponsors, school personnel, parents and supporters for their commitment and expertise with the 64 competing teams. I extend to all competitors my best wishes for the carnival. I hope that you will gain much from the experience and from the competition itself. Mia Hamm, a retired American professional soccer player once said, Somewhere behind the athlete you ve become and the hours of practice and the coaches who have pushed you is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back... play for her. Enjoy the carnival, the friendships and the experiences that lay ahead. David McNeale (Principal Ryan Catholic College) 2018 QISSN CARNIVAL 1

2 QISSN WELCOME 2018 On behalf of QUEENSLAND INDEPENDENT SECONDARY SCHOOLS NETBALL, I welcome you to the 19th Carnival held in Townsville in 2018, so generously hosted by Ryan Catholic College. Our special congratulations and appreciation must go to David McNeale, Principal of Ryan Catholic College, Elena Allen, QISSN Administrative Coordinator and all the College staff and community, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that this carnival is a premier sporting event and the highlight of the sporting year for many of the 64 Colleges involved. We are thrilled to be able to increase the number of schools who can participate to 64, making it really the premiere secondary school netball competition in Queensland. Ryan Catholic College has fully supported and extended the spirit, fair play and comradeship of the carnival! I sincerely thank Evie Teasdale for her dedication, commitment, efficiency and skills in her role as Executive Officer of QISSN. I would also acknowledge the tremendous work of Umpire Director Christopher Robinson in making all flow well. We are very pleased to have Netball Queensland, the Firebirds and Sunshine Coast Lightning supporting us in the development of netball pathways. Our executive committee have spent many hours to ensure the smooth operation of the QISSN Carnival I wish to also thank Dan McMahon, Julie Atkins and Debbie Newton for their tireless commitment. 4 HISTORY OF QISSN The QISSN (Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball) Carnival, 2018 enters its nineteenth year as a netball carnival held annually in the first week of the mid-year holidays. The inaugural QISSN Carnival was hosted by Shalom College, Bundaberg in 2000 with a modest 16 teams. Due to the ever-increasing popularity of our carnival, in late 2016 the QISSN Executive made the decision to further develop and expand the carnival from 48 to 60 teams a bold and courageous move in the pursuit of promoting and developing secondary school netball in Queensland. This year the carnival will further expand to 64 teams. This sees our membership grow from 480 school-girl participants to 640 young women, in addition to Coaching and Managing, Umpiring, Coordinating, First Aid and Executive staff; making our QISSN Carnival one of the biggest school-based carnivals in the country. The richness of QISSN s history is evident in its success and growth as a popular carnival for secondary school girls. Other measures of its prosperity include the fact that many of the schools that competed in the inaugural carnival will be attending the 2018 carnival for the nineteenth successive year, a true measure of the longevity, commitment and enjoyment of carnival. Regular member schools cite the atmosphere of the carnival and the spirit in which games are contested as characteristics that excite schools about participating in this annual competition. Over 6,000 girls have participated in QISSN in its previous 18 carnivals, with a number of previous participants including; Lara Nilsson, Clairvaux Mackillop College, Candice Adams, Marymount College Ameliaranne Wells, St Luke s Anglican School Gemma Mimi, Carmel College going on to represent the Queensland Firebirds in the national netball competition, post school saw the introduction of securing Ms Vicky Wilson OAM and Ms Tracy Bruce both involved previously in State and National team selections, development and coaching; as official selectors for the All Stars and Rising Stars teams. We are very fortunate to have secured Vicky and Tracy as selectors again for this year s carnival and they look forward to identifying the future stars and representatives of our great game! This year, Ryan Catholic College, Townsville will host the nineteenth QISSN Carnival. We welcome the 64 teams that will compete for the QISSN Cup and hope the 2018 carnival continues the fine tradition established in previous years. We thank our many previous and new sponsors for their support and look forward to forging continued partnerships in the pursuit of growth, recognition and excellence in women s sport. 64 MERCY COLLEGE Mackay It s called boxing above your weight. The old adage about taking on a level of competition beyond what you should be able to cope with. Going out there and taking on opposition much stronger than you and not thinking for a moment about the likelihood of coming second. 99 ST THOMAS MORE COLLEGE Sunnybank Founded in 1974, ST THOMAS MORE COLLEGE, presented Queensland Catholic Education with a radical alternative approach to schooling based on the model of pastoral Care. Today the early practices of Behaviour Management and Curriculum are regarded as mainstream educational practices. Situated on 5.08 hectares with classrooms set amongst trees on the gentle north-western hillside, the College has undergone tremendous growth in the past 5 years and has reached a population of over 950 students and 100 staff in The founding principles of gospel values, intellectual reason, free will, good conscience, integrity and courage are at the heart of the College Mission. These founding principals have enabled the college to become a vibrant faith, learning and teaching community. Our Patron, St Thomas More, could not in all good conscience sign an oath before God that he knew to be false. He refused to accept the false reason of a wealthy and powerful king (Henry VIII). He had the courage to stand by his convictions, he maintained the integrity of his position and ultimately, he died under a false charge of perjury rather than sign an oath he knew to be false. St Thomas More s message is particularly relevant in today s world which is dominated by intellect, reason and uncertainty about integrity and truth. The College has enjoyed our association and involvement with QISSN since 2005 and we look forward to many more competitions in the future. 1. Luisa Sekona (Captain) 2. Jessica Dawson (Co-Captain) 3.
