4 School Overview St Agnes School was registered as a school in 1951 and was located in a hall in Worthing Road, Highett. Temporary classrooms were located on the present site in 1952 and the main school building established in The school was further developed between the years , with a wing added in Refurbishment took place in 1986 and in A re-locatable classroom was added to the site to cope with an increasing demand for enrolment. In 1999 and 2000 the classrooms and administration block underwent extensive refurbishment. In 2002/2003, the grounds were also upgraded, with re-seeding of the grass areas and re-surfacing and line marking of play areas. Until 1983 the school was administered under the leadership of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Since 1983 the school has been under the educational leadership of lay principals. The school is located on a hectare of land bound by four neighbouring streets. The enclosed site includes the school, the parish centre, church and tennis courts. The physical dynamics of the parish complex thus contribute to a real sense of community. St Agnes School comprises a diverse school community. Students come from a range of social and cultural backgrounds and Highett remains an area that is undergoing change with many new families moving into the area and the rebuilding of residential housing. We see the diversity of our families as our greatest asset. St Agnes has a current enrolment of about 198 students however 2011 saw an enrolment of 164 students was a year of fully utilising our new buildings and facilities and a strong focus on building the technology infrastructure of St Agnes. School Improvement and Annual Action Plan Our School Improvement Plan is comprises of the 5 spheres: Education in the Faith Learning and Teaching Student Wellbeing Leadership and Management 2011 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY PAGE 3

5 Principal s Report We began the 2011 school year with 164 students. Our enrolment in 2012 has grown just under 200 which is a manageable number of students for our facilities. The school has completed a major building program which allowed for some expansion of the student population. This includes an Information Services Unit (ISU) that incorporates a new classroom and a St Agnes Community hall. During 2011 we continued to maintain and develop the grounds at St Agnes school expanding learning and recreational areas and improving the presentation in many ways. Environmental sustainability has continued to be a major focus in 2011 with the maintenance of vegetable gardens, composting, solar panels and water tanks. The students engaged in units of work linked to environmental sustainability was also a year of School Review for St Agnes. This process, which occurs in Catholic schools every four years, involved the students, staff, Parish Priest and parent community in highlighting strengths, challenges and future directions. The School Review was instrumental in defining our priorities for 2012 as well as celebrating our achievements, particularly those relating to our students. The programs that we offered at St Agnes in 2011 included Religious Education, which permeates the whole curriculum, including Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Physical Education, Italian, Literacy support, Student Services support and psychological services. Students benefited by many lunchtime programs run by staff and parents and there was also the opportunity for students to undertake instrumental music lessons at school through an outside source. We aim to fulfil our Vision by providing a quality and comprehensive education which will allow children to achieve their personal best. Parents are important partners in their children s education and many parents were involved in initiatives from our active Education Board and Parents and Friends Association in Funds were raised to purchase new furniture, educational supplies, computers, printers, cameras, video equipment and books for the library, take home reading and for guided reading. The staff at St Agnes are committed to facilitating a curriculum that enables children to be resourceful, independent and inquiring people who are able to think and reflect on their learning. We constantly measure our performance against our Vision and Annual Action Plan which sets high standards for us as Catholic Educators. Our Vision is regularly reviewed as our guide and focus. I would like to thank Rosemary Beadle, our Deputy Principal, with whom I work very closely and whose support is greatly valued by me and the staff. Thank you to the staff for their connection with the students and families. I would like to thank the Education Board who have advised wisely and keep the focus on the students and the needs of the school. The Parents and Friends have continued their valuable support in their fundraising and 2011 was quite a successful year. Finally I would like to thank Fr. Blake for his guidance in faith, interest and support up to his retirement in April His contributions have helped to make St Agnes a wonderful community. We welcomed Fr Vincent John in April 2011 and he continues to support the school and parish in our St Agnes community. Andrew Butler Principal 2011 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY PAGE 4

6 School Education Board Report I would like to thank all the Board members for their contribution and commitment to the St. Agnes Education Advisory Board for I would also like to thank our Principal Andrew Butler and our Assistant Principal Rosemary Beadle for their leadership, advice and good humour during the year. The Year of 2011 Once again the school year has brought many changes and challenges, the largest this year was the School Review led by reviewer John Renowden and involving all of the school community as well as the Education Board. We again spent time discussing a variety of educational issues, ratifying policies and contributing to decisions regarding the school. As a board we discussed issues such as: The revised report form, and the parents responses to it. We decided to reissue an opinion survey about the changed report form on the basis that the initial survey was only returned by a small number of families. The response to the second survey was much greater, and mainly positive, allowing us to see that the alterations made to the report form at the end of 2010 had been seen as a positive change by the parents. The school instrumental program, it s positives and negatives, and deciding to continue with the program in Continued discussion on the Performance and Development Culture for staff, and its continued implementation in the school, under the four areas of : induction for new staff, multiple sources of feedback, individual performance and development plans and quality professional learning. The new Library Policy, Plan and Procedures Handbook (a very impressive document) being ratified The fact that we will have two prep classes for 2012 and the dilemma of moving classrooms in 2012 in order to fit the extra class in. It was decided that the room divider in the new Library/Technology area above the hall would be used to create a new learning space. The Complaints Resolution Procedure for the St. Agnes School Community draft copy being tabled, discussed and some changes recommended. An increase in school fees per family, book levy and excursion levy ratified A change to the school sacramental program to Reconciliation in Year 3, First Eucharist in Year 4 and Confirmation every second year for Year 5/6 meaning there will not be any year level with two sacraments in the one year. Proposed Class Timetable Changes for 2012, with the benefits and challenges being considered. The School Review process is a time consuming and demanding and much of the burden falls to the principal and the staff as they prepare for the review, they obviously did a great job, the final report from John Renowden the reviewer was, overall, very positive about the school, there were only a few suggestions on areas for improvement. Thank you to Dale Sheppard and Tony Vlahandreas for giving more of their time as board members to assist in the review process. As a board we were pleased to see the opening of the beautiful new learning space and see how well it has been utilised this year after all of last year s work and setbacks. As a part of our involvement with the parish we saw wonderful celebrations for the 60 th Anniversary of the parish and of course our sad but lovely farewell to Fr. Blake. We welcomed our new parish priest Father Vincent John ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY PAGE 5

7 We also worked with the Parents and Friends who have once again done a fantastic job organising our fantastic fete and other fund raising activities such as chocolate drives and raffles and also the special events for the parents and children such as Father s Day breakfast, Fun Lunches School Disco and Bollywood night and as a board we would like to thank all of them, but particularly the hard working committee, sincerely for all their wonderful work. Finally thank you to everyone on the Education Board for giving up their time, for their calm good sense, for their ability to listen to others points of view, for their good humour and for making it easy to chair the meetings. Thank you for sharing your valued opinion and please don t under estimate your contribution to this committee, the community and the school. Thank you especially to those who attended the Prep information evening and helped welcome our new parents to the school, it was another lovely evening and we met many new and enthusiastic parents, some of whom will hopefully join the board in the future. A special thank you to those board members who are retiring this year Kathleen O Dowd and Hanni Alston, thank you for your valuable input and for contributing so much of your time and energy to our school community at St. Agnes. Thank you too to those of you who are staying on in Thank you again to Andrew and Rosemary for all their support, well done to everyone on a great year. 9 Learning & Teaching Goals & Intended Outcomes To develop best practice in learning and teaching through collaborative learning, support and responsibility. To ensure that learning and teaching is focused and responsive to students learning needs. To ensure a consistent implementation and planning for Inquiry Learning through VELS. To develop new and improved ways for the use of ICT with resources, planning and teaching. Achievements PROPORTION OF STUDENTS MEETING THE MINIMUM STANDARDS IN YEARS 3 & 5 NAPLAN TESTS changes changes YEAR 3 READING 100% 100% 0.0% 100% 0.0% YEAR 3 WRITING 100% 100% 0.0% 100% 0.0% YEAR 3 SPELLING 94.1% 95.8% +1.7% 95.5% - 0.3% YEAR 3 GRAMMAR & PUNCTUATION 100% 91.7% -8.3% 100% + 8.3% YEAR 3 NUMERACY 94.1% 100% +5.9% 100% 0.0% YEAR 5 READING 95.5% 93.8% - 1.7% 100% + 6.2% YEAR 5 WRITING 95.5% 100% +4.5% 100% 0.0 % YEAR 5 SPELLING 95.7% 93.8% -1.9 % 100% +6.2% YEAR 5 GRAMMAR & PUNCTUATION 95.7% 93.8% - 1.9% 100% +6.2% YEAR 5 NUMERACY 100% 100% 0.0% 100% 0.0% The above tables suggests that in most areas of comparative performance in NAPLAN tests there have been statistical gains in the proportion of students achieving minimum standard or better or at least maintenance of previous high figures, with only a small number of areas suggesting a decline in figures. Figures show stronger growth in results in Year 3 Numeracy and year 5 Writing but we must also be aware that student ability within cohorts can have an effect upon results as can the size of the cohort. 19 Future Directions The St Agnes Vision Statement, the School Improvement Framework (SIP) and the Annual Action Plan cohesively target specific goals. These goals are aligned with the Five Spheres of education developed by the Catholic Education Office. We have streamlined our goals for The five spheres of education at St Agnes School are Education in Faith, Learning and Teaching, Student Wellbeing, Leadership and Management and School Community. All future directions relate to these spheres. Future directions lie embedded in the context of faith development in our school and parish community. We aim to continue to build excellent relationships with the Parish and our parish Priest Fr Vincent John who joined us in April The students have an excellent perception of Catholic culture and we wish to maintain this and further enhance staff and parental understandings in this area. St Agnes is a school that places a great emphasis on our school community relationships and teaching and learning. As a result, future directions lie firmly in continued professional development, particularly in teaching and learning. St Agnes is building upon effective learning resources and teaching strategies. We will engage in the Performance and Development Culture and its elements that are connected to our over arching goal of school improvement. Effective professional development is integrated into planning processes that utilise the skills of colleagues in working together in a team environment. This is designed to consolidate student engagement and foster learning. The use of data to inform learning and future teaching directions is paramount. Staff will continue to learn how to interpret data to assist in future teaching directions. Staff will become involved in modelling good teaching methods to share expertise. There will continue to be an emphasis on empathy (supportive leadership). Our new school website will be operational in 2012 and we look forward to this being an effective communication tool. We look forward to developing a Master Plan to assist with our buildings and rising enrolments. Environmental sustainability will continue to be a major focus in the school and will as we expand upon the utilisation of solar panels, waste reduction, recycling, energy saving measures and biodiversity through the construction of vegetable gardens and compost bins. We will continue our journey in becoming a 5 star Sustainable School. We aim to continue to build upon links with the school and wider community through special events, projects, visitors, excursions and charitable works. There will be an emphasis on building parental understandings of parent input, focused learning, reporting and transitions from kindergarten to primary school and primary school to secondary school. Extracurricular activities such as our school concert will build a sense of community and connectedness. Finally, by developing and fostering healthy relationships between students, staff, parents and the wider community, St Agnes will continue to be A Vibrant and Faith and Learning Community ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY PAGE 18
