It has been difficult with the rain and the lack of spaces undercover at recess, but the students and teachers have coped really well. It has been another busy week at the campus with a focus on our indigenous community and a number of activities being held to celebrate NAIDOC week. In addition, we have also ended the week with the soccer team competing in the state championships last Friday evening. Friday evening saw our soccer players represent the campus in the state Primary School championships. Having made it to the final eight, our team won their quarter final against Mindarie before facing South Coast Baptist College (a specialist soccer school) in the semifinal. Unfortunately, we lost the game, ending our chances. However, what a great performance from all our players who tried their best and were outstanding ambassadors for the campus. I was lucky enough to be there and was very proud of all our players and their efforts. It was great to see all the parents who came along to support the children and cheer them along. Congratulations to our players, and thank you to all the parents who were able to come along to support them. Thank you in particular to Mr Brooks for all his efforts and to Mr Smeed and Mrs London for their support on Friday. Our Year 1 & 2 students enjoyed the Bush Tucker activities on Monday, in which they learnt a lot about traditional foods that you can get from the local flora and fauna, as well as information explaining the methods of gathering and preparing the food. On Friday, the school was fortunate to welcome our aboriginal visitors who began the day with a traditional smoking ceremony before involving all our students in a variety of activities, from using boomerangs to face painting whilst learning a great deal about traditional aboriginal culture and history. Thank you so much to our visitors and to Mrs Boyling for all her hard work in preparing and coordinating the event. This week we celebrate Science across the campus with a number of activities, beginning with incursions yesterday and today, and culminating with some rocket launching on the oval this afternoon. I am sure that will be both informative and exciting, with our students looking forward to the activity. Science is a very important part of both our curriculum and of course our society, in which it has a crucial role to play. Thanks to Mrs Davey for her work in coordinating and planning these events. Our cross country runners travel to Willetton today to compete in the Interschool Cross Country carnival this morning and I wish them all the best. They have been training hard and running around the school at recess and lunch and I am sure they will do very well. Thanks again to Mr Brooks and Mrs London for their work and support of the students. Go Rivo! Our victorious Eagles Cup AFL team were visited yesterday by Brad Sheppherd from the West Coast Eagles who presented the team with the shield for 2018! It was great to see an elite AFL player at our school presenting the shield, talking to the students and happily answering questions asked by our boys. Congratulations to the team, thanks to Mr Brooks for organizing the presentation and finally thank you to the West Coast Eagles and Brad Sheppherd for their support. Our school has a brilliant choir who have been practising and working very hard as a team in preparation for their performance at the Perth Arena this coming Friday night (17 th August). Mr Davey has been working very closely with our choristers to make sure that they put on a great show and sing well. Given their determination and talent, I am sure they will do really well, and I wish them luck. Thanks to Mr Davey for his hard work and coordination of the choir and the event. Parents are reminded that the annual Open Night is being held at the school next Wednesday evening (22 nd August) from 5.00pm until 7.00pm. All our rooms will be open for students and their parents to visit, take a look at the student work on display and enjoy the snapshot of our programs across the campus. I look forward to seeing everyone there. It is part of our annual Book Week which runs all next week, culminating in the costume parade on Friday 24 th with a theme of pirates. I am sure many students will be keen to dress up and enjoy the day.

Thank you to everyone who wore a beanie and supported our fundraiser be donating a gold coin. We raised $ The event was a big success and we thank you again for your participation. Praneeath Head Boy Freo Footy Skills Final Last Sunday our Year 5 boys competed in the Freo Footy Skills Final at Optus Stadium. Congratulations to Mitchell, Jimmy, Ricardo, Josh, Mitchell and Noriaki for winning the Year 5 Boys Freo Fastball Competition. Congratulations to Mitchell and Josh for also winning the Year 5 Boys Freo Kwick Kick Competition. Eagles Cup Champions Yesterday we had a visit from Brad Sheppard (West Coast Eagles). Brad came to present the shield to the players who were undefeated in this year s Eagles Cup Competition. Brad presented the students with certificates, answered some questions and took a photo with the players. Faction Athletics Carnival There are quite a few students saying that they will not be participating in this year s carnival. If your child is not going to be participating, could you please send a note to Mr Brooks as soon as possible. The carnival will be held on Wednesday the 5 th of September and the 7th of September (Reserve Day is Thursday the 6th of September). Little Athletics After School Clinic Riverton Little Athletics Club is happy to be in a partnership with Riverton Primary again this year. We will be offering an Athletics Clinic after school in the run up to the Faction Athletics Carnival. The clinic will be held over 2 sessions on Fridays (the 24th and 31st of August), from 3:30pm to 4:30pm and will be on site at Riverton PS. The clinic is open to all students from Years 3 to 6 and would be a great opportunity to brush up on athletic skills in time for the carnival. A gold coin donation would be welcome! All sessions will be run by our Coaches Jack, Eve and Carly. 3 To celebrate Languages Week 2018 our senior students experienced a traditional calligraphy lesson using ink and brushes. The focus character for 2018 was 北 which means north. Congratulations to Ammar Rizvi and Serhan Sadeq who will have the entries entered into the JLTAWA inter school competition at the end of this month. Successful semi finalists included Emma, Matthew, Janelle, Asher, Zhumin, Jessica, Kayla, Kayleigh, Rylee, Nura, Jimmy, Zara and John. Book week is fast approaching. Our theme for this year is Find Your Treasure. We are very fortunate to have a local West Australian author visit us for 2 days. Students from years 1-6 will have the opportunity to meet Norman Jorgensen and enjoy his passion for children s books, literature and our beautiful state. Notes regarding this visit have been distributed today. $3.00 IS PAYABLE AT THE SCHOOL OFFICE. Dress up day is Friday 24th August and our theme is Pirates, Treasure or your favourite book character. 4 With swimming pools and beaches a big part of the Western Australian lifestyle, ensuring your children can swim competently and safely is essential. You can now enrol your children in VacSwim swimming lessons during the October and December/January school holidays. VacSwim is for all children - from beginners to more advanced swimmers and young people doing their Bronze Medallion. Your children can start as young as five years old. Your children can join in the fun of learning to swim at pools and open water venues across the State. Enrol your children in VacSwim now at education.wa.edu.au/swimming Following a very successful season for our inaugural girls cricket team we are trying to establish an under 13s and an under 15s girls team for the upcoming season. Any girls who want to play will be made very welcome and will be able to play in a girls only team. We have an excellent coach and are really hoping to establish a sustainable girls squad. 8 Selected Triple P (Seminar Series) FREE PARENTING SEMINARS Managing children s behaviour can be challenging at times for most parents. Parents are invited to attend free parenting seminars being offered this term to learn practical, positive and effective ways to deal with common behavioural problems, and ways to help your child achieve their best at school and in the future. What is Triple P? Triple P is a parenting program, but it doesn t tell you how to be a parent. It s more like a toolbox of ideas you choose the strategies you need and the way you want to use them. It s all about making Triple P work for you. Why Selected Triple P? The three seminars offer simple and practical strategies to help you confidently manage your children s behaviour, prevent problems developing, and to build strong, healthy relationships. For who? Triple P is currently run in 25 countries and has been shown to work in all kinds of family structures. Selected Triple P is for every parent who has a child between 2 and 12 years old. Seminars are FREE and will be presented at Riverton Primary Campus Staff Room during Term 3, 2018 by Karen Nelson (School Psychologist) and Robyn Brown (School Nurse). You can attend one, two, or three of the seminars. Seminar 1 The Power of Positive Parenting Topics include the principles of positive parenting, realities of raising children, and parenting challenges, such as managing behaviour.
