Lots of travel, lots of great educational life experiences and hopefully lots of rest and relaxation. Welcome back to a new term, one that promises to fill the lives of our students with wonderful experiences, and possibly leave our teachers a little tired! More sad news arrives, as we are now losing another teacher, with Mrs Lisa Levick leaving at the end of this week. The school has been so lucky to have Mrs Levick over the past few years, and the students who have had the chance to learn and grow in her classroom have been very lucky. Mrs Levick has been a huge asset to our school, and has had a big influence on many aspects of our school systems. Mrs Levick will be moving out to the Parkes/Dubbo area, taking a classroom teacher position in a school out there. We will miss you! 5L will be taught by Mr Daniel Moore for the remainder of Mr Moore is very enthusiastic about taking over this great class, and has had experience working in many schools across the lower Hunter. We wish him all the best. There has been a re-structure within the Department of Education, which sees the Singleton Learning Community, including Singleton Heights Public School, now being located in a Principal s Network called Upper Hunter. The new Director of Public Schools for this network is Mr Sean Andrews. Mr Andrews will be visiting the school on Thursday, meeting and greeting our staff and students over a few hours. The school will now work under the operational directorate called Rural North. Sports Stars Our sporting success in Term 1 has carried through on the rugby league field, with Cooper Meldrum and Ryan Jurkans both being selected in the Hunter region rugby league team that will contest the state PSSA trials in Mudgee on June. This is an amazing achievement and these boys deserve huge recognition in getting this far. We wish them all the best for success in their attempts to gain selection in the NSW PSSA team. 2 On Wednesday, Mr Heien and Mr Andrews took the Boys and Girls Football (Soccer) teams to Alroy oval to play in the PSSA knockout against Singleton PS. Both teams won their games 3-0 in dominant displays. Well done girls and boys! We move on to round two. Community Consultation I would like to continue to commit to establishing a group of parents/staff/community members to come together twice a term and discuss school planning and evaluation, in the form of a Community Consultation group. My goal is to try and have a representative from each class, a parent, or two, to attend these meetings and openly discuss what works well and what we need to do better. This term, I will be hosting these meetings on Wednesday, Week 5, 30 th May, from 4pm, in the school library, and Wednesday, Week 9, 27 th June at the same time and place. I envisage at least 24 parents/grandparents coming to these meetings! Planned maintenance Over the school holidays, a lot of planned maintenance occurred in the school, particularly in the canteen and back stage area of the hall, and the Year 5 and 6 classrooms. Painting also occurred in KA, KL, 1A and 1F, as well as carpet and/or vinyl replacement in these rooms and in K-6K. In the Year 5 and 6 complex, the inside and outside areas were painted and new carpet and/or vinyl was installed. Later this term, the COLA roof Perspex sheeting will also be replaced. I would like to thank the canteen volunteers, as well as the P&C executive, for clearing out the canteen, uniform shop and back stage area, to allow this work to take place promptly. This handy group of volunteers also put everything back once the work was completed. Many hands make light work. Thank you to the teachers for their patience in have this work occur during a period when they might normally be setting up their classrooms for a new term. Well done everyone. We also have a few new signs at the entrance to the school, which has spruced up this area nicely! Mother s Day stall The P&C will be holding their annual Mother s Day Stall next Thursday, from 9:30am. Notes have been distributed, and there will also be the raffle draw next week, with great prizes on offer. Children s University 20+ students in Year 5 are currently undertaking extra-curricular study through the Children s University passport initiative. Several of these students have been very active during the holidays, in seeking passport hours to strive towards graduation at the end of Term 3. Jztynn F made huge progress, gaining 5 hours of extra learning on his passport. Well done everyone who is gaining up to 30 hours, prior to the end of Term 3. We are hoping to have an on-campus visit to the University of Newcastle later this term, for all students involved. More information will be coming out soon about this. 2

3 Kiss and Ride rules New work has also taken place outside the school over the holiday break. A new widened footpath has been installed at the front of the school and a new median strip, with a pedestrian gap, is being installed on the intersection of Dorsman Drive and Blaxland Avenue. Part of this restructure is the change to parking at the front of the school. These zones operate under the same conditions as no parking zones, which means you may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. You're required to remain in, or within 3 metres of, your vehicle. Days and hours of operation may apply to some zones. Breakfast Club volunteers We are really looking out for more Breakfast Club volunteers this term. We are hoping to try and open up the Breakfast Club on a Monday, as well as our regular Tuesday and Thursdays, but we need volunteers for this to happen. The community members who work hard to ensure the success of this BC, are doing a great job in seeking donations and sponsorship for food and beverage supplies, but without volunteers to serve, from 8:30-9:30am, we won t be guaranteed to keep this great initiative running. Please contact the school to register your interest. NAPLAN Year 3 and Year 5 students will be undertaking the NAPLAN Assessment on Tuesday 15 th, Wednesday 16 th and Thursday 17 th of May this term. Notes have been sent home, with children in these grades, today. Please note that, if you wish to withdraw your child from this assessment, a note will need to be collected from the office, or if you contact your child s teacher, they will be able to send one home. Students will be assessed in the following areas: Writing, Language Conventions, Reading and Numeracy. Information from these assessments will guide the school in future teaching and learning directions. Our Year 2 students were entertained by the the McHappy Readers Program run by McDonalds Community Relations Representatives. Each class received a book donated by McDonalds Rutherford, Singleton, Greta and Maitland Foodcourt. A big thank you to our high school students, parents and grandparent, who not only helped to reset up the canteen but also helped us cater for the pupil free day whilst our teachers trained. I really do appreciate your help very much. These students are such a credit to their Mum. Breakfast club commenced on Tuesday with a great turn out. Our goal is to extend service on other days so please see the canteen if you can donate 2 hours of your time in the mornings. 7 CHARITY CONCERT I have commenced planning for a charity concert to be held during Term 3 in our school hall. I will be holding auditions in my classroom next week during lunch time. I encourage singers, dancers, instrumentalists, comedians, magicians or unusual talents. There is no limit to the size of the group or the age of the performers. Performances do not need to be finished or polished at this stage. Enthusiasm and confidence is what I look for. My classroom will be open during lunch times all term for practice sessions. Encourage your children to audition if they are interested in performing arts. Please see me if you have any further questions.
