1 WEEK 3, TERM 4 Thursday, 1 November 2018 Deputy Principal Greetings! This term the OLSH pillar that we are focussing on is touch the heart of others. We have many opportunities to touch the heart of others through our End of Year celebrations, Graduation events and the Outreach we engage in to support our local families through St. Vincent De Paul. This week, we had the privilege of showing 15 new families through our school at our Open Morning. Even at this late stage in the year, we are still having large numbers of prospective families join us to have a look around and hear about our school. The students we meet on these tours are the real drawcard for our school; their ability to articulate what they are learning and why they are learning it, along with their enthusiasm for our school, gives voice to how their heart has been touched and their mind opened to new learning and experience. On Tuesday, 20 of our senior students represented St. Martin s at the South Australian Catholic Primary Schools Sports Association European Handball Carnival. We appreciate the work that Michael Woods (along with his able assistant, Angela Norton) puts into organising these opportunities for our students to compete in various carnivals throughout the year. If your child has participated in any co-curricular sport this year, we hope that you are able to join us at our Sports Presentation Night on Wednesday, 14 November which will be held in the Community Centre at 6:30pm.

2 Senior students from St. Patrick s Catholic Primary School, Mansfield Park will join us for most of Friday this week for our annual Friendship Games. We welcome them and their staff to a day of fun, friendship and fierce volleyball competition! I have had the privilege of being present on two occasions over the past couple of weeks where my colleagues have presented the great work they are doing here at St. Martin s to the wider community. The first was a presentation by Mel Jones, Katia Pedersen and Grace Brianni to the schools involved in the Catholic Education SA Re-Imagining Childhood Research Project. The title of their presentation was Learning is deeper when children collaborate. Through this presentation, they shared the research they have done throughout this year regarding collaboration and its effect on student learning. The second was a presentation by Helen Young on Learning Improvement. Evaluating Improvement and Growth. And Using Comparative Data in the Early Years. All of these staff members have touched the heart of others through sharing their learning and understanding. Next week, we will touch the heart of others through our celebrations of Light the Way Day, St. Martin s Day and then Remembrance Day. We hope you are able to join us for all or part of these significant days in the St. Martin s School Year. Continue to touch the heart of others. With this weather which is so conducive to hayfever, we ask that you ensure that your child has their hayfever medication before coming to school and that they are armed with water and tissues to help manage the symptoms.

3 APRIM (Assistant Principal - Religious Identity and Mission) Light the Way Day Wednesday, 7 November In celebration of Diwali, the festival s connection to Light and with the growing Religious traditions of our school community, we are embracing all our cultures and religious traditions by having a Light the Way Day. Students and staff are invited to wear very colourful clothes on the day. We will have a special Liturgy at 9am on Wednesday morning, 7 November to celebrate this event. Classes will also participate in some activities in class by making lanterns or creating Rangoli mandala chalk drawings near classroom door walkways, as a sign of welcome. Feast Day of St Martin De Tours ( ) - 11 November Born in Pavia, Italy, to pagan parents, Martin became a catechumen in his early teens. At age 15 he joined the Roman army, where once on horseback he encountered a beggar. Having nothing to give but the clothes on his back, he cut his heavy officer's cloak in half, and gave half to the beggar. Later he had a vision of Christ wearing the cloak. A hermit and monk for ten years, he was declared Bishop of Tours by popular acclamation in 371 and was the first non-martyr to be given the status of a saint. As this year s feast day falls on a Sunday, we will be having our school feast day celebrations on Friday, 9 November. One hundred years ago on 11 November 1918, four bloody years of brutal conflict came to an end.

4 In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the post-war decades. Each year on this day Australians observe one minute s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. At St Martin s we will be having our one minute of silence on Monday, 12 November at 11am. Ecological Sustainability Caring for God s Works of Creation Don t forget Wrapper Free Wednesday! 5 Volunteers Thank You Mass will be held on Friday, 23 November at 9:00am in the St. Martin s Community Centre followed by Morning Tea in the Foyer. Greenacres Walkerville Parish News 2018/2019 Sacramental Preparation Program The Sacrament of Reconciliation will begin with Session 1 on Tuesday, 23 October at St Monica s School Hall at 7.00pm. 6 Sports News SAPSASA Cricket Congratulations Josh (Year 6) who has been selected in the SAPSASA District Cricket Team. Josh will participate in a state-wide carnival in November. SAPSASA Tennis Congratulations Zoe and Johnny (Year 6) who have been selected in the SAPSASA District Tennis Team. Zoe and Johnny will participate in a state-wide carnival in November. Catholic Schools European Handball Carnival On Tuesday, Year 6-7 students participated at the annual Catholic Schools European Handball Carnival at Cabra College. All of St Martin s three teams performed very well and demonstrated some creative and attacking play. The students enjoyed 14 wins from their 17 games against other schools and should be congratulated for their fine behaviour and great effort. North East Primary School Cricket Insufficient interest has meant that St. Martin s has been unable to field cricket teams this term. Basketball St Martin s basketball is looking for boys and girls to join U8 Saturday morning teams. Games are held at Modbury High School. For more information please check the sports notice boards or contact Jodie Nitschke on PE and SPORT REMINDERS Athletics Singlets, Football Jumpers and Netball Dresses To avoid being billed for missing garments, please return all athletics singlets, football jumpers and netball dresses in a clean state as soon as possible. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART This year s programme has been finalised. Jump Rope for Heart prizes will be distributed upon their arrival at school. It is estimated that this will happen in Week 6 or 7. SPORTS PRESENTAION NIGHT This year s Sports Presentation Night will be held in the Sports Hall on Wednesday, 14 November. The evening will run from 6:30pm 8.00pm

8 Dr Suess Musical at St Martin s Dr Suess St Martin s Date: Venue: Friday, 30 November 6:30pm The Courtyard Dear Parents/Caregivers, Your family and friends are invited to attend your child s performance of the Dr Seuss Musical adapted by Meg Van Ruth and directed by Jasmine Lim. In preparation for this special performance, please kindly note the following: 1. Performance Uniform: Red or Blue t-shirt Navy school Sport Shorts (track pants if weather is cool) Toe covered shoes/sandals (Bring a jumper if the weather is cool but students are not to wear them on stage) Main characters will have their costumes provided. Some classes may have additional accessories/props (class teacher will advise). 2. A full dress rehearsal will be held on the day of the performance. 3. This is a family friendly event, so please feel free to bring along a picnic and blankets to the performance. 4.
