I would therefore like to congratulate the following parents and DET employees on their election to College Council. Parents DET Employees Melinda Riddell Fran Ibbott Brian Dennis Kevin Osborne Miles Menegon Student members of College Council will be elected in Term 2. Student Successes Congratulations are extended to Vienna Soubra who has again been selected to play soccer in the Women s National Premier League and this year will attend the world youth event, the Gothica Cup. Professional Practice Days The most important thing we can do to improve student outcomes is to provide time for teachers to further develop their skills and to plan the curriculum together. As part of the 2017 Victorian Government Schools Agreement teachers receive one day per term to focus on the delivery of the curriculum. This means each teacher receives four professional practice days per year. On these days, an alternative teacher will provide the learning program set by their regular teacher. These days commenced two weeks ago for teachers at Monbulk College and if you would like more information please look at the Department s website or contact me directly. Swimming Sports The college swimming sports will be held on Friday March 2 nd at Croydon Pool. Parents are welcome as spectators or if you would like to assist please contact Brock Mason at the college. Students will be transported to and from the pool by bus from the college. For parents wishing to attend we will be at the pool from 9.45am to 2.15pm. Students are not required to wear school uniform and should come dressed in their house colours. New Buildings As you would have observed the works for the new buildings have commenced and over the next few weeks the excavation works will commence and so there will be a number of trucks using the staff car park entry. Please be aware that during this time it may be difficult to access the general office during the day and parents are requested to use the Gym car park unless collecting a student from the sick bay. 3 PAYING MONBULK COLLEGE VIA INTERNET BANKING There are a number of payments parents and guardians need to make that are not available through Compass, such as School Fees, Camp fees by instalments, Instrumental Music and Uniform, to name a few. We always welcome payments via Internet Banking, but occasionally we receive a payment without any reference, which makes it virtually impossible to track. This may also occur when you deposit through a teller at your bank. Ask them to add your reference for you. When making a payment, please use your Student s Code and some form of mention of the intended allocation, ie Music, Fees etc. If you wish to make payments for multiple things (too many to reference), you can lump it all together in one payment; just give us a call in the General Office on to let us know what it s for and we will take a note so your payment can be allocated correctly. You can also me at halkier.jenny.d@edumail.vic.gov.au with that information. Many of our parents/guardians have found in the past that making regular payments of even $20 week can alleviate the pressure of paying bulk amounts for fees, camps or overseas trips like Germany or Japan. Setting up a regular deposit through your bank means there may be credit available when that unexpected expense pops up. Don t worry if there is still credit available when your student leaves; we can easily refund the unused amount to you. If you have any concerns about outstanding charges or you wish to commence a regular payment plan, please do not hesitate to give us a call and discuss the options. Jenny Halkier Audrey Simmons Katie Craig CSEF (CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSIONS FUND) APPLICATIONS FOR 2018 Parents/guardians who were eligible for CSEF in 2017 and are still eligible will be automatically processed through Centrelink. If you now hold a Pension/Health Care Card which was valid on 29 th January, you are urged to apply in If your student has recently enrolled from another school and you are eligible, you will also need to (re)apply. The CSEF pays $225 per student to the College for use by that student for any camp, sporting activity or excursion they attend and carries forward any unused portion year to year. Forms can be obtained from the General Office or give us a ring and we can one to you. Applications close on 29 th June. 3

4 SCIENCE NEWS YEAR 12 Chemistry The year 12 s are off to a great start. They have completed their first SAC where they are working out the heat of combustion of different alcohols. Luckily for the class we had a double up on the methanol data as Aussie s and Kyle s experiment may have taken a little longer than expected! YEAR 8- Grand Prix The year 8 s are super excited about going to the Grand Prix on Friday 23 rd March. It should be an exciting day for us all.. This excursion is now fully booked. YEAR 8 & 9- STEM This year we will have year 8 s and year 9 s attending the Yarra Ranges Tech School in Lilydale. They will be visiting up to four times throughout the year. It is a great opportunity for our students to use technology that can be quite expensive for schools to purchase. It is a free excursion, however consent must still be given via Compass. 9 School for Student leadership Vegetable Garden News from the garden to the plate Our 2016 SSL group established a vegetable garden as their Community Learning Project. The planting was completed towards the end of last year and now the Food Tech area under the guidance of Trish Rambaldo have been able to harvest and use some of the produce. This has been wonderful to see. As the photos show, the tomatoes were used to make tomato sauce as well as being eaten fresh. According to the students they were very juicy and sweet! The corn was used in a Mexican cooking lesson! Thanks to SSL 2016 team for enabling this and to the staff and students who are maintaining it, using it as a source of learning and produce. 10 Exciting opportunity for Year 9 Students School for Student Leadership Monbulk College has once again been invited to participate in a very exciting program which offers a team of Year 9 students the opportunity to attend the School for Student Leadership. In 2018, we have been invited to send a team of 3 boys and 3 girls to the Snowy River Campus for all of Term 4. School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training initiative offering a unique residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions. There are three campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Snowy River Campus is located near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland. This program was successfully launched at Monbulk College in 2015, with 6 students attending the Gnurad Gundidj Campus. In 2016 we sent a team of 6 students to the Alpine Campus at Dinner Plain during Term 4. Last year, a team of 6 once again attended the Gnurad-Gundidj Campus. We welcome them back to Monbulk College this term as they begin follow up work on a Community Learning Project planned during their time at the School for Student Leadership. Students who spend a term at one of these campuses experience a different kind of learning and are given the opportunity to develop their personal and leadership skills. There is also a strong emphasis on outdoor education and team work. An information session will be held for Year 9 families on March 14 th at 6.30pm in the Year 7 area, when more information will be provided on the School for Student Leadership program and the selection process.
